Even without hearing Simba promise Sam that they would find the other humans of the boy's group, Nala was on board with this mission and had even been taking steps that very morning towards it, patrolling the Pride Lands and as near the Outlands as she dared, searching. She didn't wish to actually get into a confrontation with Zira, and enforced the other side of the lioness' ban from the Pride Lands by not stepping into the Outlands without dire need.
Nala most times exceeded at not showing disappointment too much or at least not of the kind that would make the Pride Landers and those at Pride Rock doubt the capabilities of their Queen. Of course Simba could always tell, just as she could often read what was going on with him whether he said it or not, but even a passing Giraffe might have seen how the queen's head was held a bit lower than normal as she returned to Pride Rock, though she quickly hid even this much of what she was feeling.
She hadn't found any trace of any of the other humans, and with as much as she had come to care for Sam in their looking after him, she felt she had personally let the boy down.
Not above socializing with all ranks of Pride Landers, Nala chose this day to lay on one of the rocks a bit below Pride Rock, and within easy reach of any who might wish to speak with her as she gazed out, a bit lost in thought.

Try not to look at the awkward stares. Try not to look at the awkward stares.
Sam really didn’t know what to think at the moment. Because he was still trying to process what had just happened. Should he be thrilled or literally terrified that he was in the family of a king now? He didn’t honestly know. But he knew that everywhere he walked in this place now people were gawking like he grew a second head.
Honestly, it wasn’t like he minded it. More like his mind was swimming trying to figure out his new role now. Or that fact his family had lost a member and grown en-mass in a very short amount of time.
He’d decided to go for a swim earlier that morning to gather some of his thoughts before returning to Pride Rock. When the next awkward situation turned its head. Of course he’d met Nala, he’d pretty much met most of the lions and lionesses by this point. But where before she had been a new friend things were different now...
Chewing the bottom of his lip he decided he would just try to make them as least awkward as possible. “Good morning your majesty,” he greeted like he always would. Stretching a little. “Beautiful day huh?”

Nala heard the approach before Sam probably even knew she knew he was there. She purposefully didn't react at first, and so as to not startle the boy, waiting to see what he would do and if he even wished to talk. She knew of course eventually they would have to talk, and if Simba and herself were taking the boy in, but she wouldn't push it.
Sam made the first move, coming closer and saying a pretty standard thing upon the weather, but then what did one expect the boy to try for breaking through the clouds, as it were, and when he was still getting used to both lions and now the idea of a lion family.
"Good Morning, Sam", Nala turned to him with a smile, "Yes, it is", she glanced up and then back to the boy. "You may sit by me if you want". She left the decision up to him and didn't pressure.
"How are you settling in?", she went on to ask. In all things, she meant, and not just now settling into being a part of a royal lion family. She knew that had to no doubt be strange and it went without saying.

Sam didn’t really mind sitting down next to her.
Honestly, he really hadn’t come to the idea of having a new mom yet. Or even a dad for that matter. So he’d decided to take things one step at a time, look at them as friends first - just friends that now pretty much looked after him. It made it way easier he figured.
So taking a seat, he looked over at her. “Honestly I feel like the weathers always perfect here,” which was true. He hadn’t seen any storms there since before the crash which was interesting... “Kinda weird since it was a storm that crashed us, but I’m assuming it does actually rain here eventually right?” He joked.
Settling in, that was a good question. Admittedly he did give a sheepish, lopsided smile at that. “I mean I think I’ve relaxed a bit more than I thought I would. Sleeping out in the open was scary. But I don’t exactly lose sleep in a den of lions,” he replied honestly. “It’s just kind of weird... Seeing you guys in the wild like this and getting up close and personal. Most humans don’t even get within ten feet of a Pride. If anywhere near them at all. Where I come from anyway.”

Nala chuckled, kindly, as Sam said he wasn't used to seeing storms here, "Yes, I've never really understood it, but the weather does follow with what is occurring within the Circle of Life", she paused, then went on. "I don't know if Simba mentioned his uncle...Scar...but the Pride Lands struggled under his rule", even Nala wasn't fond of thinking back to the years growing up under Scar's reign.
"It's...not as simple as Simba came back and the grass grew again, even now there is still work to be done, and yet...in a way it is. The animals felt secure enough in not being overly hunted to come back and...the Circle of Life started to flow once more. Why rain patterns follow as well, I still don't understand but I think the Great Kings have something to do with that".
Nala also wasn't sure if Simba had mentioned that either, and would explain if Sam needed.
"But yes, it rains, sometimes quite a lot, but then the grass needs it".
Nala felt she could try to understand what Sam meant by sleeping in a den of lions having to grow on him to be secure and not worrying. Depended on where in the Circle of Life humans fit before. They seemed as capable as any hunters and yet...vulnerable too. "It is security, for you and any of your friends, we won't let anything happen to you", she backed up what Simba had no doubt said as well.
She looked genuinely interested as Sam talked of where he had come from, and figured it would be good if the child still felt he could always do such. Even growing with Timon and Pumbaa, Simba hadn't forgotten who he was...well...or after being reminded. "What sorts of animals are where you come from?", she asked.

Sam nodded his head.
Simba of course had mentioned him a few times, and the Cubs a few times before that. But the way Nala described things... Blew his mind. It had just happened like that? How crazy would it have been to think that the rightful king could do something like that?
“That’s... Crazy,” Sam told her in disbelief but still in a good way. He crossed his arms a little. “Then again I’m not shocked. A lot of stuff around here is pretty crazy. But mostly good crazy.”
He then added matter of factly. “I’ll probably understand it a bit more when Simba starts teaching me about the circle of life huh?” He asked honestly. “Right now we’re still going over boarders and stuff. He took me to the edges of it yesterday. Told me where I’m basically not welcome.”
Sam nodded in response, and he was definitely getting a little braver with it. Sleeping with the familial unit had been hard but he was getting braver about it - at least he hoped. “No trust me I like the feeling,” Sam replied honestly. “Your guys fur is so warm and soft. And I actually sleep a little better knowing I’ve got my guardians there with me. Back home we slept separate when we reach a certain age - so we don’t get a lot of that feeling.”
Animals where they came from? Sam smiled a little. “A lot of them were domestic. We kept some in the house, little ones or tamed ones mostly called dogs and cats. But like tiny versions compared to you guys or hyenas,” Sam wished he’d had a picture to show her. “I grew up seeing a lot of lions, but from a distance. Mom worked closely with you guys - but I was little. And lions are way more wild where I come from.”
He chuckled. “I guess that’s why I got nervous the first time I met Simba,” he explained. “But it’s pretty cool how cultured you guys are. I love seeing how a Pride works up close.”

Nala chuckled as Sam just honestly gave his thoughts. "Yes it is rather crazy".
She had a feeling Sam would not be like herself and Simba, but still, as borders were mentioned. "Yes, and they are very important, the boundaries. If Simba seemed to make much of it, it's because...we both made the mistake of wandering too far once and almost paid for it. Many outside of the boundaries are not friendly towards us and most Pride Landers", she explained while trying not to imply all.
Still it would be best for Sam to keep a wide berth.
"I wish in her work I could have met your mother, Sam, she sounds great", Nala commented, carefully though, not wanting to bring up bad memories, but also not wanting to just breeze past Sam's mother and her memory.
They had smaller cats and canines?
"Interesting", Nala tired to picture tiny lions and perhaps painted dogs, but knew she as probably still not doing it right.
"More wild as in they don't know of the Circle of Life?". Not every animal did, after all.

Sam looked thoughtfully.
He could imagine the reasons why they weren’t welcome, after all, his first real encounter with danger with Zira had spoken volumes. But the thought that either of these two had done anything crazy! That was interesting. “Wait you two? But you seem so by the book no -“ he paused. “Ok mostly by the book. I’m not in any book.” He joked.
The notion of her mother meeting any of them made Sam smile a bit. As he stayed longer the less sad he was and the more... Reminiscent he was. Looking back on the good times rather than the bad. “She would have liked you and Simba,” he explained. “She came on this expedition mostly to study lions like you honestly. Strong, powerful, natural leaders. I’m probably living her dream a bit.” He teased.
Oh yes, she could say that at the circle of life. Sam had to think about how to best broach the subject. “Where I came from animals like lions had a culture but couldn’t express it. Since they weren’t gifted with speech like you guys are,” Sam explained. Which was the best way to put it. “We spoke two different ways entirely - so only some people could convey messages to them. People like my mom who spent a long time studying them - gained their trust.”
He then added. “But if they saw something as a threat and couldn’t be calmed down. It didn’t end well for humans,” he chuckled a little. “But for good reasons. Like if someone took Kion or Kiara to be checked out by a doctor but you didn’t understand they were being looked at. You’d probably do anything to protect them.”
Which made him realize... “Wow I guess I am sorta starting to understand lions better too.” He laughed.
