Makucha narrowed his eyes to spot the tree she was looking at. "Sure." he said, "And the name's Makucha." he added, "We both are smart enough to use our names right?" he scoffed. "Ready set go!" he said immediately after, talking fast and going at a full sprint. It would be so juicy to beat her in the first round, he couldn't dare hold back! He would get up to his full speed, which is at most half hers, about half-way there!

As Makucha blazed ahead, Fuli held back for three seconds or so, watching the leopard sprint off into the distance. Then, in a flash, she burst forth, getting up to an insane speed and passing Makucha at the halfway mark. She slowed down just enough so that Makucha could keep up. "The only thing you'll be eating today is dust!" she quipped, before accelerating once again.

Makucha snarled as he was passed, even at full sprint. He noticed her slow down, and snarled. A claw went up to swipe at air, quite intentionally, slowing him down even further. "Stupid cheetah." he groaned, "Definitely arrogant and proud of it." he said to himself. He slowed down after it was clear he lost, and met her at the tree. "Fine, you proved you are faster than me." he growled, "But speed isn't everything, cheetah!"

Fuli sat triumphantly at the foot of her tree, expression smug and ego heavily inflated. "Yeah, I guess you're right, Makucha," she said, getting up. She walked closer slowly. "I can track animals by scent alone. I can hide in the grass so perfectly I'm almost invisible. I can see directly into bright sun glare." She stood directly in front of Makucha and looked him in the eyes, with a smug smile and lowered eyebrows. "And I can jump almost high enough to pull your head out of the clouds. But come on, no one can jump that high."

The leopard leered, "Great, you're so amazing." he said sarcastically, but that was exactly what he really wanted out of her. "Why don't we test your tracking skills, huh?" he grinned. "Simple challenge, really..." he said, "Just find every tree I've marked." he laughed "So you can know my territory when I kick you out of it."

Fuli raised an eyebrow, then laughed. "Challenge? Hah! Isn't the whole point of a scent marker to be noticed? You're on!" Without hesitation, she sprinted back the way they'd come just a few dozen feet, then sniffed the air a bit. Making sure to ignore the scent from Makucha himself, she jogged around a bit, then caught another Makucha scent coming from another direction. This is gonna be easier than outrunning a crocodile on land, she thought, jogging that way confidently.

The leopard grinned, keeping distance enough from her she wouldn't smell him as well, but also to watch her work. "Doing good... heh. This cheetah sure was impressive, but she would eventually find something odd about his scent markers. Was he admitting defeat? No, he simply had enough information, and now he was making a point.
He ran ahead of her, directly between three trees, to see how she followed the trail, and to follow her given she chooses correctly.

Fuli, sniffing the air, tracked the scent back to a trio of trees all clustered together. Looking behind her, she caught a glimpse of Makucha, keeping a considerate distance. How nice of him. Fuli sniffed the air some more, and found the scent seeming to come from no particular tree. She picked randomly, and went over to the tree on the right. Giving it a quick whiff, she found the appropriate scent and left a scratch in the dirt to remind herself of this one tree's marker later on. She then sniffed the air again. There was something off. Nothing in particular was worthy of further investigation yet, but her gut was telling her something was definitely wrong.

Makucha chuckled, "Something wrong?" he wasn't sure if she had caught on yet, but he came closer. "You don't seem so excited to be right about every tree..." he hinted. He did want to have his little game over before his friends came by, he wasn't quite ready to explain things to them yet... and he didn't want any crazy accusations about his deeds to be heard.

Fuli spent some time going from tree to tree, following the scent to marker after marker and making scratches in the dirt to denote her findings. But after a while, she began to grow increasingly wary of the situation. She found herself surrounded by more and more of the same scent, and it usually came from markers she already found. So she went about marking tree after tree after tree... Fuli turned around to face Makucha. "Hey, how many of these things did you place?" she asked, slightly irate. "How do I know I found them all?"

Makucha laughed. "Haha, haha..." he looked around at the scattered trees all around them both, "I won't make you spend all day running around my territory." he said, slowly building up to the explanation. "I've been at this for like... a month?" he hrmed, "Most leopards are lazy. It's what makes me so great. The name's Makucha..." he said, "And I intend on controlling everything." he said
"You officially have my permission to pass through it, though." he said, giving his earlier bold wager a different meaning.

Fuli dashed right up into Makucha's face, skidding to a halt just short of an impact. "I knew it. How obsessive are you, that you'd spend a whole month marking your precious territory? I'm glad I agreed to this, otherwise I'd have to fight you every time I try to take a walk around here." The cheetah rolled her eyes. "Nice meeting you, Makucha. I hope this day serves you as definitive proof that cheetahs are better than leopards. I hope I see you again-so I can rub it in more," she said with a snarky grin. "Huwezi!" she shouted, sprinting off into the distance. It was time to explore the Backlands, a whole new exciting place to see and discover. And it had leopards in it. Leopards that Fuli was intent on showing up, insulting and challenging at every possible chance. Because cheetahs. Were. Better. Than. Leopards. And there was a new cheetah in the area, as of that day.

Makucha chuckled, "I wouldn't have minded that." he said, she left him defeated, yet very pleased. He knew her arrogance and shortsightedness well, her strengths, and she would happily run around all alone in his territory, far from any help should he send his leap at her. This was a good "loss" for sure. He didn't fret about losing pride, he was all about greed. He just hoped she stayed reckless and alone. "I wonder if she'll do the work of making herself our enemy." he mused, and headed for his tree proper to rest.
