VITANI
Nicknames: Tani Age: Mid 20s Gender: Female Species: Lioness Homeland: Outlands Allegiance or Pride: Pridelands - Lion Guard Custom title: Leader of the Lion Guard
GENERAL INFOPersonality: Vitani is fierce in both words and fighting ability. She does not shrink back from having a barbed tongue and speaking her mind, especially since she joined the Pridelands. Though she does not fight as often as she did when she was an Outlander, Vitani still practices every day and loves the adrenaline that fighting in combat causes. Though there is a lot that she is still learning and Vitani finds herself feeling inadequate or frustrated that her childhood did not teach her the every day aspects of life that the Pridelanders seem to naturally know. She is a proud lioness though and these things are hardly ever brought up verbally unless she’s with one of the royal family. Vitani does not do well with being lazy or having restful days, so, she’s always on the move and hardly ever sits still. She is a great leader and takes her role as leader of the Lion Guard seriously.

History: Vitani’s childhood was strange and difficult to say the least. Her parents were two of the most fearsome lions that have ever existed and almost all of her blood relatives are dead now. Unfortunately for her, everyone knows the stories and the truth behind them. Scar, her father, was the most evil lion who ever walked these lands as he plotted to overthrow his brother by murdering him. Scar had thought he had murdered his own nephew as well, but Simba had escaped the original attempt only to come back and defeat Scar as an adult. Scar’s lies were believed enough among the Pride though that when Simba came back to claim the throne, the Pridelands were split in half over who was considered to be the rightful ruler. Scar’s followers were outcast and send to live in the Outlands.
Her mother, Zira, was Scar’s most loyal follower and his mate. Vitani barely remembers being carried by another lioness while her mother carried the cub that Scar had chosen as his heir, Kovu. Her older brother, Nuka, was old enough to walk with the other followers on his own. He always remembered that day, just as he always remembered the day Scar blatantly told everyone that Nuka was not to be his heir, but that Kovu was. Vitani always knew her place to be a follower, a good little solider, who never questioned orders and always obeyed. As a result, that’s exactly what she did.
Vitani did everything she was expected to. Play with Kovu when he was bored, help train Kovu and help him become the best fighter in the Outlands, keep Nuka from complaining, make sure the other lionesses were also training and hunting properly, and the list grew and grew. Vitani handled everything. But she never questioned Zira, ever. She grew up believing that Kovu would help their entire pride become better. Vitani understood her place and she never questioned it until a series of events happened that would change her entire belief system.
Two lionesses wandered into the Outlands who were looking for the Pridelands. Zira took them in and added them into the ranks. Vitani had not liked the look to them, they both were scrawny, weak from starvation, and had no fighting experience. To her, they were useless and dead weight. Vitani didn’t even say a single word to either of them except to be the one to order others to care for them. However, Zira had other plans and she ordered the older one to become mates with Nuka. Nuka balked and was going to refuse until Vitani forced him to listen to their mother. She knew that Zira was trying to force the pride to continue and if Kovu let them all down, that meant that Nuka was their pride’s only male lion. Vitani was brutal with both her words and her claws in that fight. Nuka was being especially stubborn and could not see their mother’s plan. Vitani dragged Nuka to Inyere and literally dropped his bloody body off at the den their mother had given the two new couple. She growled at Inyere and ordered her to make sure he completed his duties before sulking off.
But then things started changing. Vitani’s world slowly started to crumble. As she went about her duties of now watching both of her brother’s complete their own duties, both brother’s were acting different. Kovu was not attacking Simba and he was getting closer to Kiara. Nuka was actually being nice to Inyere. Both brothers were falling in love… what even was that? She knew the word existed, but she had never ever seen it in action, right before her very eyes. Vitani even had to start listening to Nuka start to drone on and on about how beautiful Inyere was and Inyere this, and Inyere that. Vitani did not understand. So, she dived even deeper into her role as being the perfect second in command.
The day Nuka died was the day that Vitani could no longer ignore that what Zira was doing was wrong. But, the Pridelanders had killed her brother and Kovu had betrayed them! The battle that approached was deserved and one of vengeance for Vitani. She finally let out of her frustration and confused emotions out in that battle. But what she was not expecting was for Kovu and Kiara to interrupt the battle. They literally halted everything. And for the first time, some of what Kiara said rang true with how she had been feeling but had never been given the opportunity to understand. So, when Zira ordered Vitani to attack, she thought about Nuka and Inyere. She thought about Kovu and Kiara. She thought about how living under her mother’s paws her entire life had been. And Vitani stepped forward and for the first time ever, denied her mother. Vitani watched as her mother’s pride killed her, completely unsure on how to feel.
Over the next few weeks, Vitani had ordered a lioness to go fetch Inyere and Lesedi from the Outlands. The lioness came back a few days later and said that they were gone. Vitani was not completely surprised and got caught up in learning all about the Pridelands as well as the truth of the history that Zira had twisted. She and a few of her most trusted friends, started to take care of the needs of the animals in the Pridelands. Now that she was no longer second in command, Vitani needed something to fill her time. And she felt like she needed to prove that the former Outlanders could be good. So, by the time Kion and the Lion Guard came back, Vitani and her lionesses were already established and respected by the Prideland animals. She challenged Kion to see who was better fit to protect the Pridelands and after each team member showed their worth, after a brief discussion, Kion realized that Vitani was the right lion to lead the Guard. It was at that moment when Vitani gained the Lion Guard mark and the roar of the elders came to her.
Now, for the first time, Vitani’s path was her own to create and she could finally start to do good and repair the damage that had been done.
