It was getting to be another day down at Pride Rock.
Honestly, since his talk with Kion, Sam had started to feel marginally better about his place there. He was making friends, and despite how strange it all was, he kind of liked it here more than he expected to. Enough so a part of him wondered... Even if he could get out... Could go back, would he?
Then again, he wasn’t sure that the opportunity was ever coming. What with him still kind of the only human in sight.
His stomach filled with his meal of fruits and plants Sam sighed a bit as he prepared to get ready for another night of sleep at his little crook of the mountain. Sure it wasn’t exactly the time he’d go to sleep yet, but it was the time to get ready for it - especially these days.
Setting up his pack like a pillow as usual Sam made a good surveyance that none of the predators had decided to sneak up in the meantime. Before having a seat and taking a look up at the stars. Star gazing had been probably the only thing that kept him up at night anyway.
“If only she could see these...” He murmured.

Simba made his way back to Pride Rock, the day was coming to an end and his duties for the day were finally taken care of, or most of them. The rest would need to be done bright and early tomorrow. While Sam had been tended to after Simba found him after the crash, he still worried for the boy. Kion had talked to the boy, and this at least pleased him... for he may soon be calling this strange boy a brother.
"Hello." he said, simply. Then he thought of what to say. "Are you going bed already, or just relaxing?" he asked, "We didn't get to talk much before, as we were tending to your condition... and then I got busy. But, I am free to speak with you now." he smiled a friendly smile, framed by his royal mane. His cubs must have already gone to bed with their mother, he presumed. "I heard you met with my son, I trust he was friendly?"

Sam was a little startled.
Of course, he probably shouldn’t have been. Simba did own the place after all, but since their first meeting he’d honestly tried to keep his distance. Again, not to be rude, but only because he was a stranger here, and he was the king after all.
But he did stick by his statement the night before that he had great respect for him. After all, if it hadn’t been for him - well he wouldn’t be here right now would he? “Good evening your majesty,” he gave a slight bow. “Oh no! I was just getting relaxed. I don’t usually go to bed for at least another hour.”
Oh! Right, Kion. No wonder he was down here. Honestly, he probably would have checked up on things too... Him being some new guy and that being his cub and all. “Oh! Kion seems cool. Honestly, I learned a lot from him yesterday,” he admitted. “Honestly the more I’m out here the more I’m starting to learn y’know? You guys have a pretty sweet set-up.”
For a moment he paused - then decided he’d probably answer a question he didn’t doubt weighed on the king’s mind. “I tried finding my people by the way. A few days ago at the falls. I recognized it as near where we crashed,” he explained. Honestly. “But i think mom and I were the only ones who landed there. So they could pretty much be anywhere on this Savannah. Hopefully not doing anything stupid...”
Well aside from what the one had done to the meerkat anyway. “Listen I wanted to thank you again for granting me sanctuary and all,” he added. Deciding he’d take the same time to do just that. “If there’s anything I can do to repay it - let me know, ok? I may just be a kid but I’m sure there something.”

The king raised his paw as Sam bowed, "Please, no need for formality." He honestly only wanted to see it at formal events, but he figured that would be a rather long explanation on what constituted as formal... that was for Zazu to explain.
"I would say about the same, but it depends on how busy I have been." he chuckled softly. "I'm pleased to hear he taught you something, I'm sure you have as much to teach him about your ways. He has a lot of responsibility now..." he said, almost sadly. "The Lion Guard." he confirmed what he meant, looking at Sam.
He frowned to hear the humans were scattered. "We'll find them, I am sure they are safe, and causing no trouble... or Kion would be on top of it." he said reassuringly. "They could be hiding, as well... I hope they have food if they are." he definitely sounded worried about everyone in his domain.
"You are welcome, Sam." he said softly, "No, don't worry about that at all." he said firmly. "Helping others is its own reward, all I ask is that you respect us, our customs, the Circle of Life..." he smiled broadly.

Sam nodded his head.
Though he wasn’t really sure how much he could teach them. Not without ruining their overall way of life, but he did know that he was enjoying learning. Taking a seat he looked at the king calmly. “That Lion Guard actually sounds like a good idea. If that Zira is around a lot,”’ he admitted honestly. Then added. “I’m pretty impressed with how he seems to handle it. But then again mom always said lion cubs can mature pretty fast,”
That was at least a good thing. And he had guessed the same thing. If anything most of them were probably as scared as he was. “I mean it makes sense if they are. Adult humans aren’t always like us kids. They’d probably feel if they saw me this close to a lion,” he explained. Hell, let alone having a conversation with one. “You should have Kion get me if he does find them. Hopefully I can talk ‘em down talk some sense into them if anything gets too crazy.”
Sam gave his own small smile in response. Figuring that Simba had a good point there, it was a philosophy his mom had shared in his life too. “Believe me I think I’m starting to get this circle of life thing... Hopefully.” He chuckled.
He sat in silence for a few more moments before throwing another response into the hat. “Honestly, I just wish my mom had lived long enough to see it. It’s like I told Kion last night this place was like her paradise,” he replied with a tinge of honesty. “... Sorry I probably shouldn’t talk too much about that.. huh? I mean... Some of the other lions told me about your dad and what happened “
God he needed to learn to shut up sometimes. “I mean, sorry. I just... I guess I’m trying to say I’m sorry you went through the same thing? It sounds like it was pretty rough.”

Simba nodded, "Yes, but I would prefer he not take on Zira himself, and I wish we could keep her in the Outlands where she belongs... but I believe in my son, and his guard." He listened to Sam intently. "I will think about it." His tone didn't have the usual dismissiveness a parent has when they utter those words, he was genuine.
"Y-yes." he stammered. "I'm sorry for your loss..." he looked around, to avert his gaze as much as to think. "It was a paradise, back when he ruled. "But it is the past, and we must learn from it." he said, remembering Rafiki's words. "It is my burden to bear. To fix the damage he caused, to learn from my mistakes as well." he turned his gaze back onto Sam. "I'm sure she would be proud of you. Learning from lions, living among them." he sighed, "After... well, you know, I was raised by a meerkat and warthog... Timon, and Pumbaa." he explained. "They never expected me to return to reclaim the throne from him,. Your mother I'm sure never expected anything you are about to face." he gulped, "Some day, I may call you 'Son'."

Sam nodded his head a little.
He was starting to learn just that - what it was like to bare that burden. It was like a weight in your chest that just didn’t seem to go away. A legacy you weren’t sure you were going to be able to live with. “My mom would be freaking out in a good way if she knew where I was right now,” Sam replied, he carefully removed his notebook from his backpack. “I’ve actually been continuing her research. I hope you uh, don’t mind. I don’t think I’ll ever actually make it back to civilization to tell anyone. But it’s a good way to keep her memory alive.”
His words drowned out a little as he began to process Simba’s words. Trying to figure out what he was getting at. It took him a long moment to process it but as he finally got a hold of himself, his eyes met Simba’s after a moment. “You maj- Simba. I’m honored but I couldn’t ask you to take me in like that. You’re a king... You’ve got two Cubs,” he began, stumbling over his words. “I don’t even know the first thing...”

Simba frowned, it was only a slight frown, but the king's presence made his expressions carry extra weight. "I thank you for bringing this to my attention." he started, "Take care to not share anything... confidential." he said sternly. "I do approve of research, don't get me wrong. You should talk to Rafiki, he keeps our history after all." his frown turned to a smile,
"In a way everyone in the Pridelands are my children, some just closer than others... and you I've taken in to my home." he said, "We will see in time, I haven't even introduced you to my wife, the queen yet."

Sam nodded his head.
He figured there were things that the lions didn’t want to get out. Though could animals even read? He didn’t honestly know - it was hard to tell what was real anymore. “Oh the mandrill or baboon or whatever that helped me out?” He asked... Recalling that he was a little crazy. But not too bad. “Don’t worry your secrets are safe with me though. I wouldn’t want it going back home with anyone or anything... Especially not after what it was like when I left.”
He imagined what it could end like if... Well, someone decided to just roll up here in tanks, fighter jets, the works. World War II had done so may horrible things to so many countries after all.
Sam could feel the gears grinding in his head. Trying to process this. A part of him looked down at his backpack, then back up at the king. There were several things he could do, including being stubborn and saying it was too much to handle. But what did he do then? He could be stuck here for eternity and there wasn’t a chance in hell he’d survive on his own forever.
He could wait until they found more humans. But there was no guarantee anyone survived - and no humans outside of their crew. “I’ve met Nala... She’s nice,” he managed after he’d been quiet a long time “I just... I guess it’s sort of hitting me that I need to think about the best way to keep going here.”
After a long moment, Sam stood to his feet. “You really think your pride would accept that? I mean I don’t want to do anything that will get you in trouble... and I’ve only been here what? A month?”

Simba smiled at Sam's obedience, then looked worried. "What was it like when you left...?" he asked, not really wanting to know the answer of course, but the human had brought it up. "Yes, he may be... weird, but he's smart!"
He nodded in response to his other statements, "Oh? Wonderful. Then she will know you herself when I discuss this. You are of course welcome to think about it, and... ultimately I can't force it." he admitted.
"If Nala supports it, then we will bring it to the pride, and others... If we take you in, officially, you will know you will be accepted. But, well... the word will get around once I start asking." he hummed. "So, be ready for that." he warned.

Sam looked thoughtful before explaining about the state of the world. After all it was a long story so he had to really simplify it. “There was a big war and a lot of people died,” Sam explained honestly. “This guy named Hitler tried to exterminate a whole race of people. And we had to stop him... A lot of people are still picking up the pieces.”
Sam was silent again when Simba pointed out what it meant. His mouth was a little dry, nerves a little shot. He didn’t want to directly pace in front of the king or look like he wasn’t grateful. Since he was probably the only human in history to probably have this opportunity.
Taking a deep breath, his eyes lifted back to Simba as he tried to keep himself calm. “Thank you, your mai- Simba,” he managed finally. “I don’t know what really to say other than I hope I can prove that I’m worthy of being part of your family.”
As for word getting out... “Yeah, the king inviting the “monkey” into the family gonna turn this place into gossip central isn’t it?” He chuckled nervously.

Simba gulped at the information, "An entire race? That sounds horrible..." He had never witnessed anything like that, even Zira wasn't that evil, was she? "Just like we are picking up the pieces after Scar..." he said, that was the closest image he could picture. Humans were clearly capable of great evil, from the sounds of it, perhaps greater than any lion, fear came into his mind.
He smiled at Sam's next statement, "To serve me well, or make me proud is all I would ask of anyone." he said with confidence. He tried to laugh off Sam's concern. Lying would only leave him unprepared, he put his paw on Sam's shoulder, "Let them gossip. It will help make you one of us." he gave a toothy smile.

Sam nodded in agreement though they did have one bigger difference. One that probably was a little cynical but none the less... “That’s the one difference between our species though. Animals and humans I mean,” he explained. “You had that problem once. We’ve had... So many wars that I can’t even count them. If you’re different in our culture to a lot of people you’re dangerous.”
Sam actually felt a lot of comfort when Simba put a paw on his shoulder.
He let out a big breath of relief as it felt like for the first time a huge weight had lifted from his shoulders without that constant wonder in the back of his mind of what actually might happen to him. “Well I mean, at least I’ll be living with a species I know a little about too,” Sam replied honestly. “I don’t even know how you managed to survive that long living with meerkat and a warthog. That’s... Some crazy stuff.”
Knowing he’d probably be expected to follow Simba back to the den, he was careful to start collecting what he’d laid out back into his backpack. “This should scare the crap out of the meerkat though, huh?” He asked. “He seemed pretty freaked out when he saw me last time.”

Simba gave a soft shrug, but Sam was definitely building up a fear of man in the king. "Scar wasn't the only bad lion, and that wasn't the first bad thing he did." he didn't seem keen to say more, though. He did believe in Sam's warning. "We will try to keep the Pridelands from falling to such terrible war." he sighed.
He nodded, "What's important is that I did. The bond of friendship and family is strong." he smiled warmly, "Timon is easily scared, but he has courage, and he taught his new kid to be one of the bravest... I'd almost say the bravest." he laughed, if only he was a lion he'd be perfect for the Guard. "We can learn a lot from Timon, I don't think he even realizes that." he stepped back from Sam to put his paw back down. "

Sam nodded.
He didn’t want Simba to think all men were bad. There were definitely a lot of good people after all. People who risked their lives and everything and everyone they had. “Don’t get me wrong there are a lot of good people too. Most of them were on those planes,” Sam replied with a smile. “I think it’s all a matter of reading people. That’s why I knew to trust you the other day.”
Sam could imagine they all had a bit of bravery in them. And he’s probably have to figure out his own bravery when the time came - especially if it ended up that Zion was here. “I see what you mean. I’ve already learned a lot here,” Sam explained honestly. “Probably more of an education than I’d have gotten at home. There it’s all math and science, and bleh.”
When he’d finally zipped his bag back up he then added. “I guess I’m probably just starting that too,” he chuckled. “I have a whole kingdom to learn about now and I feel like I’ve only seen like a third of it.”
