He guessed he could see why. While Zira would be funny to make mad he was also sure that she could be dangerous mad. Especially if she thought Kovu was the rightful heir to the throne and now he was even a centimeter ahead. “I mean I’m not afraid of her. Not really anyway,” he admitted honestly. “But I can see why it’s a problem. Especially if she thinks I’m weaker.”
Kabili smiled as he mentioned his mom being proud of his position. “She would be. It’s like I told everyone, she loved lions. Worked with them her whole life - even if she wasn’t paid,” he explained honestly. Figuring Zazu may be interested to learn that factoid too. “She was even in charge of a whole Pride of lions in an animal sanctuary once - before I was born. Nothing serious. But she did get up close and personal, helped make sure no one bothered them.”
He was silent for a long moment - meeting Zazu’s gaze. “I mean a lot of it was before I was born. But she was the type of woman putting her life on the line for them. For a lot of wildlife, a good chunk of the time,” he explained honestly. “She had to give up a lot of that when I was born and bills had to be paid. But even then she was working with ‘em. At the zoos, at the preserve sometimes...”
He then added. “I guess that’s why I wasn’t totally afraid when I met dad. I’d been around lions before. And there was always this wiseness to them. Mom trusted them. So I did too,” he admitted with great honesty. “She’d have learned so much from them - so many theories and thoughts she had.”
When he’d finished his thoughts; he did have one more. Though it was with a more solemn look in his eyes. “It makes me wonder why she’s not the one here. Why *I* was the one spared,” he explained. “But I know she’s just happy that I ended up somewhere happy... Let alone as a prince among lions.”
That was also true! Who knew what they’d find at Zion. “Honestly, I’d love to see what we find at Zion. I mean if we do,” he announced. “I mean it’s been lost for centuries. And it could have all kinds of things.”

Zazu sighed, "I get your meaning. he said simply, there was a balancing act between being safe of Zira, and not letting fear control them. "Do not antagonize her, we are above that, and if we forget that we are no better. he noted.
Zazu sat back some, as Kabili spoke. He enjoyed listening and seemed particularly keen on Kabili and his mother, for all his fears of other humans. He nodded his beak along, actively listening in the most visible way. Even this stubborn old bird might be swayed from his less-desirable opinions. He didn't understand the concept of pay, as such, but from context figured out the meaning, that she did so without reward.
He seemed... displeased at the question of 'Why him?'. Not displeased at Kabili, as such. Displeased at what he was thinking of as the answer. "You don't think it's chance, do you?" he looked up to the clouds. "I don't think so. I'm sure they..." he looked down to face Kabili again. "Want you to show us the way. You are so sure you were spared. I think you are right, that they intervened, and she... naturally wanted it to be you..."

That was also fair. He could see things from Zira’s side even if they were evil. She’d clearly held love for Scar, and that did mean she had felt pain. Enough for him not to see her as evil? No way. But enough to have some compassion. “I mean I agree, especially after what I’m learning,” he replied honestly. “There’s a saying in my culture: the better man doesn’t need to stoop to their level.”
Kabili was... Surprised to say the least when Zazu suggested the kings really had intervened. He didn’t know, had they? Though it was a nice thought - he agreed his mom would have chosen his life over hers any day. After all the last thing he remembered was her securing his seatbelt on the flight before they were sucked out. The very action that ultimately cushioned his fall and saved his life.
“You... Make a good point. Mom always said everything happens for a reason,” he explained. “‘Even if it’s not always clear at the beginning. It always becomes apparent when you look a little deeper.’” He quoted her in as womanly a voice as he could muster. “
After several moments had passed he decided to say his own peace on it. “I mean if Zion is here that means humans were too,” he pointed out. Something he hadn’t voiced too. “I don’t know why they left. Or if they were exiled. But I like to think if we can get along like we do - there’s hope that we can solve it.”
He wasn’t sure how he’d help in that. Or if that was the idea, how he played into it. But he then added. “But I keep telling myself I’ll keep listening,” he explained. “Maybe I’ll hear that voice again sometime. Rafiki says if you listen close enough the kings are always talking after all.”
Then he added. “Sorry I’m not sounding weird, am I? I talk a lot, I know.” He laughed.

Zazu nodded along as Kabili understood, "Precisely. It is how Mufasa would say it, sadly it... cost him his life, but he would not have wanted any of our actions to change. Not at all." he said, "Mufasa lives on in Simba, and your mother lives on in you." he connected.
"By the sound of it, they did not leave willingly. A great tragedy, or a great conflict, anything could have happened. What is important is that we find out. It is too great a part of, potentially, our history to be buried."
Zazu hrmed softly, "As for the great kings... the voice." he sighed, "Let me ask you. What could they tell you?" he asked, rhetorically in a way. "If Zion is as old as we believe... it is far older than those kings that knew us in life. They would know nothing well, useful... Perhaps it's simply they have nothing to say. Meanwhile, you have a lot to say. Maybe they aren't talking, because... they are listening?"

She lived on in him? For a moment Kabili disagreed, but when he thought about it she kind of did. He was here, living among lions and learning all he could about animals, and nature. “I guess you’re right kinda,” Kabili finally responded. “I actually have her old notes... I’ve been writing and adding to them slowly. But don’t worry, dad knows and he says it’s ok. As long as I only share it with the right people you know?”
His next observation made him tense. The thought that the kings might have buried what happened? That made him nervous. Just what could they find if they did? “I kind of hope I’m wrong,” he admitted. “Because the kings don’t see m like the burying it type. So it must have been really, really bad if they did.”
Listening.... Huh. He hadn’t thought of that, when he talked to them on Pride Rock once in a while. He figured it was his way of talking to himself and getting things off his chest. “Huh... I never thought about that,” again he thought out loud. “I mean I sometimes go out onto Pride Rock and talk to them. But I assumed no one was actually listening in. It just feels good to get things off my chest.”

"I assure you, you are both her and also you." he said, trying to be poetic. "Do take notes, our story should be shared." he smiled, turning to a quizzical look. "You misunderstand me." he shook his head, "I don't mean that someone buried it, but rather that over time it was buried. Only our most distant ancestors would know of it, the ones to whom we have the weakest er... connection."
Zazu shrugged, "They are always watching, listening. Just like a parent, they would want to know the good, the bad. To be with you as you face troubles, to see you grow. All who help you, in this way, want to be proud of you. Of your growth, of your strengths, of facing your weaknesses.

That did also make sense. Though he agreed that the story should be shared, even if he didn’t think he should share it with the whole world. They probably weren’t ready. “I will definitely keep taking notes,” he smiled. “But I guess that does make sense. I mean, I hope they wouldn’t bury it like they wanted it to be forgotten or something... I wouldn’t want to think we’d done something awful.”
He did listen rather surprised to what Zazu had to say about that. Honestly, it surprised him to think that they did look at him that way. “The way you and dad talk about it they sound like guardian angels to everyone who lives in this place,” he paused. Smiling a little. “It’s nice to think there’s a group that’s always watching us.”
The teen blew a strand of his hair away. “I will say one thing about the ceremony. I do feel a lot more... Connected to it all since,” he admitted. “Like the same feeling. Like something is always watching and listening now. So it does make sense. Even Rafiki mentioned them before I went out there like they had to approve of the whole thing.”
He then added jokingly. “In which case, thank you for not striking me down instead.” With a look to the sky.

The bird nodded, "Well, be ready for bad news as well as good." he said, trying to hold back on the cynicism, he was just being realistic. "You have already struck tragedy on your journey, yet with it gained a family your mother would be proud of." he reminded. "Guardians, for sure." he said, not seeming to know what an angel was.
He smiled broadly, "Rafiki is strange, that is for sure... I think he puts too much stock in them, it's not always related to them. They guide us, nothing more." he claimed, looking up to the sky. "Kion's roar is one thing, but if they did not strike down Scar..." he shivered, "It is only in situations most grave, most dire, that we would see anything so direct except through The Roar." he nodded as he spoke.
"You are one of us. The great kings of the past are supposed to be the wisest. Do you think it would be wise to reject you? To keep us from what you can teach us, and for us both to learn from this experience? I don't think so." he shrugged.

Kabili knew Zazu was definitely right. There was no doubt, whatsoever, that there would be both good and bad news. “It’ll definitely be an interesting reunion when we do find the others. A lot of humans say lions are dangerous,” he admitted. “So I’m going to have the most explaining to do. Starting with why I’m not going back with them.”
Most grave or most dire? Well he definitely knew that was true since he’d literally heard the voice when he was on the verge of dying. “That explains why they spoke to me while I was on the verge of death.” He managed.
Huh, he guessed Zazu did make a point. It wasn’t like he, as Sam, had hated animals or wished harm or anything. He was just a kid, and one that knew both the beauty and danger of animals like a lions. Curious if anything. “I guess you’re right. I mean it’s not like I was a bad person,” he explained. “I was more totally awestruck about it all. Like I always thought it’d be cool to see things from an animal point of view. But never thought I actually would.”

The hornbill smirked, "Just between you and me, lions are quite dangerous. But they are also civilized, of course." he said, he felt the reputation was deserved for their teeth and claws, and size. "Yes... I imagine that will be difficult, and you should bring someone with you. When the time comes of course." he clearly hoped it would be a while before they met more humans.
He nodded to Kabili taking note of the dire situation he had been in before. "An animal point of view, at least in a way..." he hrmed, "You may be a bit old to play pretend, but if you follow my job you will get at least the animal perspective on things. Through the eyes of an animal, that is a dream... but perhaps..." he put his wing to his beak in thought. "Who knows. Such an experience could come." he shrugged. He seemed to be more realistic than cynical.

Kabili nodded in agreement at bringing someone. If he didn’t there was a good chance the humans would try to force him back. He was hardly the first human animals attempted to raise after all. “I’d have to. Humans have tried to be raised by animals before and humans try to “rehabilitate” then,” he explained with a shudder. “They think they’re saving them and maybe they are inn some cases but I definitely don’t want that.”
That was true, he guessed. He could only see it from their perspective, and do most things they could at least. “I am starting to act more like one of the Pride though I’ve noticed. I actually went down for a drink to the watering hole the other day. And didn’t mind people watching,” he admitted. “Up until then I’d just been filling up my bottle of water. Still do before I go to sleep - but other than that...”

The bird nodded his beak, "...Precisely. I would recommend someone of the Lion Guard. Or Simba himself." he hrmed, "We may have other options by then, also." he said, shaking his head. "Rehabilitate... I've heard such words, they never mean good news. he sighed. "We will be ready. he smiled.
"Excellent. Keep working at fitting in, and on those nerves." he chuckled a bit, "Have you gotten any stares? Or have you paid attention? We do need to address if anyone has objection to you. Especially... the more you become a prince and take on my duties..."

Kabili nodded at the idea of being rehabilitated. He’d heard of the nut houses and how unpleasant they were after all. But he also felt like he didn’t have a lot to fear since he had a lion Pride on his side. “I’m not too afraid though. I really don’t think mom or dad would let them take me away like that,” he pointed out. Least he hoped not. “I mean I did tell dad about the same stuff anyway...” Though of course he could mildly doubt it even if he tried not to - he was still new and all.
For sure fitting in. No more nerves. But stares! He had to think about that for a moment - since he honestly hadn’t exactly paid a ton of attention. Or tried not to. “Sometimes the other animal kids might be a little apprehensive about letting me hang out,” he admitted. “Most do them aren’t though I think we’re getting past that. I haven’t met anyone who’s been hostile to me yet - but I’m sure it’ll happen. I’ve kind of interrupted the natural order around here.”

Zazu nodded, "You are his family now, you will certainly not be leaving except under your own free will... even if it coems to violence." While the king had been restrained with Zira, that was a matter of threat and intimidation, not of Kabili being physically taken. Far different, indeed. "Though hopefully it won't, and we can even... improve relations rather than remain too guarded." he hrmed.
The hornbill shook his head, We have, indeed. Until Kupatana that's something you ought to practice. See how others look at you, see if they are accepting, or scared, or hostile... we can do nothing without knowledge. If you do encounter them, you must learn how to deal with it. To make them feel more comfortable around you, or to not make yourself a target... You cannot handle your responsibilities without their support and respect.

Kabili smiled a little. Honestly he hoped it wouldn’t come to that, but the notion they wouldn’t let him go back there made him relax a bit. It scared him sometimes - his eyes lifted toward Pride Rock. “I’m glad you guys feel that way. I just... Don’t tell dad, OK? That’s the thought that scared me the most. Getting adopted then getting torn away,” he said. Crossing his arms. “Sometimes I have nightmares about it - not a lot. Just... I got so lucky and I want it to stay that way.”
He shook his head. “Sorry maybe I’m over sharing. You’re just easy to talk to, y’know that?”
When Zazu explained how he had to deal with them, and furthermore learn to command their respect. Or show them he would be comfortable to be around. He tapped his chin thoughtfully. “I can work on that. I like meeting new animals, and speaking to new people,” he explained. “I just can be shy sometimes. I need to break myself of that.”
