Sam was a little nervous.
Ha! Imagine that a few months ago, him nervous that Simba and Nala were leaving? At the beginning of all of this, he was pretty sure that he and Simba would be glad to be rid of each other for some point. But admittedly, along with being slightly jealous of them going to the Tree, he was going to miss them both…
It was a crazy, upside down life he was living, eh?
These things swirled in his head when he woke up that morning. He’d taken to sleeping close to his family now, though it had taken some getting used to. But as usual he was probably the last one to wake up, not at all an early bird and not quite given too many responsibilities yet.
So he’d stepped outside of the den and stretched. Taking a look over the Savannah with a deep breath. “I wonder what the others are up to today?” Thinking over whether to join his friends in the Pride or fly solo that day.

This morning Simba woke up earlier than usual. The decision was already made that he and Nala were going to go to the Tree of Life to seek for answers, but before they would do so preparations were needed to be done. He had a long talk with Kiara after the Announcement some days ago and they discussed everything they could. Simba had faith in his daughter as he knew Kiara took her responsibility seriously and she could be trusted - along with Kovu.
The morning was a bit pinching today as if it sensed something was already going on and something was going to change. Simba sat on the edge of the Peak, scanning the land with his eyes lost in his thoughts.

Sam was surprised to find Simba up that early.
Was it weird that even now that he was his dad, he still worried about approaching him sometimes? Of course he slept with the rest of Simba’s family now and knew that he could come to him and Nala for anything… But it just was still nervous. A part of him still felt like the scared and alone kid who’d first come here that Simba had wanted nothing to do with.
Now though, he looked at Simba with nothing but respect and admiration, he wasn’t something to fear but someone to seek comfort and companionship with.
This was ALL so new to him that it made him nervous. But he reminded himself for the millionth time. He belonged here, Simba hadn’t just made that official, he’d made it official by calling him his son and that meant he needed to sooner or later push those fears away.
So he approached the peak of Pride Walk and sat himself down too. “Morning dad,” He still wasn’t sure if he should be calling him that or Father, but he’d go with that until he got corrected he guessed. “You’re up early.”

"Good morning, Sam." He looked at the boy with smiling face. It was still a little bit weird that he called him father (just like Bunga calling him brother first was weird as well) but he started to get used to it. It was Nala's idea, but he didn't mind tho. Simba began to see in him what his father had already seen since the very beginning and he believed it was the Great Kings's will. "You know, me and Nala have a looong way to go, so we need preparations and this is why I am up this early. I want everything to be in its place before we leave. But what about you? Why are you up?"

Oh right, he guessed that made sense.
Though when Simba asked what he was doing up so early, he contemplated if he should actually answer. Sam hadn’t been open about his nightmares - thankfully he hadn’t had any night terrors since he’d joined the family. So he supposed there was still time before he had to talk about it.
So he thought about how he could answer him while keeping it as vague as possible.
“Oh I uh, y’know… Kind of restless. There’s been so much going on, I guess my brain is in a lot of places,” Sam admitted. At least that was also true and not something he just made up to avoid the question. “I guess I’m a little worried about you guys being gone too. I know Kiara’s got most of the responsibility. But now I’m in the mix too… Zazu’s been telling me I have to take more of it too and all of that.”
Zazu was a pain in the ass in general, he thought. But, he did want to make one thing clear… “Not that I didn’t think being a prince was going to be more responsibility. Believe me, I knew,” He chuckled nervously. “I guess I’m just worried about falling flat on my face…? I don’t know.”
Fears that had triggered memories of how his mom had spat in his face, called him worthless… Among other things. But that was a bridge they could cross later.

"I was worried about being a king first too." Simba smiled, thinking that sharing his fear would give Sam some reassurrance. "But I am sure you will get used to it." He chuckled. "My father wouldn't believe in you in vain."
The lion then turned his look towards the rising sun, letting his eyes fix on the horizon again. The land illuminated by the sun offered a beautiful view that Simba could never get enough of. This sight always reminded him of his father and him as cub when he had been taught about the Circle of Life. The sun had rised with him as the new king indeed and one day it would rise with Kiara.
"Everything the light touches is our kingdom." Simba spoke finally, breaking the silence. "And everything you see exists together in a delicate balance. The Circle of Life moves it all and everyone has its own place in it like mine is to be king. Now that you are part of the family you also need to take your place in it as Prince of the Pride Lands. The kingdom needs a good diplomat, the person who represents it when the king or queen can't be there. According to tradition, the third cub gets this role. Kiara and Kion have already found their place, now it's your turn." The male smiled again. This request testified to his trust in the boy.

Simba? Nervous?
Then again, Sam had only known Simba well into his time as king, he guessed. But the thought that the lion who always seemed so confident, and prepared would be so nervous? That was a bit hard for him to believe - even if he hadn’t known him back then. “You? Nervous. But you always seem so confident!” Sam asked, surprised. “I can’t imagine you like that anyway…”
Our kingdom….
The words rang through his ears as Simba said them. Another thing he had to get used to. But Simba had more to say, he figured out… Diplomat? On one hand he felt his stomach tighten, but on the other he also knew that it wasn’t… Terrible. In fact, it felt like something he’d be good at - considering his experience with multiple animals on the Savannah before and after he’d arrived.
“A diplomat… Wow, that’s different… But I mean it sounds awesome. Like I’d get to see everything, travel around. I’ve always said I wanted to see it all,” He found himself surprised he answered. “I… Promise I won’t let you down, father.” Alright, there it had felt right to be more formal. Maybe he could get used to this after all.
After a moment, he added. “I guess I should start working on my manners.” He joked.

"In this role you sure will see it all. A diplomat travels a lot." Sad fact that meant Sam wouldn't have as much free time as before, and would spend less time in the Pridelands with the family than before. Altough, Simba considered the boy as a full-fledged family member and had faith in him he could do it. "And as a new Diplomat of the Pridelands, I am already entrusting you with a task. Can you see those mountains?" The lion had his nose pointed in the right direction, giving Sam some time to find it with his eyes. "Those are the Theluji Mountains, home of the gorilla king, Sokwe, and his two sons Majinuni and Hafifu. King Sokwe used to be at war with Scar when he was king, and his kingdom suffered a lot. He was about to attack the Pridelands to overthrow Scar's regime, but in the meantime I became king and I could earn his trust, and in the end we became allies. Every year since then he sends me a message to let me know if he still agrees to the peace treaty between our kingdoms. I need you to bring me that message."

The gorilla king?
That was certainly something he wasn’t expecting. Both that the gorilla’s had a king, and there were other kingdoms! Honestly, Sam had a feeling since he’d heard of The Tree of Life but confirmation actually made him a little excited, if not a little nervous.
All the same, he steeled his nerves and listened to his father’s instructions.
When Simba was done, he bowed his head and nodded before replying. “I promise that I’ll do it and make you proud,” Sam replied. “… I never got to properly thank you, everything happened so fast. But I know you took a big chance adopting me as your own… I don’t even think there’s a way to really thank you in words for giving me what my own kind never did.”
He then added with a pat on his chest. “But I promise for the rest of my life to represent you in a way that makes you proud.”

"I am sure you will do your best." Simba nodded and smiled, then continued, "You know, somewhere deep inside I feel that adopting you was the right thing to do. My father once told me that family and love were not always of blood. He was right, this is what I experience with Timon and Pumbaa every day. Adopting others into the royal family was once tradition in the Pride Lands and I believe that the Great Kings will appreciate it if we follow the old tradition. They even may give us the answers we so need at the Tree of Life. I really hope it." As he uttered the last words the king turned his look towards the sky, the soft wind messing up his mane a little bit.

Sam listened to Simba with surprise.
He had taught him that? It was almost a wonder… Was Sam really an accident? On one hand he’d always assumed he was - his parents hadn’t wanted him. But what if it was all getting him here? It was… A thought. After all, all of this started to shake up when Simba had formally adopted him.
But, that could wait. It was maybe wishful thinking on his part he supposed. Either way he leaned against Simba carefully, a smile on his face. “I’m glad your - our people were always like that,” he was silent for a moment. “Ever since I got here I felt like… I don’t know I was always supposed to be here… Like I came late, but this is right…”
Maybe it was possible. Had it just been coincidence, or was he always meant to be their son? Just when it was the right time - and not a second sooner. “I guess the only thing I wish is I’d started here. I would have been much better off, y’know,” he admitted. “Though David used to say I wouldn’t be me if I didn’t go through it all…”
