Fuli nodded. "Dead mother? Sorry, stuff happens. It's all right, blood family doesn't matter too much anyways. It's animals that matter, not family."
She squinted at Kabili. "Yeah, you seem to have a few more muscles on you. Not bad, Kabili." Fuli poked a claw at his chest, not quite touching his skin with her sharp claw. "But with a torso that small, your lungs are probably too tiny to get a mouse sprinting!" Fuli smirked. "But I can't blame you for not being a cheetah, I guess. You just weren't born to run like I was," she said, all smug from the top of her ears to the tip of her tail. After all, everyone knew cheetahs were the best big cats.
The feline turned about and began walking away from the watering hole. "Come on, I'll give you some tips on running!" she beckoned, looking over her shoulder.

Kabili smiled a little, she did have a good point. He’d never understood what that kind of comment meant until he himself was in this situation. “Yeah, I’m learning that. Slowly anyway.” He admitted honestly his eyes meeting Fuli’s. “Say what you want about the lions but they were really welcoming to me. I think I finally understand what it’s like to have a big family. Even if it’d seem totally insane to adult humans.”
That... Was true. Kabili hadn’t even considered the fact that he still had a lot to develop. But at only about 5’4” he wasn’t much to look at, especially when compared to some kids his age getting as tall as 6 feet, and ripped. “Yeah, you’re right about that. I’m a little small for my age,” he agreed. “I know a kid my age back home who was six foot four.”
Ohhh tips? That was definitely not a bad idea! Especially since more intense exercise like this was new to him. After all, a sports field was much different than a whole Savannah. “Oh I’ll definitely take another lesson from you,” he pointed out. “Trust me I can keep going all day. You just last saw me when I was weak.”
Cocky a little? Maybe. But far be it for him not to be a bit competitive.

Fuli snickered a little. "All right, if you say so!" she called back to him. She walked away from the watering hole, to a large, open, flat plain nearby. "Now, show me how you run," she said, sitting down. "Don't be shy, I'm just gonna give some constructive criticism." She watched Kabili intently. He wasn't so bad last time they met. Compared to an elephant. But now, it was time for the real thing. Sprinting lessons from a cheetah!

Show her how he ran?
He had a feeling she wasn’t expecting a whole lot from him. But on the other hand he also really had been in a weakened state the last time so he was determined to make this work. “Alright, let’s do this,” he said as he began to actually stretch a little and prepare unlike last time. “I mean I’m not as fast as a cheetah. But I played baseball and that required a ton of running.”
He was mostly trying to psych himself up as he could honestly say that he was nervous. But after a deep breath, he took off in a run. And sure he definitely wasn’t the fastest human but he was still pretty speedy for his height and weight class.

Fuli watched as Kabili ran. Two legs, still? Weird. When the boy was done, Fuli zoomed off towards him and skidded to a halt by his side. "Not bad, not bad. But it's time for some constructive criticism. First of all, you're only using two legs. Why? Front legs down, come on! Second, your strides are too short. Really stretch your legs. And third, you have to really dig in your claws for better traction. Try it again." Her tone was encouraging, but it was clear Kabili wasn't quite living up to her expectations.

Obviously, Kabili had to explain a few things.
As much as he'd love to say that he could run on all fours that was just not an option. At least not in a way that couldn't permanently damage his body. But all the same, he did get what she meant about the longer strides. Was that really slowing him down? Tilting his head, he tapped his chin and began to think. "Well I can't really get on all fours. I'll actually move slower," he explained. "It's just how humans are built. We aren't built for that."
That said, he did have a theory. "Maybe if I just got lower to the ground?" he asked. "Or if I took longer strides like you said!"

Fuli tilted her head to the side. Just weren't built for it? Humans were so weird sometimes. Well, he certainly wasn't, that was for sure. "Okay, well, just try longer strides I guess," she suggested. "And try breathing faster. It helps a lot."

Kabili nodded a little.
He took a deep breath again, attempting to find his center as he went down on all fours. Sure he couldn’t run like that, but he could at least try it as a stance anyway, right? “Alright, longer strides. Faster breaths.” He gave a thumbs up. “Got it.”
With a deep exhale, he sprinted. This time attempting to use some of Fuli’s suggestions, though it wasn’t easy. As running in a more structured way never actually seemed super easy. But he did notice that she was right and he was picking up the pace. “Damn. I never thought I could run that fast.” He managed as he slid to a stop and caught his breath again.

"Me neither! Well..." Fuli ran right up to Kabili again in less than half the time it took him to cover the distance. "You're certainly getting better. Good! I, umm," She looked down at Kabili's legs. "I'm not exactly sure what to do from here. I run with all my legs, as you just saw. But you balance on one at a time when running. You don't have a tail, and your claws don't look very useful." She tilted her head at the boy. "How do you humans even survive? I mean, I get that you have sticks and stuff to help you, but I don't think that helps all that much. The slowest gazelles I've ever seen could outrun you in a heartbeat."

Kabili listened to what she had to say.
All of her words were good points about a human being when compared with other animals. Honestly it made him feel a little useless but at the same time he knew that wasn’t all together true as he crossed his arms. Listening to her observations intently.
Wait, the slowest Gazelle? Was she kidding? Kabili looked a little offended but not too much so. “Hey! We’re not that inept! I told you I killed a zebra right?” He asked. Maybe a little defensively but still. “But...”
Honestly the way they’d survived.... Not the best. And with the invention of the nuke he kinda questioned it more every day. “Though I don’t really know how we survived either,” he admitted. “We seem to try to destroy ourselves all the time.”

She sat down again next to Kabili. "Took down a zebra? All right, I guess that's something. But you're still really slow."
Fuli was now even more confused. "Destroy yourselves? I've only ever met one human, which is you, but humans sound super confusing!"

True. He couldn’t deny he was really slow. Humans didn’t run nearly as fast as most wild animals and he had to accept defeat on that one. Though maybe the more he worked at it the more he could find his strengths. “I guess maybe I just need to figure out *my* strengths,” he said. “Even if they’re not speed.”
The boy was silent for a few moments after she said that. “We are complicated, I don’t understand a lot of what the adults do,” he admitted very honestly. “I think if it weren’t for the good people of us we’d have died out years ago... We try to destroy each other over the dumbest stuff.”
He was silent again then. “My family doesn’t know it... But there’s a reason I’m not our biggest fan, humans I mean,” he looked at her. “That Hitler guy I was telling you about. One of the races... The main race he was trying to exterminate... That was mine. He killed thousands of us... Slaughtered us. Yet we’re still standing and it amazes me.”

Fuli whistled. "Now that's harsh. Hey, if you wanna know what I think? The fact that you lived through all that just means you're stronger now! I mean, I don't think I've ever met someone who survived a total genocide. And there's a certain charm to that, isn't there?" She sighed. "Man, humans are sadistic. Lions aren't too fond of us cheetahs, and even they don't actively seek out our destruction. And you humans are the same species and even worse? It makes you wonder why the other predators haven't gotten to them yet."

That... Was definitely true.
Kabili had been lucky that he was born in America. His family had been specifically from Germany but immigrated long before he was born - so in another life... If his family hadn’t left a generation before. “It definitely has made me tougher in some ways,” he agreed. “I was lucky, though. My family left the country where the main genocide took place. I think it was my grandfather who moved ‘em, just before mom was born.”
It was an honest to god good point Fuli made though. And he’d never understood why humans were so awful to each other. “I don’t understand it either. A lot of it are the adults,” he admitted. “They seem to have just as much hate as they do good in their hearts. And it’s not a good thing...”
He then added. “But the good news is. Hitler’s dead. And my people have started to rebuild,” he explained honestly. “I just hope nothing like it ever happens again. Maybe we finally learned our lesson.”
