It was early morning a week or so after his arrival.
Sam’s leg had finally recovered, but now a new challenge settled in. They still hadn’t found the other humans, with no word out Sam was beginning to worry quietly that he was the only one who survived. Both a depressing and unsettling feeling, to say the least.
Either way, now that he could finally walk, he at least didn’t feel shackled.
All the same, as he sat near the edge of Pride Rock that early morning… He wondered whether he should stay, or try and find the others. On one hand, he was safe there. On the other hand, it was like he had told Rafiki, he always overstayed his welcome,
Unlike back home, however, there wasn’t a bridge underpass to make a home in. Or an odd job to earn money. Standing between him and civilization was a large expanse of Savannah that no doubt would not end for a very long time.
“… Wish you were here, Dave,” he muttered to himself. “I don’t think I’m ready to do this alone.”
And that annoyed him to no end.

The morning hadn't even left the darkness when Kiara had awoken. With Simba and Nala away, it had fallen on her to watch over their Pride and she had enlisted the help of another bird to give her the morning report. It would have been helpful to have Ono or Zazu, but both were not in the area currently. Zazu had chosen to fly with her parents to wherever they had gone, to send a message if needed. The walk to the submit had been peaceful and she enjoyed watching the sunrise over the eastern border.
She slowed in her travel down the path when she saw a figure at the edge of the great rock. It never surprised her to see the Lion Guard going on their Patrol. Vitani was a good and strong leader, she took her job seriously, as had Kion. The group had not official become the Guard until the return of Kion, but she had allowed them to operate as such. But, the presence of the human youth, he was still a surprise when he was here.
Kiara had no intention of startling him, but heard his mutters, which caught her attention. Was he trying to speak to the spirit of the past? Trying to gain their advice? He called to one by name, it was odd to her that a youth would call to them like that. She padded up and smiled as she neared him. "Already speaking to the spirits?" Kiara asked calmly as she sat down on the edge as well, looking over the Pride Lands with careful eyes. TAG: Samwel IgweLOCATION: Pride Rock in the Pride Lands COMMENTS: ^_^

Sam nearly jumped out of his skin.
Though he did relax when he realized it was Kiara. She hadn’t seemed to be someone to be afraid of, though he did feel a little nervous given well - princess and all. “Oh good morning your highness,” he bowed respectfully before shaking his head. “Spirits, what do you…? Oh!”
Right. He supposed that they would be the types to talk to their ancestors huh? After a deep breath, he guessed it wasn’t so bad to talk about what he was doing out there. “Oh, I uh… No I was just thinking about what I’m gonna do now, actually,” he admitted. “Usually if I didn’t have somewhere to live I had like a billion options on the streets, but this time it’s complicated. I’m a long way from home, my mentor’s dead, and we still don’t know about the others.”
It was the honest truth. If not a little blunt. “I guess I’m just trying to strategize what I do next,” he explained. “If I just trek the Savannah until I find home or not.” After all, he wasn’t sure how badly he wanted to find Zion anymore.
He shrugged. “Nothing new though, I’ve pretty much been on my own since I was little. Just a new adventure.” He said with a thumbs up.

Kiara had tried not to startle him, but she forgot that as a Human, he did not have the same senses that she did. His hearing was lacking compared to her, his eyesight as well, and his smell. It made her feel bad for him and she wondered briefly how he might survive in the Pridelands? Nothing had been found of the plane... The word was so foreign even in her mind.
"Please, call me Kiara..." She hated being called your highness. Yes, she was a princess, but she was working member of the Pride. She fought for her place in the hunting party. She listened to him speak of his world and she found the words to be strange to her still. Streets... He had mentioned them before the past. "Well, there are plenty of places in the Pridelands, if you wish to not stay on Pride Rock, which no one has thought to tell you to leave." It was true, the cubs enjoyed his company and the lions had yet to speak ill of him.
"If you were to move from here, would you prefer a tree? Den? Or build... Oh... a hut?" Rafiki had told her about things that some of the people outside of the Pridelands lived in. Huts made of grass and mud, hardened with fire to help it stay together. She smiled when he mentioned it was just a new adventure. Oh right, no one had told him to leave that was true.
Sam guessed he just assumed that they would want him gone eventually. He had assumed as a foreign entity they would eventually want him gone as lions. But then again, these were hardly your typical lions. “Oh! I guess… I thought you guys would want me gone now that I’d healed up,” he chuckled nervously. “Not that I’m against it or anything. My mentor and I actually researched lions. He’d have flipped at the chance.”
Where would he live? Oh right, hypothetically. He hadn’t even thought of that option. But he guessed he rightfully should if there was any chance that he was trapped here. “I don’t know actually, I guess I’d probably try to build a hut like you said,” he explained. Scratching his chin. “I’d need to figure out the logistics of how I’d actually survive out here. Hunting, probably, lots of foraging.”

Kiara smiled at him as he spoke and looked out over the lands surround Pride Rock. "You have given us little reason to want you just gone... We welcome all to the Pridelands and you aren't exactly an animal who knows how to survive in the Savannah," she said in all honesty. From what he had spoke about, his place of birth was a little different here. "We don't want to just tell you to figure it out, so for now, you should learn how to survive in this new place."
As he went over things in his mind, she nodded in agreement about all of this thoughts. "One step at a time then... Hunting would likely be ahead of finding you a place to live and foraging as well," she said to him as they sat there looking out over the Pride Lands. That was also fair.
Sam was, after all, a friend to the animals, right? He'd always had a special place in his heart for them, so it was hardly like he was someone dangerous. But learning to survive, that was a good point, he had to be careful around here. After all, he was barely fourteen as of a few weeks ago. "Well, I already have a leg up as we like to say," He admitted honestly. "Where I came from, most animals don't talk. But there have been other kids that lived. The fact I can communicate with you guys makes it a lot easier than it would have been for them."
Albeit, most of them were also younger, but at the same time... Well, what could he do there?
"I think a part of me wants to keep researching too. There's so much I can learn from you guys," He also observed. It was the honest truth, he had fallen a bit in love with the observing and recording of everyday life. "I mean, as long as that's OK. I promise not to pry or record anything you don't want to record... But it's all so cool."
Oh right, hunting probably would be wouldn't it? There was so much that could go wrong there. "Good point. I don't want to uh... Run afoul the wrong animals." After all, they could easily maul him.

Kiara listened as he spoke about how different it was here verses where he had come from. It was very true, though she had never be to where it was from. Was it really do different outside of this place? And what made the Pridelands so unique compared to other places? What about the tree of life? Was it unique like them as well.
"Learning is good and you are new here... I think Rafiki would encourage learning," Kiara said, though the sound of researching made her feel weird. It made her feel like she was to be studied. Maybe it was best to just come to terms that she was different to him. By all accounts, she was studying him too, learning about him as much as she could.
She chucked at his words about running into the wrong animal. "Most here won't attack unless you give them fair reason... And if you respect the circle of life, you won't do any harm." TAG: Samwel IgweLOCATION: Pride Rock in the Pride Lands COMMENTS: ^_^

Sam nodded a little in response.
Though of course, he didn’t want to make anyone feel awkward. He was the kind of kid who probably could understand how that felt. “Don’t worry, I’ll be subtle about it - I uh… Know what it’s like to have people staring at you,” he said with all honesty. Deciding to be a little transparent like they had been with him. “Where I came from a lot of people did the same kind of things to me… David used to tell me they didn’t understand - like they wanted to, but…”
But no one wanted to step in, in his case at least. Clearing his throat, he decided to chose his words carefully. “Well, let’s just say. If I ever step out of line, just tell me and I’ll back off,” he decided. “I don’t want to spend all my time doing it anyway. I want to explore, and experience what you guys do. It seems like you have fun…”
“Fun” that was kind of a foreign concept to him. With a deep sigh he worded that as. “I haven’t really had tons of time for that either,” he explained. “But I’m not gonna bore you with my story.”
Not to mention he didn’t want to talk much about it either. They knew he was an orphan, and that was as far as he wanted it.
As she mentioned the Circle of Life however, he did arch an eyebrow curiously. Of course, humans had some grasp of that as well - though maybe not as deeply. “Just so we’re on the same page here, what is the circle of life?” He asked. “I mean we have a similar idea but uh… I don’t know how animals actually view it.”

Kiara listened to him speak about where he came from. She didn't quite understand why someone would just stare, but there worlds seemed totally different. In the Pride Lands, they didn't have things like the outside world did. She had heard enough about different things, but the animal world, it was obviously different.
"Don't worry, I will let you know..." She said as she let her tail flick off the edge of the rock, letting it hang down. "And you are welcome to tell me about your life, Sam... I don't mind." She laid her head down and looked out over the Savannah. It was nice to really just relax, but she was also keeping an eye out for her father and mother.
At his question, she lifted his head and thought about how her father had explained it. "Let me see... The circle of life is like the sunrise and the sunset... We are all born, bright and new each morning... We grow and light up the world in our own way... As we set, we pass on our knowledge to those around us and then we set into the night, our bodies unable to light the world any long... Our bodies then return to the earth, giving life to land, which gives life to the world around us..." She explained in the best way she could...
"My grandfather told my father, when we die... Our bodies become the grass and the animals eat the grass... We eat the animals... But one day, we will become the dirt and grass..." It was more complicated, but it was important to respect the world and the circle. TAG: Samwel IgweLOCATION: Pride Rock in the Pride Lands COMMENTS: ^_^

Right. About his life.
That wasn’t exactly a fairy tale unlike what he figured a princesses would be. As he tilted his head and thought about how to reply about it, without giving too much away… After all everyone started to pity him the second he went too in depth. And god knew he hated the pity party. “I uh… My life wasn’t anything special,” he admitted finally. “I’ve been working since I was a little kid to keep food in my belly. Got into the occasional scrape when I had to fight for it. Then David found me and gave me a real job and a real roof over my head.”
He paused as he thought of David again. “He had the more exciting life. And every time I think about how he let himself die for me I have to wonder what he was thinking.” He then added. “He should be telling you his story not me.”
As she talked about the circle of life. It was… Way deeper than he was anticipating. Closing his eyes at a gentle breeze it made a dozen thoughts enter his brain at once. Was that how it happened? They all just sort of went back into the earth spiritually? It was pretty crazy to think. “You understand it way deeper than we do, the way we give back the land anyway,” he explained. “No one in my culture thinks about it that deep. But I think it’s awesome to think about.”

Kiara wasn't just doing this for him, she was doing it for her to. She wanted to learn about him and his creatures. Humans were new to everyone in the Pridelands, though Ma Tembo and Rafiki seemed to have seen them before. But both of them had traveled. Ma Tembo had traveled beyond the Pridelands many years ago during the time of Taka... She had seen the creatures herself... Rafiki as well, though he had traveled in his youth.
She listened, though didn't understand much of it. Working for food? In the Savannah, sure it was work, but this felt different than just going on a hunt. When he spoke about David, she gave him a look of sympathy. "Obviously, he thought your special enough to him to make sure you lived." Anyone who saved someone above themselves likely thought that about the other. Mufasa had done it for her father... "My grandfather died to save my father." It was fact, she didn't find sadness in it, though she never met Mufasa.
When it came to the circle of life, she smiled. "Well, maybe our life is different from those of the humans... For us, that is how we find balance in our lives... peace... Everyone has to return to the earth someday," she said as she let her paw scrap across the rock she laid on. TAG: Samwel IgweLOCATION: Pride Rock in the Pride Lands COMMENTS: ^_^

Sam hadn’t thought about that.
David had never called him his son, or formally adopted him in any way - but had that been what he thought of him? He really didn’t know. But it made him feel a pit in his stomach. “I uh… I’m not sure our relationship was like that,” he admitted after a long silence. “I find it hard to believe someone would care that much. My parents didn’t even care enough to stick around.”
And yet… Why had he pushed him out of the plane to safety? Was it an act of love? Sam didn’t think he’d ever experienced that before - so he wouldn’t know. “Not that it was all bad. There are lots of good memories too,” he explained. “Like snowball fights with the other urchins. Or stealing candy from old man Marcus’ shop when he wasn’t looking.” He shook his head. “One time he got so mad he chased me for two miles. His face was so red.” He chuckled.
Everyone has to return to the earth someday. That was was definitely something he could openly agree with. “I think humans are more afraid of death,” he told her finally. “… Like we know it’s inevitable - but we are too scared to think about what it does for the rest of the world I guess?”

"Well, whatever the relationship... He obviously cared for you," Kiara said to him, sure that had to be the reason. Her eyes looked to the sky as she listened to him talk. She understood that stealing happened, but she flicked her tail a little in disapproval, but didn't allow it to show on her face. His life was obviously different from her own, she had no place to judge him by her standards.
She chuckled at his memory of being chased by another. "It sounds like you have good memories," Kiara said with a smile and listened as he spoke about death and how they looked at it. "I think some of us fear it, but we prepare for it for a young age." It was true, she had been taught about the circle of life at a young age. She never really feared death, but she knew it was coming one day. TAG: Samwel IgweLOCATION: Pride Rock in the Pride Lands COMMENTS: ^_^

Sam could tell she didn’t approve of the thieving by the look in her eyes.
He guessed that to a lion, or animal in general that seemed weird. Maybe he should explain? As painful as it was to explain those things maybe she’d get it. “They were good memories. But hard too. A lot of the time I stole because I was hungry,” he explained honestly. “Our kind… Doesn’t really take care of the cubs that get left alone. So some of us have to steal to survive.”
He then added, with a chuckle. “But candy’s kind of more of a treat. So that was where I got to have some fun with it,” he explained honestly. “I wish I had a lolipop to show you just how good that stuff was. It’s like… Honey and catnip. Do you guys have catnip?” He joked.
As for the circle of life, he nodded his head slowly. That was true. He supposed it was easier. “I like your philosiphy. Honestly, I just like it here a lot,” he admitted. “This is the kind of world I could get used to… At least. The animals here seem to get it.”
But he wasn’t about to get ahead of himself. He couldn’t stay forever, right?
