Sam... Also knew that feeling. His mom had been his whole world. Whereas he’d never had a dad. So the thought of ever doing anything to upset her? Well that didn’t sit well with them. “Sarabi seems like the cool and calm type.” Sam agreed,
Sam smirked, definitely excited at the thought of siblings. He’d only had some friends back home but then again... “And time to enjoy them. Back home everything was work. I think I’ve run and played more than I ever did.” He paused as he thought of something else as Simba mentioned fathers. “That’s another thing I was thinking about last night... I uh, if I’m really starting over here I should probably change my name and blend in more.”
He cleared his throat as he made it clear why. “And besides, my dad gave me my name. He was never around anyway...” He added, it was clear from the displeasure in his voice that Sam actively blamed him for what happened anyway. “I don’t know a lot of African names. But I can probably try to think of a few.” He added.
His jaw set as Simba mentioned Zira’s desire for their death. What exactly had caused that? “I don’t get it though. Everyone in the Pridelands think you and your dad were amazing kings,” he managed. “Why do they have such a problem with yo... Us?” He had to get used to that.

Simba nodded, "That she is." he said softly, he hadn't much of a relationship with her as such, he was too busy with everything, but they at least talked about things regularly. "Well, at least now you will learn, too." he said, he remembered the days he would run all day with a fond smile.
"I don't know why she is... as evil as she is. She wants her son Kovu on the throne, because Scar chose him. Even though I am rightful king, and he was such a horrible one... After she attacked me, I had no choice but to exile her, and her family, and her pride. She didn't take it well."

Sam nodded his head a little. He was sure he’d like the freedom the Pridelands provided more at least, that was for sure. “Right, I just wish I had brought some sort of dictionary or something,” he murmured. Then again, he was sure that... “But I guess even if I really want to adopt a new name you guys have names that are totally different huh? I mean I heard there’s a guy named Bunga.”
Ew. Her son? That thing had kids? God help them all. “That’s a scary thought, I don’t think I’d want anyone related to that around,” he admitted rather honestly. After a moment he then decided to ask. “So any idea what the hippos want anyway? Seems pretty chill here so far.”

Simba had gotten focused on Zira, again, and missed the far more important question of Sam's name... "We have time to think on it, sometimes you plan it well ahead of time, and other times it comes in the heat of the moment." he smiled... "It would help you to fit in, to have a name more familiar. I did intend to name Kiara, if she was a boy, Kopa." He hummed, "By the time we had Kion I had changed my mind on that name..." he mused.
As they entered Big Springs now, he looked at the leader. "I don't have a clue... Basi!" he called with royal volume. "You needed me to come talk?" he reminded.
Basi nodded, "Good to see you, your majesty!" he replied, "Do you really expect this new Lion Guard to be able to handle all the herds, with just five lions?"
"Well, I..." Simba paused to think on the question

Sam nodded his head a little, he guessed that did make sense based on African customs. It was all kind of cool to him, especially if they carried meaning of some sort. “That’s cool. I can kind of imagine that it’s hard sometimes. But yeah, I’m all in for changing it,” Sam replied. “It’ll probably make moving on a little easier too, honestly...”
After another thought grazed his mind. He decided to ask another question that had crossed his mind the night before. He decided to just go ahead. “So.. I mean I’ve never been in a situation like this before. But are there any boundaries I need to know about?” He asked. “With your family I mean.”
The teen was initially silent when Simba decided to call out and the hippo seemed to immediately jump down the king’s throat. Seriously? Was he honestly going to just jump to conclusions like that? What about the benefit of the doubt!?
“I mean, Kion seems really capable if you ask me,” he decided to interject politely. After all, if he did want to be in this family there’d be times he’d probably be necessary to speak. “I mean, I get being worried. He’s a cub. But if he hasn’t screwed up yet it doesn’t mean he will, right?”

Simba tilted his head at Sam's question, "Boundaries? What do you mean by that?" he asked, if he was one of their boyfriends, sure, but otherwise... he had no idea what Sam was getting at.
Basi looked at Sam, but his expression was hard to read. Simba meanwhile, seemed... either offended or nervous. Perhaps even he didn't know which it was. He did look determined. "Not just any five lions, but my son." he said assuringly. "And the others will be the strongest, fastest, bravest, and keenest of sight. I have the utmost confidence in my son, and his guard!" he declared, boldly. "As long as they have the herds' trust." he turned the uncertainty onto Basi
Basi soon smiled, "I can tell you believe it whole-heartedly." he said, "He will have our trust, and support."

Sam pursed his lips supposing the lion wasn’t used to shyness. A quality Sam sometimes had without meaning to. “I just mean are there things I’m not allowed to do? Like do I eat with you guys, and sleep in that dogpile thing with you all?” He asked curiously. “I mean - I just don’t want to do anything that makes anyone uncomfortable I guess?” He asked curiously.
Sam took a deep breath as the adults continued their talking and even bigger one when the hippo seemed to calm down and stand down a bit. Maybe he had just read the situation wrong but who knew. After all, they were coming off a war of their own.
“And I’m sure Kion will be happy to hear that,” The teen explained honestly. Then titled his head and added. “After all from what Simba was telling me it sounds like this place practically would be up a creek without a paddle without you guys.”

Simba seemed caught off-guard. "Dogpile? We are cats." he says, offended by the implication of another species. "You may certainly do as you choose to, but I welcome you as if you were my own flesh and blood. To eat and sleep with us, only as much as you are comfortable." he smiled, "We will have to explain bathing..." he knew monkeys did it different, at least.
The king seemed tense about how Sam stated that so openly, but Basi reacted positively. "I'm glad he is following in his father's footsteps." he nodded. "Who is this boy?" he asked, and Simba replied. He didn't seem to pay the boy any mind... that Simba had him with him showed he was friendly.

Sam held up his hands a little. Quick to explain. “No it’s a figure of speech where I come from Simba, sorry. It doesn’t actually mean dogs,” Sam explained honestly. Hoping that Simba would understand though his eyes met his to read his expression.
He really meant that? Honestly even though Sam wouldn’t admit it openly - he’d been missing that comfort. He’d been left to grieve alone most of the time, after all. “No, I definitely want to do it. It just might take some getting used to,” he admitted with a smile. “I mean the way you guys slept looked comfortable, i just didn’t...I’m overthinking it.” He blushed a little.
Honestly the more Simba spoke the more he didn’t know if he’d ever be able to return the favor for his kindness even with his loyalty. “I’ll just take your kids lead then I guess.” He knew he’d take some things slowly. But he also knew in the back of his mind his mom would gently nudge him.
That said he was a little surprised when the hippo had actually asked who he was. Sam tried to think of the best way to put it right now - though for a moment he wanted to put it in human terms. “I’m uh - I uh...” But at the same time, he remembered how Kion had worn being Simba’s son as a badge of honor.
If Simba was willing to treat him as an equal and his own. He should start showing the same courtosey. Even in this small way. “I’m Sam,” he finally introduced himself. “I’m Simba’s new son. He just wanted me to start getting used to stuff around here.”

Simba nodded, "That would please me greatly, I would be happy to see you acting just like them. We are one." he said with a smile, "It will be awkward for them too, I am sure, but if you can show confidence they will be happy with it." he put his paw to Sam's head, and ruffled his hair playfully.
"Indeed. I am taking him in as mine, as he needs a father." he said, "He is coming with me today so he can learn to be one of us."

Sam... Actually smiled when his hair was ruffled. Some of his own nerves washing away. He’d gone to sleep yesterday unsure whether Simba had meant his words or simply wanted to sleep better at night since he’d been on his own. But he could feel the honesty coming off the lion that told him all he needed to know.
That said, it was only reaffirmed as Simba had reaffirmed his relationship to him to someone else. It was the first time, and further settled the knots in his stomach. “Right, gotta walk before you can run like my mom used to say,” he explained as he crossed his arms. “It’s actually really cool to meet you, I’ve never seen a hippopotamus in person before.”
He did however go silent after knowing Simba may have other things to discuss with this guy. And he should be observing more than anything.

Simba hummed. "It is fine. Sorry, I was just confused." He didn't want to bring up the Jackal Problem right now, and nodded at Sam's understanding.
Basi chuckled, "I've never met, well, whatever you are. Who am I to judge who the king adopts?" he said with a smile, even if it was a strange creature, Sam was something other than a lion... and he seemed a good boy. Basi was pleased, if anything.
They would banter a little bit about other, lesser concerns for a while. -----
"Great to talk with you, Basi!" Simba said with a royal smile, before he turned to face south, and beckoned Sam to follow. "We have one more important meeting this morning. I hope he understands the delay ..." he said, a bit more troubled, he turned to face south. "Let's head through the grassland instead of the floodplains, to Chakula Plains." he decided with a smile. "You should most of all remember where it is.
"The zebra live there. They are, in their own way, as important as the hippos, and... unfortunately not as understanding." he frowned. "But we have not had any major trouble with them."

Sam smiled a little. But continued to let them chat until Simba made it clear they were done.
The zebras? Sam was silent a moment trying to think how they wouldn’t be as understanding. But after a few minutes, it finally hit him. Oh right, lions ate zebra, that probably didn’t help did it? “Well I can probably understand why, aren’t they part of you- I mean our diet?” Sam asked curiously. “I’m guessing that’s why I need to know it well. Probably got lots of rules about that.”
He was curious to see what kind of relationship they had with prey animals. Prey, that was interesting to think basically he was a predator now. “That’s the part that’s kind of crazy to me. Where I come from animals don’t talk,” he managed. “Is it really not a big deal that they eat them?”
Sam was used to rationing food so that was kind of crazy to him. It opened up a whole host of food but also came with a cost in his opinion.

Simba nodded. "That's part of it yes." he said, "They and the antelope both are the most popular food." he said, as he approached the zebra leader. "It is their place, in the circle of life. When the time comes we feed, and they understand that." he said, "We have no choice but to eat animals, at least we live among them while they live, and only take the lives we need." he didn't seem fond of talking about the nature of it all, beyond the Circle of Life of course.
"There you are, your highness!" the zebra leader, Thurston said. "I've been looking everywhere for you. You said you would be here last night, but I don't think you were here at all. I looked everywhere!" he said indignant.
Simba sighed, "No, I wasn't here last night, I was busy. What is it you needed to talk about?"
Thurston snorted, "Well, I was busy too, looking for you... oh right. What was it again...?" he began to pace, trying to remember. "I mean really, I asked you here for something the other day, I waited for you and looked for you... but what was it... I saw a new animal! That was it!" he said finally. "Would you know anything about that?"
Simba sighed, "See what I mean?" he asked Sam. "What kind of new animal...?" he asked, visibly annoyed. Thurston would take some more pacing to remember that.

Sam nodded his head.
He guessed if they understood it he wasn’t afraid as much as he had been. Though he did have to think on it - that meant there was food everywhere. He wasn’t at all used to it. “Man so food is kinda everywhere then,” Sam admitted as he rubbed his stomach. “That’s gonna be weird - back home we were still rationing. Food shortages from the war and all.”
Sam paused as he watched Thurston’s little freak out.
The zebra seemed nervous, but then again he couldn’t say he was surprised. It was intimidating to be around the king, he should know, it had freaked him out the first time. He let them be for a moment before the creature spoke of a new animal and his ears perked up.
“Wait! Did they look like me!?” He asked - eager to find out as usual if anyone had seen the remainder of their expedition. “Sorry I mean - uh. My former “pride” uh... They’ve been missing a while now.”
He figured it was easier to just call them that rather than “friends”, or “expeditioners”. Though he shot a look of apology at Simba for his outburst,
