SARABI Ah, so he was an adolescent. She more or less figured that, but she had a habit of referring to youths of all sizes as cubs. She would stretch, muscles flexing and some bones popping. Youth... She really wasn't young anymore.
Zion was an interesting name. The Tree didn't have any other name as far as she knew, but perhaps it had a long time ago. Many things were like that in this world; generations change and stories change, sometimes falling far from their origins. Others preferred simplicity; the 'Tree of Life' was something anyone could understand.
"I should let Simba know, then, that they seek it, if he doesn't already know. I haven't met another human, but I know greed." Her voice was soft. Not outwardly judgmental, just cautious in a practiced way.
"Not slow enough." She remarked, referring to aging with amusement. His next words interested her. "They don't talk? I take it only the humans do? That is strange. I couldn't imagine that. For all that I remember or have heard, we all have voices. It's the same for living long. Hm... Do they try to speak? Do they understand you when you speak?" So very strange. "Nomads and rogues live shorter lives due to the dangers they face, and elephants live for generations in their herds. ...The sun will set for me earlier than most." She offered a reassuring smile.

Sam nodded, of course he had warned Simba.
But he also felt like she had a good point about greed. He’d hoped that the human adults would have given up and gone home by now. But this place was huge, they probably didn’t even know which way home was. Either way, though… “Well you’ll never have to worry about me. I owe your… Our,” he corrected himself. “Pride my life. Without Kiara and Kovu I’d have died out there….”
He paused. “Without Simba, even if I got back. I’d probably be back to square one,” he explained. “You guys gave me a chance - no one other than David has done. I will never forget that. My loyalty is something I take very seriously.”
It was true, once you had Sam’s loyalty - it was for life, he’d fight and die for you.
Sam listened carefully to her questions and the answer to his. It was all very interesting. What was it about this world that the animals could talk and reason? He was so deep in thought at first that it took him a minute to reply. “Animals try to communicate all the time. And David thinks they do understand on some level. But not like you guys,” he explained honestly. “We - and you, reason and communicate on a different level. It must be something about where we are that makes you different.”
He shrugged. “Not that I mind, I always liked animals way better anyway,” he chuckled. Shaking his head though he tilted his head. “I’m sorry to think it’ll set at all. You seem pretty cool.”

SARABI She would take it up with the King, then. It didn't seem like Sam knew more than this, and besides, this wasn't an interrogation; he was family now. Him talking about her grandchild and her mate had her smile fondly, and she nodded. The spark in his eyes showed his earnest emotions, and she understood well how giving aid to creatures, small or large, formed an unbreakable bond. That was exactly why they held to the Circle of Life as they did; kindness has its place.
"It perplexes me." She spoke honestly. "It's always been this way. And, you are a pretty cool animal too." Amusement curled in her voice. He must consider himself different than them... But if all but humans lack communication where he's from, then it could have caused that perspective. She'd just have to remind him, then. "I can easily see your curiosity. You're not after the Tree or our lands for what it has, but for why it has it, and how to help. How to understand. You're young, but you have a noble heart. I see why the Great Kings speak to you. I've no doubt you'll find your answers someday. But today," she cast her eyes out to the lands, "you are One with us. Protection, discovery... it all has its place." Her ear flicked, and the breeze combed her fur.

Oh right, he guessed in a way he was one too.
After all, humans were both apes and he was a Pridelander now, it’d take some getting used to. What surprised him more was what she had to say about Sam himself. No one had ever really voiced it like that to him. David did in his own little ways, but the fact anyone here saw him as anything more than garbage…
It was a nice feeling.
“Thanks Sarabi, I don’t think you know how much it means to hear that,” he said shyly. A little red faced but in a good way. “I try my best anyway. I like learning, and I’ve learned so much here… It’s hard not to fall in love with it.”
One of us, honestly, that sounded better than anything else. Taking a deep breath. He just hoped it would last… as it proved so many people who had called him “unadoptable”, “annoying”, and so many other things wrong…. “I like the sound of that,” he finally managed. “Though it’s gonna take some getting used to… It’s a good new.” He admitted. “I just hope I am worth the trouble.”

SARABI Rising to her paws, she chuckled, looking at him from a side glance. "Oh you are worth more than the trouble. Simba was quite the rascal as a cub and I could handle him. And do you know what we do with unruly cubs?" She'd carefully move her maw to grab his arm in the same hold as they did for youths, attempting to pull him down and lay a paw over his middle to keep him still. She'd begin to groom his 'mane', rough tongue certainly not built for human hair, but she didn't recognize it.
"I can't tell you how many times he nearly got Zazu trampled, sat on, and eaten. Oh, we'd hear all about it later... And here Simba would come at the end of the day, barely able to keep his eyes open, and you had to wonder how he did all that. ...And then he's waking you up before dawn." Those were the brief joys of motherhood she did experience, fondly recounted.

There was a mild panic from him for a moment.
For Sam, David had never been physically affectionate, he’d only shown it in other little ways. And well, his mother, was his mother… So it took him a minute to realize what she was doing. He’d seen it done before, though being in the middle of it did surprise him.
Well… He supposed he was a cub to them now.
Either way, the tension melted away a bit. Honestly, he didn’t know if it was because it was him against a lion or because he felt secure in the hold. Either way, he’d let her do it - and get a real bath later in case he’d actually started to smell.
Besides, he guessed it wasn’t so humiliating considering he’d noticed he wasn’t the only “cub” getting the treatment. May as well try to blend in with them, right?
“Oh this is nothing, you should have seen me when I was like… Way smaller. I was always getting into trouble,” he noted as he tried to move himself into a semi comfortable position. “Though I don’t think I’ve ever been “groomed” before. I didn’t even really bathe until David made me.”
Before Dawn? The king was a morning person? Well that was one thing he couldn’t relate to. “Ew who gets up before Dawn?” He asked. “I couldn’t believe how early you guys got up already!”

SARABI Age hadn't notably taken away her strength, so he would feel it in her movements and her weight. She was a lion. At being told he didn't really bathe when he was small, she gave him an incredulous look, a brow raising. "Well, that won't be allowed here." Clean and presentable, like all Pridelanders. Just furless and with these things called 'clothes'. She'd slick his mane up, then wash his back. She was polite; she didn't stray lower than that.
"There, done." She'd bump his back with her paw as if urging him to run along now. "That 'croc' will think twice about sassing you now." Not that she knew specifics... but he had mentioned it when he first got up.

That was fair.
But what was with adults and making sure that he was clean all the time? Sam hadn’t really gotten that part ever. Either way, he hardly had time to respond to her croc comment when one of his friends called out. ”Come on, Sam! You promised to tell us more about Batman, remember?” A cub about his age shouted. ”Though I still don’t get how he’s not a bat…”
Right. Sam smirked a little and waved a goodbye to Sabari. “I’ll be sure to rub it in his face when I see him,” he replied before rushing over to already begin explaining. “Ok, for the last time, it’s like a metaphor…”
