SARABI "Maybe to you it seems boring." She lightly joked. Still, she saw the reasoning in his words, and her lips twisted in amusement. Her paw swat at the water, splashing at him. "On second thought, that does sound boring." She'd leap away from the water's edge with a short laugh. "Not everyone values individuality, but I do." No two watering holes were alike, right?
Where else might be something he'd enjoy... The baobab trees were better in the daytime, she felt, and the marshy groves weren't very interesting. "If you're feeling adventurous... There are also some rises we can see into the Outlands from. It's much further out so it'd be better to find somewhere next and go there after."

Giggling a little at the splash he shrugged.
He could imagine that she had a point there. It was probably to them what it was like for him coming here and seeing all of this, even if that seemed odd to him. “I mean if it helps we have a lot of them in common. Like cats and dogs,” he splashed back with a smirk. “But they’re smaller… Like teeny tiny. Well some of them anyway. But I can tell you none of them grow to be your size.”
He decided to leave the domesticating part out.
Tapping his chin, he thought about it, he’d heard the Outlands were dangerous…. BUT that never stopped him with anything before had it? “Oh I’m so game for the Outlands,” he explained. “I hear they have an Elephant Graveyard. That sounds kind of cool.”

SARABI "Teeny-tiny?" Of course she imagined small lions or small African Wild Dogs. It was a little funny if she had to admit it. "They sound like they might actually listen to Zazu." He was like family to her, of course, but he wasn't... intimidating in the least and everyone knew it.
At the mention of the elephant graveyard, she looked at him sternly, tail flicking. "And you'd best stay away from it. It's a dangerous place. We can see if it's visible from here, but nothing good lives there now." She'd hold her gaze a moment before breaking it off and shaking her head. "I'm sorry. Simba once put himself and Nala in danger there as cubs."
"Here, this way." The lioness began walking along another trail, coming towards an overlook.

Listen? To Zazu? Never!
Heck, Sam hadn't met Zazu yet, but he did hear enough to know that the guy probably would never be listened to. After all, he sounded uptight, annoying, and pesky. But all the same, he wouldn't insult the Majordodo, at least not in front of one of the royal family. "Well... Maybe if he's lucky anyway," He replied. "Some can still be as big as a cub."
When she mentioned the Elephant Graveyard as being dangerous, however, he looked puzzled. What was so dangerous about something like that? He thought about how to best word the question as he followed Sarabi. "What's wrong with the Elephant Graveyard? I mean, I get the danger thing, but who lives there?" He asked honestly. "Is it like filled with tigers or something?"

SARABI "Hyenas." She kept a low profile as she walked up the overlook and sat. Out in the distance, the towering bones of elephants that had long since returned to the land jutted up like thorny bramble. Even with the way much of the Graveyard sat low, like a crater in the earth, many of the skeletons were massive enough to rise above. "And Outlanders or rogues, but the hyenas are the worst of them now. They hunt in large groups and know their land far more than we do. We built a trust with some, but many still distrust us after Scar's actions."
Through her seriousness, she'd press her belly to the grass and lay, head lifting. "Why do you think a graveyard like this exists?" In the moonlight, it looked haunting. Flares of light here and there from the steam vents only added to it all, like lost embers.

Hyenas? Yeah, he guessed that did make sense.
As he followed the former queen up to the overlook, he was surprised to find that the Elephant Graveyard... Was a lot more unnerving than he had been expecting. It was dark, and ominous. He crouched low onto his knee. Listening carefully to what the elderly lion had to say. He shuddered a little, and then thought on her last question. Why did something like this exist? What had caused it?
Something told Sam that it wasn't a pleasant story.
"I don't know why something like this would exist. If I'm being honest. In all my travels I've never seen anything like it," He admitted honestly. He wondered if there was a time where David had, or if he would have been just as stumped. "Why do the hyenas even live here?"

SARABI "I've always wondered why the Graveyard exists, too." In her days, nobody knew, only carrying stories that varied. "They say elephants don't forget. They visit their ancestors' resting places and, I think to some, might choose to join them when the time comes. Why here, I don't know." It's a sobering thought, as she'd think such a place should be lush with life... But this was not. Maybe an old wrong was done to bring this?
She nodded toward the pit. "They didn't respect the Circle of Life when I was young and were chased out. We didn't go further than this, so we declared this our boundary. They stayed close, sneaking in at any chance to eat when the herds would steer clear of the Outlands." She didn't mention the tentative allies out of personal bias. Her trust was not so easily won with them.

Sam listened carefully as she spoke.
He had been about to reply about his own thoughts when a twig snapping grabbed his attention. He spun around, blue eyes narrowed and going for his small knife he still kept attached to his waist. ”Or maybe we just like it, eh?” A smooth voice spoke up as three hyenas made themselves known.
Sam’s eyes narrowed as the other sniffed the air. ”Y’know it’s not very nice to spy! Even if it’s from your own territory.”
The teen, instead of showing fear took a few steps forward. Was he with a lionness? Sure. But Sarabi was older and he knew if it came to a fight he’d need to at least help. “I think that makes you the spies actually,” Sam replied showing his knife and attempting to keep his cool. “We don’t want trouble, OK? If you leave now maybe I won’t tell the king.”
The laughter between the three made Sam waver a bit. He’d been in his fair share of fights before. But three hyenas? That was new. ”And what are you gonna do about it, monkey?” the leader snarled. ”You got an elder and… Whatever that thing is. You look more like a late night snack to me.”
Sam looked pointedly over to Sarabi, a hitch in his breath. He wondered if she might have any ideas before he decided to play the hothead and fight a trio of beasts.

SARABI Her throat rumbled in a growl as she rose to her feet, head high. "I wasn't under the impression that a history lesson counted as 'spying'." She kept her dignity, though her chest tightened knowing Sam was in danger. She could handle this, albeit with difficulty, but him? Of course... she wasn't considering herself as carefully as she should.
She stepped forward, coming beside Sam rather than in front. It wouldn't do him favors to treat him as weak, like this. "You don't get to my age without learning how to fight." Staring them down while purposely keeping the bridge of her nose high, she made it obvious she looked down on them. "Leave. You're not welcome here."

Sam eyed Sarabi carefully.
While he commended her for being strong enough to fight at her age. But on the other hand, he felt a duty to protect her. Elderly, or not. She had been kind to him, their whole family had been. And if it came down to it, he'd defend any of them. Something that was new to him - a sense of true loyalty. "Not welcome!?" The leader snapped. "As for a fight... Well, I don't see no grandma as a challenge, that's for sure."
Sam saw the leader boldly pounce for Sarabi.
In what could have been an act of bravery - or stupidity. Sam lunged right back, and met the hyena as he came down. Taking a swipe of his knife and slashing the belly of the beast. The hyena howled, and fell onto all fours. Staring at the boy, he snarled. "Fine shrimp. If you're so eager to go first, let's dance."
As he leapt for Sam, the boy braced himself. The animal colliding with him as they both rolled. Sam was not anticipating the Hyena to meet his challenge either. But it was clear his bold move had startled his friends. Who didn't look like they'd been anticipating a counterattack.
Sam, however, was no pushover. Instead of going down, he used his knife again. Stabbing it into the hyena's side. Another howl as the boy rolled out from under it. The animal looked shocked - staring at him. "Hurts, doesn't it?" Sam asked with a cockier tone. "C'mon, dog. You wanna feel that again?"
Sam bared his teeth, and prepared for his next move. Heaving as he did.

SARABI She could feel the fire in Sam as they stood as one. She expected to feel teeth and fangs sinking in, preparing to rise on her haunches to grapple, but the mancub swept in fast and threw off the hyena, distracting it. Knives were not something she understood, but tools were; it bit into the animal's flesh like a tooth, gleaming in the moonlight.
Her eyes focused on the remaining two hyenas, both of them cackling and snarling. Their attention was briefly on Sam, preparing to encircle him, so she rammed her shoulder into one and slapped a paw at the other, forcing them to back up so her back could stay with the boy's. No words came, only a puffed roar, both as a warning and as a verbalization of her anger at them for attacking. It was nothing like the King's roar, so what fear it might have brought fell into more giggles from the opposing hyenas.
"Two on one? Ohhh, granny, granny, don't say it isn't so!" The beast snapped at her legs while the other went for her side, pulling fur where their jaws grazed her. Her teeth came quick and sharp at the one in front of her, rending their ear into strips and earning a yowl from them.

For some reason Simba woke up and couldn't continue his sleep, his thoughts just kept rushing in his mind. He opened his eyes, unintentionally glanced at his mother's sleeping spot and surprisingly found that it was empty. The lion narrowed his eyes to get a better view in the dark den, but no, it was not a mirage, Sarabi had been missing. "Mother...?" Simba whispered to himself, his stomach getting nervous. Why did she want to sneak out during the night? He got bad feelings about it... The lion rose to his feet and with hurried steps he left the cave to go after the lioness.
The more and more time had passed, the more desperate Simba became that hadn't found her yet. Suddenly hyenas' laughter broke the silence. The lion stopped to prick up his ears to identify the source it could have come from: the sound seemed to come from the direction of the Elephant Graveyard. Simba immediatelly made his way to go there to find out what was going on. As he got closer, he could see Sam fighting one of the hyneas, the other two attacking his beloved mother. Anger raised in his heart as he realized the situation, making his steps even faster to protect them.
"Raaaaaawr!" Came the strong roar of the King - sounded like Mufasa's when once saved him and Nala - as he joined the fight. The pause he gained by the roar was enough to distract the scavengers from the battle, giving Simba time to act quickly. He pounced on the hyenas to remove them from his mother, then from Sam until they were cringing under him. "If you ever come near them again..." The King growled, his voice sounded just like his father's once. Once he had been a helpless cub in the Elephant Graveyard needing protection, but now he was the one who protected others.
"Leave this land! NOW!"

Sam jumped out of his skin.
He’d never heard an adult lion roar like that, so to hear it was quite the thing to behold. The next thing he knew Simba had thrown the hyena off of him, and that was… Not what he was expecting. A part of him wanted to keep fighting, but the other knew better. Simba intervening was probably for the best.
Immediately, he had run over to Sarabi’s side, more worried for the older lionness than himself. He had some scratches, but at the end of the day he would live. “Sarabi, are you OK?” He asked. Not having noticed how her fight had gone. “Anything I need to check on?”
The leader of the hyenas, however, actually did look worse for the wear having greatly underestimated the kids tenacity. ”That thing you brought here almost killed me!” he snarled. ”It should be put down before it can hurt others!”
Sam shook his head, definitely not taking it sitting down. And already noticing the other two at least knew when to shut up. “You attacked Sarabi, unprovoked! You think I’m just gonna sit by and watch?” Sam replied. “I’d do it again for anybody in the Pride.”
The hyena did give a look of fear at his lack of fear - staring between both him and Simba and not quite sure what to make of it. ”She was fair game. It’s not your place to put that deformed snout where it doesn’t belong!”

SARABI Simba's roar always took her breath away. It was familiar enough now that she wouldn't make the mistake of believing it to be Mufasa's, but the sound was very much the same, power sending everyone to a halt as he leaped in and wrangled the trio together. She stayed on guard, hackles raised, until Sam's question gathered her attention. "Yes, I'm fine." She wasn't going to assess herself just yet, in front of these trespassers. Her side was scratched though barely bleeding, and her joints hurt more than anything else.
Straightening up, she looked at them with disdain. "And so are you, right now." Her quip was toward the leader, referring to fair game. "I was giving Sam a brief history lesson in the Pridelands." This was to explain to Simba what was going on and to reaffirm that the hyenas had no right to be upset for this.
