Simba nodded "We have to ration, at times. Especially in the dry season." he said, "Mostly water, as you can guess." he was not looking forward to this one, that was for sure.
Thurston came up close to Sam, and gave him a sniff. "No, I'm sure I would know who you are, if so, whoever you are." He blinked, his nose right in Sam's face. "What I saw was bigger. At least bigger than you!" he said confidently, "Strangely enough they had the same amount of hair. What a curious creature it was... Anyway my king, something needs to be done. Hey wait..." he looked at Sam again "Since when is your son a monkey?"
Simba rolled his eyes, "This is Sam, I've taken him in under my wing, as he lost his family."
Thurston seemed even more confused than he was. "Your wing? How is he going to find his family in there? I can't even find your wings!"

Sam nodded a little.
At least he was used to it whereas a rich kid would feel appalled he was simply grateful that he didn’t have to ration all the time. Or go to bed hungry. “Don’t worry I’m ok with that. I have lots of practice,” he then added. “We don’t have a lot of money that got us food back home. So I’m used to that. I’m just going to have to learn to cook my meat out here. I can’t eat it raw or we get sick.”
Sam listened intently to Thurston as he definitely described adult humans. A deep breath filling his lungs as he turned to Simba and nodded. It was a good thing, it meant they were alive and hopefully hadn’t caused any problems yet. “Did you see how many of them? Did they have any big silver sticks?” He asked motioning for emphasis. “Because it sounds like the adults we’ve been looking for to me.”
As he asked about him however he straightened a little. But did chuckle a little. “Uh, what his majesty means is he’s adopting me into his family,” Sam explained. Pretty sure it was an instance where he’d want him to be formal. “Don’t worry I’m not Kion. Or a monkey...”

Simba blinked, confused. "Cook? I've heard of that but hrm." It was foreign to him, clearly. "You will have to show me." he resolved.
Thurston meanwhile rolled his eyes, "Oh! Well why couldn't he just say that?" He moved around Sam to have a look. "If you're not Kion or a monkey then what are you?" he asked, "There was at least two of them, I know because they were talking, of course."
Simba nodded. "Well, let us know right away if you see them again. There isn't much we can do until we can get on their tail." Simba immediately regretted the expression as Thurston replied, "On their tails? I know I didn't see any tails.
Simba groaned, "I mean, just keep an eye out for them and come to Pride Rock if you see them again." he said, visibly annoyed. "Sam, we will head to Pride Rock and make sure Zazu is on the lookout too."

Showing an animal cooking would definitely be interesting. Though he could definitely figure it out he wasn’t sure how much an animal on a diet of raw meat would like it. “I’ll gladly show you when I do it,” Sam said in a perky tone. “Really there’s a whole bunch of human stuff I can show you all. Well, the stuff you guys can use anyway.”
When Thurston started to circle him Sam simply closed in on his statements about the humans. There were two - that meant that more had likely survived because it sounded like they’d been sent out as a pair for safety. “Thanks Thurston,” he explained. “Believe it or not you’ve been a huge help.”
He nodded in agreement as Simba said they’d head back. But waited until they were out of earshot to say his next statement - not wanting to cause panic. “People definitely survived. Probably not just two either,” Sam replied honestly. “Humans like to go out in pairs. We call it scouting - and if they weren’t hunting or anything sounds like they were looking.”

Simba let out an odd sound, a "Hrrm." he wasn't sure what to think of the process, and whether it would be wise for animals to learn it. "Before we tell everyone, run it by me and my family." he oddly didn't look at Thurston as one might expect, it would be carnivores he would worry of, of course.
Simba nodded as they made their leave, "Besides it is almost time for breakfast." he said, "I'm not sure what you typically do for food, but I have one more lesson today that we will have as we eat. Once we each get our food, would you like to eat at?" it was a slight test of his geography for him to name a place, but not entirely intended to be.

Sam nodded his head.
Though he could understand Simba’s hesitation. He was sure there was some things that humans did that animals shouldn’t be trying after all. “Yes sir, don’t worry I wouldn’t do that.” Sam replied honestly. “This is your home after all. I mean - I guess it’s my home too but still.”
Sam looked a little surprised. Food this early? Sam had been used to not actually having breakfast on the table. He and his mom had food for supper, but breakfast and lunch were a little harder unless they had a bit more money. He almost felt like it was a stupid question but he still responded... “Well probably best to eat in our area huh?” He asked. “Can we do it at the top of Pride Rock? I never actually got to see it that high up,” he admitted. “I’ve been wondering what the view is like... It must be something else.”
He paused, and wondered what his other lesson would be before adding. “Are you sure I’m not taking too much food if I have breakfast too though? I don’t want to take more than I should even if food y’know literally grows on trees.”

Simba nodded, Sam's understanding more than pleased him. "Yes, it is your home. I would prefer you learn to be like us, before we learn too much from you. We may know the best way to introduce things like cooking without..." he looked to the trees, "Well we have some very... unwise friends."
Thurston was just the tip of the iceberg, could one cook things other than meat? "Bunga..." he shuddered at the thought of the badger. "That is true, but not required, as long as you give precedence to those in their own areas." he said with a wise tone. "You have not? Well, a good reason to go then. You can see all the land... In fact that's perfect." he chuckled at how that lined up.
"We all eat what we need, however we divide it. I prefer a breakfast and a dinner." he said, emphasizing personal preference. "Usually breakfast leaves plenty for a smaller lunch for the young ones who don't need much." He walked and talked with Sam, back east toward Pride Rock.

Sam could also understand that.
After all, Sam was the one that needed to feel at home. So in order to do that he had to learn it all right? With a smile, he nodded his head. “Well, I won’t have a hard time accepting that,” he explained politely. “You’ve made it really easy to feel at home, even before this. Everyone has... and I just want to make sure I do the right things here.”
With a blush he even admitted... “Honestly, about a few weeks in I don’t think I really wanted to go back. I just didn’t think a reason for me to stay would show up.” He then added. “So I’d rather learn from you guys first anyway.”
Wow the whole land! That was a crazy thought wasn’t it? Sam would love to be able to see just how big things were. Maybe even get a full scan of Simba’s kingdom so he knew. “That sounds awesome,” he explained honestly. “I might sneak up there for the sunrise one day if that’s true. Just seeing it further down was amazing I can’t imagine up there if that’s the case...”
Wow, breakfast and a dinner? All the time? Sam’s lips curled into a smile. His mom would have loved that. She’d always felt so bad about how little food she could put on the table. “I can get used to that. I used to go to bed hungry a lot - not my mom’s fault. Like I said we lived a tight life,” he licked his lips. “Don’t worry though. Us humans don’t eat as much as lions do I think. So a lot to me is probably a little to you.” He admitted with a chuckle

Simba nodded, "Well, don't worry too much on doing what is right. You can always come to your new family when you need advice, we will always be there for you."
He smiled, "You are more than welcome whenever we are not busy to visit the top of Pride Rock. We ask certain... respect, of course." More lessons to come, but too complex to go over at the moment. "You shouldn't go to bed hungry." he said, short, and simple. No further elaboration was needed!
"Just be honest about what a human eats, we will be able to tell if you are hungry, after all."
Simba and Sam would soon be on their way to Pride Rock, and ascending to the top.

Sam nodded he had a feeling that the royal family was very tight anyway. “Of course, your - Simba,” man he really had to her this “your majesty” thing out of his vocabulary. “Sorry I’ll get used to just Simba I swear. My mom just taught me to show respect with important people.”
Respect of course. After all, he could imagine Pride Rock somewhat served as a throne of sorts to the king. Since he hadn’t actually seen a throne and it was just so far above the rest of the Pridelands. He was thinking about that even more as they continued to approach that.
With what humans ate? Hmmmm. “Don’t worry I’ll be sure to make sure. If anything I can ask that Zazu guy if I’m allowed up or not,” he seemed to take care of those things. Or so he noticed. “But humans can eat pretty much anything. We’re omnivores. Meat, fruits, plants. Heck some of us even eat bugs.” He chuckled as he began to climb the slope.
“Speaking of Zazu, by the way. What is that guy’s deal? Is he like your royal advisor?” He asked curiously. He’d had a few run-Ins with him, namely when he was on that “morning report” kick.

Simba nodded, "There is nothing wrong with addressing me so formally, it just feels weird from my son... and it will be easier if you learn to call me Simba, eventually you may be calling me dad, after all..." he said.
As they climbed higher, the king let out a "Mhm. Zazu is always informed. It is his duty." He informed, and lead into his other question. "That he is, he is responsible for reporting anything that is going on, my father hired him and I kept him, even though well... as a cub I wanted him fired." he admitted. "We've had a long and rough relationship but, he is my greatest friend after my wife of course."
He thought of Zazu, "He may have an attitude, but you would need one to hang around carnivores who's kids play rough with you." he defended. "He is wise, without him I would not be much of a king."

Had Simba just give him permission to call him dad when he was ready? Who was he kidding of course he had. But it was a little shocking... Sam guessed he’d meant it when he’d told him he would be treated in equal footing with his own biological kids.
“It’ll just take me a little to shift my gears. I’ve been treating it like I’m a guest here,” he explained honestly. “Now I’m here to stay and I’m going to be the king’s son that’s a whole other ballpark.”
Sam had to chuckle as Simba recounted some facts about his childhood with Zazu; the guy must have been around a long time. “Nah don’t get me wrong Zazu seems really nice just sarcastic. My kind of guy,” he told him with a small smile. “I mean he already has my respect for not freaking out when I showed up bloody and beaten. I owe him as much as I owe you.”
He did give a cheeky grin. “I mean I get it though. He does seem like he’d be fun to mess with.”

Simba smiled, "You have been a fine guest, but yes you are becoming more than that, and so soon..." he was certain he wasn't moving too fast, but did acknowledge it was. "Not many get along with Zazu, well... without just liking to mess with him. He is small and easy to push around." he said, his tone sounding more like advice on how to play with him than compassion.
"Zazu can be very brave when he needs to be. Just don't take mischief too far." he warned, "I remember one day very well." they would soon approach the den where food lay out. A zebra lay, about half eaten but fresh, in the center. Off to the side was what looked like a gift of food, someone had been watching Sam gather or eat, and enough food for a solid meal would be waiting for him. Was it merely a meal made ready for him, or a gift, and from who...?

Sam nodded a little. Though it had seemed like an eternity since he’d first gotten here. It’d only been roughly a month and a half. Though he also wasn’t complaining. He did smirk when he mentioned how easy Zazu was to push around. “I’ll keep that in mind,” he added. “He reminds me of this old teacher back in school though. I was homeschooled but my friends told me about it.” He thought and then added. “Which is where humans have our lessons.” He then noted. “So what did Zazu do?” He asked regarding the one day.
Along the way, he grabbed some fallen branches to make a fire.
Zebra. Sam was a little hesitant at first. What did it actually taste like? Though he supposed he wouldn’t know until he tried it. “Well it was nice of someone to leave food,” Sam smiled before taking out his pocket knife. He was careful carve carefully into the meat and take a thick strip of it. “God I didn’t think anything so foreign could look so good. I’ve been living on berries for almost two months.” He joked.
He was careful to take the supplies outside to make his fire and use his knowledge of camping to cook the zebra meat as carefully as he could. Only putting out the fire once it looked cooked enough before moving to join Simba on the rock. “I mean it smells good,” Sam mentioned. Before taking a small bite of it. It was a little hard to bite off but with some effort he managed to. “Mmm gamey. But not bad. Kinda reminds me of when my mom’s friend made...”
He stopped his thoughts when he finally caught sight of the view from the rock. Holy crap. Was that even bigger than he was expecting. “... Whoa.”

Simba watched Sam while he got to work on slicing his food, and cooking... he went to the edge of Pride Rock, raw meat in his maw, dripping a small amount of blood. He watched, Sam very apprehensive of fire as he spoke to him. "Oh... It was more what I did. Nala, and I. We ditched him to... follow my uncle's suggestion to go to somewhere dangerous. We almost got killed."
He said, simply. "It is a dangerous place to live if you don't follow rules. Dangerous places, dangerous animals. We have safety only as long as we stay where we are safe, and we can't always..." he ripped into the zebra leg, starting to eat.
He chuckled "Yes, everything the light touches is my kingdom..." he looked around. "This is where my dad first spoke to me of the Circle of Life." he explained, "While we meat-eaters, lions... humans, eat other animals..." he hrmed, clearly while he knew the message well, he didn't know so well to put it to words. "They will eat us, when we become the grass. We all have our place, in the end we all get eaten by one another."
He took a breath, "We work together for the good of each other. The prey accept that just as we protect them and befriend them, we will eat them, their family, and their friends. We try to be as kind as we can about it. We eat the old, weak, and sick for the health of the herd. Never the children or the leaders, like Thurston, until their successor is ready."
