Sam was about ready to question again when he saw it.
Whoa. Now that was cool. What kind of place was this? He had no idea but the more he looked the more he was pretty much mesmerized. “Yeah like I said, this place gets cooler the longer I’m here,” he explained as he had a seat beside her. “Man I almost hope the main human world doesn’t find this place ever. After what they did in our war.”

Fuli looked back at Sam, snapped out of her entranced gaze. Main human society? Sam was just full of surprises.
"War?" she asked, slightly concerned. "What did the other humans do? Are there more?"

Sam was silent for a moment.
He rubbed his arm and wondered if there would be any ramifications if he told animals about World War II. He took a deep breath and looked thoughtful. “The ones in the group I came with were good people. Least I think,” Sam shrugged in all honesty. “But back in this place called Germany, this guy named Hitler tried exterminating a whole race of us... A lot of humans stood up to him and it was pretty intense..”
He shuddered. “He’s dead now and we won. But it’s like the Pridelands after that Scar dude,” he admitted. “We’re all just trying to pick up the pieces. Or were when I left.”

Fuli shook her head. "Sounds like a mean guy. I mean, it's not like they did anything to deserve that, right?" She looked back at the landscape. "I wouldn't know anything about that. Politics and ruling and stuff like that, that's all just overcomplicated nonsense. I like to live a simpler life, no kings or wars or borders. Just me, and a whole world waiting to be explored." The cheetah looked out into the distance for a moment, staring happily at the watering hole and its surroundings.

Sam shook his head. Of course he was still pretty young so he wasn’t totally sure of all the details. But the people had definitely done nothing to deserve what happened. “No but sometimes you get the right person and people just follow them,” Sam replied honestly. “That’s why I don’t like politics in my land either you never really know where to put your trust.”
He then added curiously. “So you really just go up and down every inch of this place? No one stops you?”

The world was like that sometimes. All the more reason to not bother with any of it, she reasoned.
Fuli chuckled. "Of course. Not like anyone can stop me. And nobody really does. There's nothing holding me back, ever. And there's so much out there, just waiting for me!"
The cheetah jumped to her feet. "Want me to show you how to track animals by print? I'm not too bad at it myself," she offered.

Sam nodded a little.
He guessed that did make sense. Animal orphans probably had a lot more free reign because they lived in a free range world right? It would make a lot of sense at the end of the day. “I mean that probably wouldn’t be too bad,” Sam replied. “But one of these days I might have a question for you when it isn’t... Y’know getting late.”
After all, if Sam was going to find Zion, if it was really out there. Maybe Fuli had seen something.
Ohhh tracking animals by print? He’d have to leave soon, as he could tell it would get dark soon but that still wasn’t a bad idea. “Sure! I got time before I need to get back,” he admitted. “Night predators and all, y’know?”

Fuli jumped down from the hill, and sniffed around a bit before picking up a scent trail. Surely enough, there were a couple gazelle tracks lying on the trail. "Check these out. Know what animal made them?" she asked, looking back at Sam.

Sam follows after a moment.
Of course it was a good question. How did he tell? It was a good question. Moving his hand down he tried to remember what his mom said on the subject. Hooves were definitely the cause of that - right? But there were a lot of animals that could be.
“I mean... It depends there are a lot of creatures with hooves,” he explained. “... Maybe a zebra?”

"Getting there," she said with a smile. "See that little imprint at the back? And the dimensions of each hoof? How they're spaced like that here and here and there?" she asked, pointing to various parts on the set of tracks. "That's how you know a gazelle made them."

Sam watched carefully.
Honestly he hasn’t even seen a gazelle before so it was a little surprising to him. Not so much that they were out here but that they had such distinct hoof marks. Did all animals have those? He guessed it made sense when handprints and paw prints both were pretty distinct after all.
“That’s crazy! I always thought hooves were just, y’know hooves,” he admitted out loud at this point. “Do all of them look different or like this?”

Fuli chuckled. "If only. It's usually more subtle differences than that that help you identify tracks. Here, let me show you something else." The cheetah quickly ran several feet to Sam's left, and then turned around and calmly walked back. "See those two sets of tracks I made? You can tell that I was walking in one and walking in the other, right?"

Sam nodded along again.
Sure it was pretty simple but it was something he still was able to grasp pretty well and that was always a bonus. Especially out here without any idea of what he was doing. If he was going to have to survive out here he needed to listen carefully to anyone who gave him advice he figured.
“Man there’s a lot to watch out for,” he managed after rubbing the back of his head. “Especially when I’m probably the prey to someone else’s predator too.”

Fuli chuckled. "Oh, you think you have it bad? Ever wondered why the lions kicked out all the leopards and jackals and hyenas and wild dogs? It's because they were competition. The only reason we cheetahs get to stay is because we usually keep out of sight, and because of our small population. Still, I've had many a meal stolen by them. You're lucky they let you stay. But trust me, once they figure out that there's an entire world of humans out there, they're gonna give you the same treatment. My advice? Learn to fend for yourself, just in case. I'm up to teach you some hunting tricks, if you'd like!"
Fuli got up and turned away. "Well, I'd best be going now. My food isn't gonna catch itself. Nice meeting you!" she said, looking over her shoulder.
