Fuli raised an eyebrow at this. Rafiki the mandrake? Okay, maybe Sam's brain wasn't fully sane. Guns? Spears? Tools? All new terms. Maybe they were like claws for humans, although she wasn't sure if they came out like lions or just grew in with older age. "What are you talking about? Can you show me how this spear... gun thing works?" She held up a paw and showed her claws. "Can you unsheathe them or what?"

Oh right.
He was talking to an animal and she was definitely completely confused. Though he didn’t blame her. People threw around a lot of different and unusual terms when he thought about it too so he was probably looking at them with the same dumbfounded expression half the time.
“Oh I’ll show you. Just don’t freak out, ok?”
Reaching into his back pocket, he pulled out a pocket knife and set out to taking a long, broken branch. He knew how to sharpen it into a spear well enough, his mom showed him before they’d left for their expedition. But it still took him a good ten minutes before he’d sharpened it enough.
He displayed it to Fuli with pride. “See? This is a spear. I mean, a kinda primal one but still a spear.”

Fuli was really confused at this point. A giant stick? It did look sharp enough to kill, but in a fight it would be unwieldy and long. And running with that thing in her teeth would be a nightmare. Running down prey would be next to impossible while carrying it. "How do you hunt with that?" she asked, stepping closer. "What's the point of running around with that stick? Isn't that what claws and teeth are for?" She had a confused expression on her face, but was quite intrigued by Sam's strange new behaviors, talents and appearance. "And what was that other thing?" she asked, glancing at his pocket. "And if it's so sharp, why would you put it inside you?"

Claws and teeth?
Sam had to chuckle a little at that. Since he didn’t exactly have the kind of teeth that were good for hunting, or the class at all. So he couldn’t base his hunts on that. “I wish I had the right claws and teeth for that,” he explained honestly. “But my teeth are mostly used to chew my food. This is like sharp enough to at least wound most animals long enough. The harder part is cooking it. Since humans like me get sick from raw meat.”
Oh? His knife? Sam pulled out the knife, which he’d gotten from cub scouts back when he’d been in it. And it was pretty trusty. “My knife? It’s like a claw I guess. You can use it for everything... Carving up meat, tools, even hunting if I had to kill something fast,” he said. “It has this cool thing where I can push it in and it won’t stab me either.”

Fuli looked Sam up and down. He wasn't a physical marvel. He wasn't very strong, or agile, or even super intelligent. But he had a lot of tricks and "tools," that was for sure.
Fuli frowned. "So you humans don't have claws, you hold them? That's weird. Why would a species be born without any claws and be forced to look for them instead? And speaking of that, where do you get the knives and stuff, anyways? I don't think those grow on trees." She sat down next to the boy and looked at him with curiosity.

That... Was a good question.
Sam sat cross legged and tried to find the way to best describe human society and how it worked. Well he guessed the best way to start was at the beginning. “Well we weren’t always like this. Back like millions of years ago we had claws and fangs I think,” he admitted. Though he didn’t really know for sure. “Then we built these things called villages and kingdoms. Except ours had these huge dens and not like... Your kingdom. And I guess we adapted.”
Sam frowned and shook his head. “Nah it doesn’t grow on a tree. You have to buy or be given it,” he admitted. “Some are even bigger and really expensive.”

Fuli was still very confused. The idea of a society was very foreign to her already, and this was just plain weird. Why would a species reverse evolve? And what was this new term, buy? Sam was just dropping terms on her and it was confusing.
"First of all, why would you evolve in reverse? If you still had claws, you wouldn't need spears. And second, what does buy mean? Do you summon it out of the sky or something? And what's expensive mean, too?" She was confused, but also interested. This cub was either crazy, which she didn't think he was but it was still possible, or he knew a lot more than she did.

Sam laughed a little.
Ok so she really needed to have this broken down. He tapped his lip as he thought of the best way to put it. “So buying is like a trade. You take these uh...” he picked up a fallen leaf to show for emphasis. “Called money. And you exchange it for stuff. And everything has like value to people. So you might need more leaves or less leaves.”
It was all probably a little confusing still but the best way was to at least try and handle it. “I mean I don’t know things are way different where I come from than the jungle I guess,” he explained. “It’s gonna be hard to adapt.”

Fuli grunted, her disdain for this idea clear.
"Well, that's a stupid system. Why can't everyone just hunt for themselves? You just made a spear, didn't you?" she asked, putting a paw on Sam's makeshift spear. "If you can do that for yourself, then why would you need to buy them with money?"
Her tail flicked, and her eyes grew narrow. "And another thing, what if you had a ton of money, couldn't you just buy everything? You'd never hunt your own food or make your own spears or whatever. Money sounds like a dumb idea. Just a lame excuse for humans to make other humans do work for them."

Sam... Also agreed with this aspect of Fuli’s assumptions.
He guessed that was basically why adults were always worried about money. And why kids like him had to go to school and be taken care of most of the time. And why that made this whole thing kinda hard on him, or so he assumed. “Well you kind of hit the nail on the head with that one,” Sam replied honestly. “It’s also why we mature slower than animals. Like you guys grow up quickly while we’re at home until we’re like eighteen.”
Come to think of it; that was also a big pain in the ass but right now he didn’t have to worry about it. And honestly it made a pit form in his stomach to think about it. “I guess that’s why I’m kinda scared. I’ve never really had to do anything for myself,” he admitted. “Like mom didn’t make me get a job or anything. Let alone prepare me to be in a jungle.”

Fuli scoffed. "Eighteen? You'll be dead before you get a chance to see the world!"
Fuli looked out into the savanna for a second. This kid had it easy, and in a way he'd also had it hard. If he didn't learn to fend for himself, with no other humans theye to help him, he'd have a rough go at it to say the least. "First of all, I've got your back. I know how it feels to be left alone with no one to turn to, and I don't want you going through all that." She smirked just slightly. "And second, it's not a jungle. Look around you," she said, looking out at the rolling grasslands around them. "It's a big open plain, where your only limit's the sky and the grass goes out across the horizon. It's no jungle, but it is home."

Sam snorted.
Well he’d definitely be dead in their terms at least. Fuli definitely wasn’t wrong about that. But of course, Sam was lucky enough that humans lived much longer than animals in that respect. “I mean we age a lot slower than you guys. Like, I once heard a guy lived to be ninety-nine.” He pointed out. “Humans are weird.”
Sam... Hadn’t thought of it that way when Fuli mentioned her facts, or that he had a whole savannah to explore. Sure, he worried about the other humans and the chance they were out there and in danger. But at the same time, he had to keep looking on the bright side. And survive.
“You’re probably right. I’m looking at this the wrong way,” he admitted finally. “I mean I survived this far. And I really doubt any kids back home can say they’ve had an adventure like this one “

Fuli stood up. "Well, there's a first time for everything!" she shouted, jumping down the hill. "Come on, there's something I wanna show you!" She jogged off, making sure Sam would be able to keep up. "There's a lot you need to know if you're making this place your home."

Huh, what could she want to show him.
Keeping hold of his spear he decided to jog after her and find out. After all, despite this whole thing kind of being like a dream at this point he might as well go with the flow right? “Ok cool, but where are we going?” He asked as he continued to jog after her. “I feel like every time I turn around there’s something new.”

Fuli smirked. "Oh, you haven't seen anything yet!" she shouted. After a little bit of jogging, she reached an elevated ridgeline. The cheetah approached the edge of it, and looked down. Below this ridge was a large watering hole, surrounded by grass, trees and animals. Hippos swam, egrets flew, gazelle grazed, and the green grass reached out as far as the eye could see. "Cool, huh?" asked Fuli with a grin. She gazed off into the savannah, momentarily lost in its beauty.
