So his first drawing session hadn’t ended so well.
If that’s what you could call Zira showing up and causing havoc like she had anyway. But with his strength slowly returning, so was Sam’s energy so he’d made quick work of trying again. Taking a chance to sketch and record what he could. He still didn’t know who exactly he was doing this all for, but still,
That day he’d gotten back to Pride Rock just as the sun was setting.
He’d gathered some of the fruits and plants that were edible. Still not comfortable eating animals that could, well, talk. But he knew it didn’t matter as long as he was actually eating. Not to mention getting back just in time for the sunset did have its advantages - such as time for stargazing before he passed out for the night.
The beauty of not having a bedtime he guessed.
Yawning he seated himself down near where he’d set up his little part of the rock and started to eat. His eyes gazing toward the sun as he took a deep breath. “I could get used to this...” he murmured.

Sam had been around Priderock for a while already, and even got to meet some of the important local figures. The one figure, in fact, the king! But, surprisingly, he was yet to meet the one most outlanders, or any one faction other than pridelanders, met before the King: The leader of the Lion Guard.
-Monkey!-Could be heard from behind the human cub.
In fact, from above him: a golden lion cub, wiht a bright red mane took the rock just a bit taller than Sam, right behind him, as a seat so he could look down at the larger animal. He had a serious face, with his snout slightly inclined up to denote his noble posiiton.
-You have been here for a while already, and I have been keeping an eye on you. I am Kion, son of King Simba, and leader of the Lion Guard!
Kion was clearly doing his best to sound important! He thought he had to because the boy had already met with his father which could have implied he was allowed to stay. But that was Kion's choice, until big ol' dad said otherwise.

Sam nearly jumped off the ledge.
Balancing himself, he caught himself a little. Though he wasn’t exactly expecting anyone right now. Regardless of the fact that he knew at the moment he was a guest. Still, he’d been about ready to shout he was not a monkey for the thousandth time.
Unfortunately when he did turn to see who it was he saw the prince.
Of course, Sam knew of the prince. He’d seen him and Kiara playing around but he didn’t dare try to rub elbows with royalty at this point. Still he did give a respectful bow - ironic to him since he didn’t sound much younger than him but still... “Uh, human actually, your majesty,” he explained politely. “Though I guess I’m kinda sort of an ape. But still...”
He paused a moment. “I’m not in any trouble am I? I know I’ve been out kinda exploring but I’m still getting used to the rules around here...”

Kion kept his imposing posture on top of the rock as he looked down on the human. The lion liked the other's mane quite a lot. It had an interesting tint to it. He kept the posture until he noticed how easily the boy submitted to his rank! That killed his imposing stance and, instead, Kion had a warm boy-scout smile on his face. Snout pointing down at the human-cub.
-You are not in trouble no
Kion quickly assured him, before jumping from that rock to a smaller one, then one smaller than that... and finally the ground.
-You haven't done a single wrong thing! you haven't stolen from anyone, nor have you attacked others unlawfully!
Kion had some fancy words up his sleeve, definitely not what one would expect from his age, but that came with the job.
-Sam, right? Have you met my dad already?- followed by -It's "your highness"! Your majesty is only for the king!

Sam took a deep breath.
Honestly he was more than anything just a little nervous about this whole thing. After all, if no one else survived the crash he was the sole human here and he didn’t want to overstay his welcome. So the fact that he was assured that he hadn’t done anything wrong definitely helped.
“Nah you don’t have to worry about those things from me. I mean, especially when I’m the stranger here,” he chuckled as he took a seat and grabbed a bite of his apple. “My mom worked with lions - lots of animals really. I like them, and this place is pretty awesome to begin with.”
Finally at least someone knew his name off the bat. Maybe the other Cubs had mentioned it? “Yeah, Sam’s my name. Sorry I’m not that good with how to address people of rank I guess?” He asked, knowing it was better to be honest. “But yeah, your dad seems really awesome. Honestly I can’t thank him enough for letting me stay here - I’d probably be hyena food right now if he hadn’t.”

Kion took a seat right in front of the human cub. He had heard from others, including his dad, the boy's name. Kion had ears in every corner of the land... Or at least he had a guard to help nothing go unnoticed.
-Your mom worked with lions? How so?
Kion seemed interested in that. He had never ventured that far from the Pridelands, he had never seen a human before. Buit the human had seem lions? Perhaps humans were not that uncommon.
-It's ok! I still have problem with the way crocodiles call their leader!- the cub giggled -How do humans govern themselves? Do you have kings too?
Kion lifted his shoulders up, as well as puffing up his chest proudly
-While you are welcome here, you have nothing to worry! I will keep you safe!

Sam chuckled knowing that would throw a bunch of these guys for a loop.
It made him wish his mom was there more than usual. Given she would have... Well, loved Pride Rock. She would have loved for the chance to actually get to know the animals there. Meet and talk to lions, learn their differences. He pulled himself from his thoughts just in time to stop the fear he felt roll down. Pushing it away.
“Uh... Before I was born she was a famous Zoologist. She studied them, best in her field. Did a lot to help preserve the way of life in lions all around the world,” he explained honestly. He knew his mom had given a lot of that up to raise him when his dad had left. But it was still true. “That’s actually why we were here. They needed someone who knew the wildlife of the area on our expedition thing we were on.” He explained.
Governed themselves? That would be the day wouldn’t it? “Some of us have kings. Others have a government of their own,” he explained. “I came from a place that kind of had a king like guy. But we called him a president and we elected him. So no Royal bloodline.”
He did smirk a little at the idea of being protected by... Well, a cub. But now he was curious. “So what’s this Lion Guard thing, sounds pretty serious.”

The golden lion tilted his head to the left a bit, confused. "A zoowhat?" He had never heard that word before! "He sounds like a great... Humaness?" He tried to pull from what was, to him, familiar. "If she respects others and the Circle of Life, she is welcome here just like you!"
The lion glanced over this expedition thing. He thought it all made sense... Humans were clearly not from around the Pridelands, so it must have been quite the expedition!
"You... elect your king?" This sounded... weird. Kion twisted his snout, shaking his whiskers. They elected a king? Why did they have a king then? Without a royal bloodline, where did their king's right to rule come from? But Kion knew better than to complain about other animals traditions. He was happy that it did not involve fighting for kingship, as many other animals did.
"The Lion Guard is the sacred guard that protects the Pridelands!" He spoke up with his still prideful posture "We make sure no one threatens the monarchy or the circle of life! We keep things in check and we keep hyenas out of our borders!" And he let the human process it before adding "And I am their leader! As the second born to the king, it'smy duty. Also because I have the Roar of the Elders!"

Humanness actually made him laugh a little.
The thought of his mom being called that was pretty hilarious but it made him glad they didn’t have those terms. Though when he mentioned her being welcome there, of course he bit his lip. “She would have loved to be here. But she uh....” he paused. “When I crashed here only one of us made it... Y’know. I guess that’s why your dad let me camp out here... At least close enough to the den that I’m not a sitting duck.” He chuckled nervously. “Without my own “pride” so to speak.”
He paused, deep in thought. “She would have loved this place though. She always thought animals like you guys should be free to roam. To be wild,” he explained. “It would have been a paradise to her.”
Wow. When Kion said it like that he guessed it was a little crazy to think that they were the weird ones with a democracy. Even if it was starting to be used elsewhere. “Kind of crazy, right?” He then added. “But other countries don’t too. It’s just gotten a little hazy over the years, some of them could have kids. You had adopted heirs all kinds of stuff so it was probably just easier.”
Damn, putting all that responsibility on a kid? Sam almost felt like it was a little crazy, but he also was a little awe struck. “Man they let you have all that responsibility? I could barely cross the street without mom having a caniption!”

"O-Oh" Kion let out, surprised by the news. His ears folded, his head lowered a bit as he looked up at the human. "I am sorry to hear that, Sam..." That brought quite the dark mood after such a good laugh. So Kion had to say something "I... have never seen a duck sitting. Only floating" And a silly smile.
"Other countries? So you don't have a big king like we do?" The way the lion saw it, the Pridelands were the world, and those out of it were the few who didn't accept the king's authority.
"Cross... the street?" Kion wasn't exactly sure of what a street was, as the only time he heard street before was an old hippo talking about the hippo lanes. "What's the problem with that? I cross the hippo lanes many times a day to get through the flood plains! Or I can't get the morning patrol done in time!" Kin explained "It is a lot of responsibility, but I was born to it. It is my chance to make my father proud!" He was opening up quite a lot to the kid by this point. "Sometime I feel it is a bit too much... But I can't let the Pridelands down."

Sam was silent.
Honestly, he hadn’t meant to bring the mood down. But it was still a very real pain he was dealing with. Maybe he was supposed to get over it easily, he didn’t know, it was honestly the first time he’d have to deal with grief. “It’s ok... I don’t think she hurt or anything,” he admitted with a shrug. “It’s a figure of speech though. Like I’d pretty much be dead without a bunch of lions a few miles up the rock.” He added with a snort
“No, not really. We used to but we kind of kicked him out of power?” Sam added. “He wasn’t wise or compassionate like your dad seems to be though so there’s that.”
Sam smirked he guessed in a place like this there wasn’t a ton for a lion to worry about. So he probably wouldn’t get it... “I grew up in a big city. A place with a lot of people. Sometimes people there want to hurt Cubs like me,” he explained. “I wasn’t exactly a prince either so I didn’t have immunity.” He joked.
When he mentioned making his dad proud he did nod his head. He could understand that. He always wanted to make his mom proud - couldn’t say the same for his absentee dad. “I can understand why. I’ve heard some stuff from the other Cubs. Seems like he was a pretty brave guy, huh?”

"You kicked your king out?" Kion moved to the next topic. This still sounded ridiculous! Even if it was his own father who fought, defeated and ended the mad king of the Pridelands. Kion's country had its fair share of mad kings, and anything above zero was already pretty bad.
"A... City?" He had a faint memory of that word. Perhaps from a story, he heard somewhere? Most likely one of the crazy myths Rafiki loved to share during nights of full moon. But he had not the faintest of clues as to what the word meant "What is a city?" The lion asked, with curious eyes while looking up at the human cub. "That sounds awful," He said honestly: a place full of animals, and where people wanted to hurt cubs? This was terrible! "Why did your pride let these evil people stay?"
"Dad?" And is boy scout smile was back up. Chest full with pride "Dad is the bravest lion around! Maybe the bravest animal in all of the savannah!" His ears were held up high "He came back to save the land from his uncle, and we are all here just because of him and mom who went to the unknown lands to fetch him!" And he added "And Timon and Pumba too! They all came back with dad to the Pridelands! You have heard the story already, right?"

Yeah point blank they had.
Though honestly he wasn’t sure how much he could easily explain to the cub. Same with the city. Though he did kind of smirk a bit at the pride bit. He supposed that lions had a huge family most of the time that had their backs whereas things were different with some humans.
“A city’s kind of like a kingdom. Just with lots of buildings, kind of like Pride Rock... But smaller most of the time,” he explained as simplified as he could. He paused a bit. “But I never really had a pride. My dad walked out when I was a baby. Not that it’s a big deal, guy was a jerk anyway.”
Leaning back as he mentioned the whole Scar story he simply nodded along. “I mean he sounds like a brave guy. Honestly, I don’t know if I’d have the guts to stand up to my uncle like he did,” he admitted. “Honestly the literal thought of doing anything like the freaks me out. I don’t think I’ve actually had to have confrontation before.”

Kion looked down, putting things together in his head. A place with many... smaller Priderocks? That was... "Just like the rocky grasslands then?" And his eyes went up to meet the human's. "Walked out?" Kion wasn't sure how to feel about that. He couldn't believe a father would walk off and leave their children with just their mother, especially willingly. How is that even possible? He was sure his dad would never, ever do that... And Kion himself would never do that to his children, he was sure. "That sounds terrible"
"I would. I would put up to my liar uncle who destroyed my kingdom!" And then he quickly added "If I was king" That was a very important part "He'd better be prepared to face my roar!" He said with a slight growl. Kion deeply disliked this man who brought so many tears to the Pridelands. He couldn't believe they were from the same family.
"You... Never?" The lion's interest was renewed. "Not even with other human cubs?" And then, to boast his own importance "I tussle with hyenas daily! It is very important that I know how to defend myself so I can defend others!"

Sam nodded a little.
He supposed it happened a lot with animals but not here. Family seemed pretty important especially to the lions. “It wasn’t that bad. My mom did a lot for me, we were pretty happy,” he explained. “It just made holidays a little awkward. But I guess you don’t really miss what you haven’t had since you were like a baby?”
He could imagine he would. And honestly he’d always kind of imagined that he could do that with his dad one day. But hoping was different than actually doing. “You sound like it probably would be much of a challenge considering you do “tussle” with hyenas everyday,” he explained. “I don’t know I used to rough house with my friends back home sometimes. But I guess I’ve never really thought about getting into an actual fight.”
Of course, Sam was quick to remind himself. “Though it’s looking more and more like I’m gonna have to learn to fight sooner rather than later.”
