Kabili had decided to take the day to hone in on some of what he learned.
And what had he learned? A lot. Some of it he used, and some of it he didn’t. But none the less, humans learned by repetition and he was determined to make sure he kept his mind and new skills sharp. Even if he didn’t necessarily need them twenty-four seven.
So he’d left Pride Rock a little early that morning. And decided to go for a run.
Honestly, his endurance proved to be the hardest thing to keep up with. Being he had been in shape when he left, but also didn’t have so much room to run. Or things to run from back home. All the same he was getting stronger, and faster. Especially when he now only had a lighter breechcloth on his body rather than heavier clothes and a backpack weighing him down.
He’d finally come to a stop by the watering hole that Fuli had shown him a month ago. He’d liked to come here ever since, and usually chose to take a dip inside. Like today. With the sweat dripping down his face he didn’t even hesitate to take a leap inside and let himself cool off.
“Man that must have been a couple miles today,” he muttered to himself. “Morning everyone.” He tried to greet in a friendly manner as the other animals eyed him coming out from the deeper end of the watering hole.
As usual some of the stares felt more like leers. But Bili wasn’t nearly as nervous as he had been when he first arrived and brushed them off.

Fuli was trotting through the grassland, coming to the watering hole for some rehydration after a day of hunting, adventuring and running. She walked up to the edge of the water and took a long, satisfying drink. Hearing a familiar voice, she raised her head and looked around. To her right, she saw a familiar face. Sam! He didn't look any less strange than before, that was for sure. The cheetah got an idea. She slipped away from the edge of the water, and quickly made her way behind the human, careful not to make much noise. She came as close as she dared, about six feet, and stopped. "Hi!" she spoke loudly.

Kabili once again nearly tripped and fell into the water at Fuli’s appearance,
Though it wasn’t a big deal of course - just more proof that he was still in need of working on how to not be so easily snuck up on. All the same, his lips tugged upwards into a smile - after all, Fuli was a friend and not an enemy of any kind so it didn’t really scare him, just startle him.
Getting to his feet he grinned. “Man you still know how to sneak up on a guy,” he told her as he put his hands on his hips. “Taking a break from your morning run too?” He asked.

Fuli sat down next to Sam, wearing a smug grin. She still had it! Just a flick of the claws from there and she could have killed the kid, but she didn't for self-explanatory reasons. He had it hard enough as it was, alone in a strange new place. "You know it. How's everything, Sam? Run into trouble with those lions yet?" she asked.

Haha he could see the pride in her eyes.
And he guessed he’d be a little angry if not for the fact he was getting used to being that way too. It helped that he had about five different family members to teach him now didn’t it? When Fuli sat down however he just gave a smirk at her question.
So word hadn’t reached Fuli yet huh? That surprised him. It had been going around now, but still... “Actually, I’m kinda living with them now,” he chuckled nervously. “In a couple of days I’m supposed to be presented to the Pridelands as the new prince.”
He knew that was probably the least subtle way to put it but still. “A lot changed since I saw you basically,” he admitted honestly with a shrug. “I don’t really know where to begin.”

Fuli listened along, until Sam got to the bit about being prince. Her eyes widened, she stood still as a stone and her jaw hung open. She took a few heartbeats to regain her bearings. "Prince? You? I mean, I'm happy for you, but how did you get them to accept you? Why?" She hardly knew the kid, and had never seen another human before in the Pridelands, and now he was becoming a prince? Unbelievable.

Kabili had to think of the best way to put this.
Honestly, a part of him still wasn’t sure how the last month had happened either. He’d gone from a literal outsider to royalty and he still was trying to get himself out of this jarred position of shock. But still, it had happened and now he had to really explain most of the time.
“We haven’t found the humans yet. And we’re not sure we’re going to,” he said plainly and honestly. “I guess Simba just was reminded of himself? I’m not sure but from the stories I hear it sounded that way.”
Honestly he couldn’t help but share Fuli’s surprise though. It had happened so fast he still was trying to process the whole thing. “He kind of just came to me one night and offered it,” he explained. “I’ve been learning everything I can since. He’s been giving me lessons and stuff. Nala too.”

Fuli looked at Sam for a few seconds, still silent and in utter amazement. After a few more silent moments, the cheetah finally spoke. "I can't believe it." She looked off into the distance for a second. Then back at Sam. "I wonder if I can get adopted, too!" She then broke out laughing, slamming a paw against the ground and falling down, then rolling on the ground laughing. "Seriously, maybe I can show up and they'll go 'hey, she's kinda cute!' And then I get accepted into their pride! Magic!" She continued laughing, her tail waving about up in the air, about at Sam's head height.

Kabili couldn’t help but laugh a little too.
Honestly, it all sounded like a crazy story so he could definitely get where she found it funny. But maybe a little nervous as well because man did people find it funny in general or...? “Yeah I know it’s kind of weird but it’s been working out good at least,” he replied. “I’ve even managed to take down a couple of zebras and gazelles so far. So my hunting is getting better!”
Of course, it helped that he had a couple of lions backing him up, but none the less... “The hard part is getting used to my new name,” he explained. “They call me Kabili now.”

Fuli laughed a little bit more, then snickered a bit and stopped, picking herself back up. "Hunting? Taught by those lionesses? I wouldn't rely on them for advice, they're used to having backup during hunts. Me? I do it all myself!" she announced proudly.
"Kabili?" she asked, smile diminished. "It's got a nice ring to it, but I don't see why you'd want it. Don't you already have a name, Sam?"

Huh, he hadn’t even thought about how it would be to hunt alone. Personally, he didn’t want to imagine that he wanted to hunt alone. But then again he was just a smaller kid. “I mean I could use the back up,” Kabili admitted. “I’m pretty small for my age.”
His teeth clenched when she asked why he wanted to change his name. A part of him wanted to pour all his anger out to her, let his dad have it, but he was also trying to work through his anger. However slowly. So instead he decided to come up with the other reason as an excuse. “I mostly did it because I wanted to fit in. All of the royal family has Swahili names. I figured I should too,” he admitted. “I wear it as a badge of honor you know. Least I try to.”

Fuli snickered. "Because you wanna fit in? Why don't you just turn into a lion, huh? Come on, you can't just give up yourself like that. You're Sam, you can't just ignore that because the almighty lions of Pride Rock took you in," she said, basically speaking sarcasm at this point.
The cheetah went back over to the water and bent over for a drink of water.

Kabili was silent for a moment.
Maybe there wasn’t harm in being honest with Fuli. So far she had been a pretty good friend and he actually liked talking to her. And while he didn’t *have* to tell her the whole story he could say the gist. “It... It’s about more than just that,” he explained. “The name “Sam” holds meaning to it, and not the kind I wanted.”
If he were going to be honest... “I’d actually planned to change it anyway. But I hadn’t figured out how to tell my mom yet,” it was the truth. After all he’d known there was a legal way to do that. “She uh... Didn’t name me but it’s a pretty awkward conversation to have, y’know?”

Fuli snickered, and some water shot out of her mouth. "Yeah, I doubt you'd even be able to find her, let alone talk to her. And even if you did start a conversation, it'd be a short one," she said, standing back up. "But hey, if you want me to call you Kabili? All right, you got it Kabili!"

Find her, right.
He’d almost forgotten he hadn’t broached the subject of where his parents were when he had met Fuli. But he was sure it would make sense when he did explain it anyway. “My... Uh my mom? She died when I got here,” Kabili admitted as he went down to take a drink of water himself. He was getting used to it and was no longer really worried about how he looked. “Kinda why this happened anyway.”
Nodding as she mentioned calling him Kabili if he wanted, he titled his head. “So what are you up to this morning?” He asked. “I just went for a run. Trying to keep my stamina up. I even noticed I’m developing some muscle!”
