Sam was feeling stronger after about a week of recovery at Pride Rock.
As far as he knew they hadn’t found the others yet, if there were any others to even find. So for the moment, he was content with staying there. After all, he was safe and didn’t have to live afraid. But he also was only fourteen, barely so for that matter - so he’d decided a few days after some of his strength was back he’d do what the Cubs did during the day.
Exploring. Well safely near Pride Rock anyway.
As far as he knew there were plenty of places to do so as Simba pretty much ruled the whole damn place. And he was pretty sure by now word had gotten around that he was protected by his pride as no one seemed to bother him when he made his way down to the communal watering hole that morning.
He’d cleaned himself in a cleaner stream nearby - though he wasn’t sure why he’d bothered given it was animals... But it did make him feel better to do so none the less. Though he was none the less nervous, after all, all the animals there seemed to know each other! Chatting away... Would he scare them? He didn’t really know.
So he took a seat along the side and observed it all curiously instead. He’d always been the shy type anyway - why stop now? “You’re being ridiculous,” he chastised himself quietly. “At least try to make friends.”

Lurking nearby in the grass was a silent, spotted huntress. Fuli the cheetah, on the hunt for a good meal. Slinking through the grass, a smirk on her face and pep in her step, she was totally in her element. Until she heard a voice nearby. Curious, she slipped away from the gazelle she'd been tracking and headed towards the source of the voice. As she peeked through the grass, she found a... thing. A baboon-looking, mostly hairless bipedal thing. A bit taller than her when sitting, which it was. Covered in multicolored leaf... things. This was definitely new. Fuli spent her whole life in the Pridelands, and would definitely remembered seeing one of these... things before.
But to her surprise, the thing mentioned something about a friend. In a male adolescent's voice. So not just a thing. A he. A newcomer he. Fuli was skeptical of the thing... his intentions, but he didn't really look like an apex predator. And if it came to a fight she could simply flee and he'd be unable to stop her. A smile formed on her face as she quickly fabricated a plan.
Fuli waited until the thing was looking away. Without a sound, aside from a slight rustling of the grass, she dashed right up next to him and sat down. She grinned, and opened her mouth to speak.
"Hey."

Fuli probably startled Sam more than she intended to.
But then again he was still getting used to being around creatures way bigger, stronger, and faster than him and... Oh wait, was that a cub? Wow that made him feel like an even bigger idiot for jumping and shrieking the way he did. Wait was that a Cheetah?
Whoa!
Honestly even in zoos and his mother’s side work he’d never seen one so... Close. Granted he definitely would not have wanted to see a grown cheetah out here or he’d be nothing more than a snack, but this was still pretty cool. “Whoa! A cheetah!” Damn could he be any more cliche. “No wonder you snuck up on me, mom says you guys can run faster than a train sometimes.”
Wow way to introduce yourself, doofus. Shaking off his thoughts Sam spoke up. “Oh sorry, I’m Sam by the way, didn’t mean to go all nerd on you.”

Fuli was getting quite good at sneaking around. She was still a bit confused, but took in the praise anyways. Well, it sounded like praise at least. She had no idea what a train was. This Sam guy seemed pretty friendly. It was a nice change of pace to meet someone that liked cheetahs, instead of brushing them off and gushing about lions all day long. Seriously, those guys stole the show all the time. But regardless, there were still a lot of questions that needed to be answered.
Fuli rolled her eyes. "Yep, I'm a cheetah, how observant of you. Name's Fuli. Now, if you don't mind, you've got some explaining to do!" she said, poking a claw at him. "What kind of baboon are you, why are you covered in leaves and why are you in the Pridelands? Where do you live, anyways? And-" She sniffed at the air. "Why does your fur smell so weird?"

Baboon? Another thing that thought he was a monkey!
Ok so technically he kinda was since humans were a type of ape, he guessed. But still! Did they see a tail growing between his legs? He didn’t think so! Still Sam couldn’t get too offended considering no one here seemed to have ever seen a human in their entire lives.
“Not a monkey, actually. I’m a human. I don’t know - supposedly we’re a kind of ape but not really,” he then added. As she asked about the leaves. “Wait, my clothes? Well I mean... I get you guys just go around y’know naked. But I’m not exactly comfortable with that.”
The last question though mostly really confused him. His hair smelled funny? He guessed it might have been the city smells but they should have left a long time ago. But still... “I mean I’m not really from her but I haven’t been home in like a week,” he admitted. “Do I really smell that different?”

The cheetah squinted. Naked wasn't a term she'd heard before, and clothes wasn't either. But if that's what sam wanted to call the stuff all over his body, so be it. Why they were so important was beyond her. And this "human" wasn't any kind of animal she'd heard of before, either. "Well, yeah you smell different. Everyone does, but you? I don't even recognize half the scents on your body."
She stood up and walked around in front of Sam. "So what brings you to the Pridelands, Sam? You're obviously not from around here. You just passing through or what?"

Interesting. So she could indeed still smell the city on him.
Honestly he understood what she meant though. Around here, there were a lot of different smells he was in no way used to in the city. Not to mention it was a lot different smelling the fresh air as well in such an open place. “I mean, my place is uh... Way different,” he paused after a moment. “I’m not exactly from a jungle.”
Oh! What was he doing here? Yeah that was the good question. “I guess I’m sort of stranded here, there was a crash and my mom died,” he admitted honestly. For now he wasn’t thinking too much of Zion after all. “King Simba put me in the protection of his pride, y’know. Since I have no clue what to do out here and I guess I’m a “cub”.”

Fuli frowned. His mother had died? Well, that was certainly a bit of a shocker. She wouldn't know how it felt though, due to her lack of any parental figures. She wondered what this crash was. Was it a crash like, the noise? She would have asked, but best not to accidentally trigger some unpleasant memories.
A cub out on his own, new to the lands and unfamiliar with the place? Fuli had been in that situation herself once upon a time, but that didn't make it any better.
Lions raised their cubs with full bellies and few responsibilities, and the essential survival skills came much later. That would never do for an orphaned cub out on his own. But Fuli, despite being only a few years old, could probably do a lot better. And while it wasn't going to be easy, she couldn't just let Sam go out into the world with no way to fend for himself.
"Maybe you don't, but I do. Say, mind if I teach you some tricks? Life out here's not what those stuffy lion royals say it is. You're gonna need to learn how to fend for yourself at some point."

Sam listened intently to the cheetah.
Honestly he wasn’t surprised that it wasn’t all roses and happiness. He’d already just met that Zira character and she alone was enough to make his skin crawl. What other dangers were even in this place? Shouldn’t a place like this run by animals be more peaceful after all?
“What other kinds of danger are there? I already met the “Outlanders”,” he managed after a moment of thought. “But sure! I wouldn’t mind a few pointers at all.”

Fuli smiled. "Good. You're probably gonna need it. Not everyone here has a pride or herd to watch their backs. And if you plan on staying long, you'll need to do things yourself."
She lowered her stance and went over to the tall grass. "So let's start with the basics," she said, head poking out of the greenery. "Tracking and stalking are the two first steps of a hunt, how good are you at those?"

A pride or herd would be nice.
But of course, Sam wasn’t exactly counting on that. After all, he didn’t know what the animals really anticipated to do with him in the long run. Especially if everyone else was dead - that was a scary thought. “Right. I mean, I don’t know I may not have a choice but to stay long term,” Sam admitted with a shrug. “It’s not like anyone here knows where the other humans live. And I don’t even know if anyone’s alive from the rest of my er... Group?”
Tracking and stalking? Sam looked at her with a tilt of his head, confusion in his eyes. How did you even track an animal? He guessed hunters probably did it all the time but he of course was not one of those. “I mean I guess I’ve never tried it before,” he admitted honestly. “Where I came from food was a lot easier to get y’ know?”

Fuli frowned. "Never tried it before?" She looked the boy up and down. Come to think of it, he didn't seem like much of an apex predator. It was beyond her what kind of special skill this "human" species had to offer. Maybe he was really fast? He seemed kinda light for an animal his size. "Okay, let's do that part later. How about running?" The cheetah sprinted a few dozen feet in one direction, and in a blink she was back. "How are you at that?"

Well he guessed that would be hard to believe.
After all, there was definitely a predator and prey mentality with most carnivore or omnivore animals wasn’t there? Kill or be killed. Eat or be eaten. And while humans may have once been that way they definitely weren’t anymore. “I mean to be fair a lot of humans are like that still I’m sure. Especially in this neck of the woods,” he admitted. “So I definitely can learn to....”
Damn she was fast. After a moment, he smirked, this was actually one thing he was good at - though as fast as a cheetah? Most definitely not. All the same, he got himself ready and sprinted. He wasn’t the quickest human around but he was definitely lithe and fast on his feet. Skidding to a stop and catching his breath.
“I mean.. I’m no cheetah but I used to work out a little I guess...” he managed

Fuli nodded. The kid wasn't a cheetah, obviously, but he could probably outrun an adult lion if he was lucky. He tired quick, but hey, everyone had to start somewhere. It seemed a little odd, though, that this creature that seemed to specialize in being fast wasn't super fast. Sure, everyone was pretty slow to a cheetah, but this just above average running. Not an extraordinary trait by any means. She put on an encouraging smile. "That's not bad, actually. I'm sure you could catch up with a wildebeest if you really tried. So, what other skills do you humans have?" She doubted he'd be good at stealth, considering his brightly colored "clothes." But he had to have some other talent.

A wildebeast?
Admittedly Sam didn’t know every animal there was. But he was sure he’d learn in good time, if he kept up anyway. Honestly he had a feeling this wouldn’t be the easiest part of his time here. “Hopefully I’ll at least basically know what I’m doing,” he admitted. “I don’t want to become someone’s meal instead and all.”
What other skills? Hmmm he had to think a moment. “Well we do know how to hunt pretty well. So I guess I’ll have to learn. But we mostly use tools - like that stick that mandrake, Rafiki uses,” he explained honestly. “Sometimes people use guns or spears and stuff.”
