Sam was getting a little braver.
Once he’d gotten past the initial bareness of his new look, appearing like he did didn’t bother him. And though he wasn’t very strong as a hunter yet, he did find himself getting better. Adapting. Even getting stronger. Though it was a slow process adapting wasn’t ending up as hard as he thought it would be.
Today, he’d decided to put his skills to some test.
He’s mostly accompanied Nala on hunts but today he was on his own. Careful to make sure he was keeping a keen eye and not break territory. God knew they’d warned him at least a dozen or so times how dangerous it was. So far he wasn’t doing terrible. But he hadn’t managed to catch anything.
“C’mom Sam, you see the girls do this a thousand times,” Sam muttered to himself puffing his chest a little bit. “You can do this...”
He kept low to the grass as he watched his next try, a smaller adult wildabeast nearby eagerly. Since those happened to actually taste pretty good, or so he’d found.

"Hey there, little boy."
The few words of Vitani seeped with intrigued malice as she watched from her place behind a boulder. Her eyes glittered with warm sunlight hardly ever seen in the Outlands as the next trill of words were rumbled. "Hmm. How curious. I wonder what a little humanoid boy is doing out here alone...?" A slight planned tilt of the head as she paused to investigate his each and every features. Ugh, gross. He was like a living, breathing walking Pridelands-smellin' stench.
Aside from being stupid, it seemed Simba was also just plain smelly. And, as expected of course, the odor carried on with his children. It was so bad in fact it lived on in the humans of his. Vitani couldn't believe it. Zira had never warned the Pridelands people would smell this bad.

Sam groaned as the voice spooked the wildabeast.
Who the heck had just spoken anyway? Sam had stopped being jumpy, at least for the moment. Now that he was armed he didn’t have to be as worried about predators. So he simply stood to his feet and turned to face the lioness.
He had never seen Vitani before. But he also knew not to jump to conclusions, given there were a couple of kingdoms out here and a couple of prides as he figured. “Hunting, actually,” he told her matter-of-factly. “I was hoping to bring back a little something on my own to impress the Pride. I’ve been learning.”
He tilted his head a bit, sure to watch her closely and keep a grip on his spear. Who knew if this was friend or foe anyway. “Sorry, did you already have your eye on that one?” He asked calmly. He wouldn’t want to show he was at all nervous.

The lioness barked a hoarse laugh, struggling as to not fall back in the midst of her hysteria. "Oh! Heh. Pfft. I don't mean to laugh, really... But, kiddo, you're wasting your breath on this one." Finally regaining her composure, Vitani let her physique plop back upon her haunches before continuing. "Simba won't care what you catch. You could take down an elephant with that tiny thing." She nodded toward the sphere in his palms. "He wouldn't care... But anyway.... Lest we steer too far away from your questions, eh?"
The tip of the lioness' tail flicked. "Couldn't care less about that wildebeest... Only purpose it would have served me anyway is a good bloodfest as it woulda rammed you with those horns...." Her voice trailed away with those last few words. She had to admit, she wasn't looking to scare the kid too harshly.

Take down an elephant? Sam looked over the Speer a little as he shook his head. That went along the lines of what Simba had explained to him about the Circle of Life. “That’s... Not in our diet though. And I don’t kill for sport unlike some of my kind,” Sam explained honestly. His voice a little shaky. Not sure what others may have seen from the humans still out there. “He’s been teaching me about the circle of life thing... We only kill what we need to eat, which is fine by me.”
Speared him with his horns? That one was a laugh. In fact, Sam did laugh a little. “I think I’m ready to strike back. Don’t get me wrong. Their horns are intimidating, but I think I kind of no one what I’m doing,” he then added. “I’m Sam by the way, what’s your name?”

The skin above Vitani's eyes furrowed a tad and she hissed a scoffing laugh through clenched teeth. "PFFT. The Circle of Life. I'll give your father this, kid -- he sure knows how to trigger a good laugh outta some. The Circle of Life or whatever is pathetic." This was just a matter of opinion, though, and quite truthfully Vitani wasn't looking to poise it as anything else. But man, was Simba a real joker. A rather stupid one overall at that. And that was a fact.
"I'm Vitani, daughter of Zira and technically of Scar." Her chest puffed out a little. He may be dead, but Vitani was still proud to call Scar her non-biological dad. He was far better than Simba, if you were to ask the bedraggled lioness.

Sam paused.
Had word already reached the Outlands that he was being trained to be adopted into ten royal family? Man he couldn’t imagine that Zira was happy with that, especially with all that he’d heard about her. Now was she? “Where did you get the idea he was my father?” He tried to keep it vague. Knowing Simba probably wouldn’t like word being out, so he tried to keep it that way. “Maybe I’m still just the kid he picked up from the jungle.,,”
Well, if he was he supposed he wouldn’t look as nervous as he did right now. He knew that Simba had made one thing clear, to all his kids for that matter: the Outlanders were to be avoided at all costs. But while she wasn’t being hostile, he supposed there wasn’t harm in being neutral too.
“I mean, I wouldn’t have believed you were Zira’s or his until you said that so I’m kinda surprised,” Sam relied honestly. Though he also had to admit. “Not that it’s a bad thing. Your mom was just more hostile. But I mean no one’s seen anything like me before. So there’s that.”
He then added. “You knew who I was though - so how long were you behind that rock?” He surmised.

Vitani shrugged a broad set of shoulders, expression just the slightest bit smug but otherwise unreadable. "Kiddo, does it even matter?" she prompted, jaws expanding on a noisy, partially deliberate yawn. "For all you know i could have been there, just sitting and waiting, for an hour or more."
The lioness then motioned with a paw at her whiskers, smoothing them down quickly before continuing. "What, did you not think word had spread by now those foul Stenchlanders had taken you in?"

Sam shrugged, fair enough.
Though he did find it funny she called him kiddo, the way they talked. It seemed they were probably the same age in mentality. “You know you sound around my age. So I don’t think I’m exactly a “kiddo”,” he snorted. “But as long as you aren’t here for a fight I’ll let it go.”
His jaw set. So word had gotten around. He guessed it was hard not to, what with him sleeping with the Pride now. But he definitely wasn’t expecting it so soon. “It’s not. It’s just taking some getting used to. Where I’m from I was dirt poor. Didn’t have much for food or family,” he admitted. “I guess it’s just taking some adjusting getting used to being the son of a king and all. Let alone people knowing it.”
