Kabili was a little nervous about today.
Simba had finally approached him about “meeting” his mom today. And while he was thankful that the king wanted to he couldn’t help but feel a knot in his stomach the closer they were getting to that gravesite. To both her gravesite and Mufasa’s intended gravesite.
Sure, he didn’t mind the alone time. Having found more independence he hadn’t spent one-on-one time in a while with the king, but still. What if he was angry? Or... God he had to get himself to calm down.
As they entered the oasis, he turned his head a little with a smile. He was definitely hopeful that he wouldn’t be upset by his idea at least. “This walks a lot easier these days. When I crashed here it felt like it went on forever,” he pointed out honestly. “I crashed about fifty yards that way.” He pointed out, figuring he may be curious.
He made his way toward the path he and Nala had taken. “I uh... Kind of warn you. It’s not the prettiest walk. We have to go past my crash sight,” he admitted. “It might be a bit intense.”
He hadn’t warned Nala but he’d been too in his feelings that day. Plus, Simba also had trauma that needed to be addressed. And he wasn’t sure how he reacted to carnage... Well, not hunt related carnage anyway. God why was he so nervous?

It wasn't that Simba didn't talk of his father, but that there wasn't a lot to say. Most everything he had was second-hand, and even then either distant memories or lost in everything that was going on around him. He... didn't have a lot to say, other than of what he meant to him.
However as far as he knew, this was about Kabili's loss, and he kept his pace slow, his body relaxed. Intentionally going against his regal posture, he was here as Kabili's dad. Not as king, at all. He wouldn't want to be king in this moment.
"I've had... worse walks." Simba said simply, looking upon the path, bracing himself for what he would see. "This is too important to not be brave... I'm here for you." he brushed his shoulder against Kabili as he spoke, taking a look around, at what Kabili had led him to.

Kabili smiled a little.
He coiled definitely feel that change in Simba’s demeanor too. It kind of surprised him as he always seemed to carry himself a certain way. But he did remind himself just that - he was his dad. The lion probably did this a lot and he just hadn’t seen it as much. Though he recounted the playfulness he did show and reminded himself of that.
He smiled again as he brushed up against him. “Thanks, I appreciate that. I mean, I know it’s silly because she’s gone. But I mean, it feels right she “meets” you both,” he admitted. “Last time I was here I almost... Felt like she was there with mom and I. I don’t know... Maybe I just imagined things but.”
The teen paused a little as they made it to the crash site just before the clearing. Brow furrowing again as he mentioned. “But yeah, that’s where we came down. If you were wondering,” he pointed out calmly. “Kind of crazy to think how far I was from Pride Rock now...” He admitted.

The king, no... his dad, nodded, "I can believe it." he said cryptically. He pointed his gaze at the wreckage in front of him, tense. "I... see." he nodded solemnly, "Yes it's... definitely a miracle you found us. I don't... think you just got lucky." he wasn't sure about someone guiding him, he wasn't sure about magic. Sure he talked to his dad, but... did he really, and Rafiki could just be crazy, mixed with medicine...
Simba shook his head at the thoughts, he most certainly did believe in something... beyond. The great kings of the past from above, heaven. "Either way... yes. She's... up there now." he gestured his head toward the sky, "And this is where you were closest to her. Are closest to her." he sighed. "It's like that ravine..." he shuddered. "W-well uh, you said you were showing me something... in particular..."

There was that sentiment, not luck but destiny, fate, or intervention. It seemed like most animals he’d met were of the same opinion - perhaps simply because he had ended up in the family of royalty. How fast it had happened. How easy it had been. He paused a moment.
“It’s like I said, it might not have been. I still know I heard that voice.... When mom passed. Pushing me to keep going. Guiding me,” he managed with a lump in his throat. “I didn’t hear it until... Until I could leave her though. Until I had to...”
He closed his eyes and remembered clearly some of the things he said. “One thing he said kept me going though. “You are too strong to die here. Remember who you are.”,” he said. “If someone was actually talking to me, I think he meant because my mom was strong, y’know?”
Shaking himself out of his thoughts though, he was reminded again that they did have a reason to be here. Smiling a little he nodded along as he lead the way away from the crash... Away from those harsh memories that came flooding back. “You’re right. I actually have more to do here than just let you “meet” mom,” he then added. “I just hope you like it...”

Simba moved in closer, putting his shoulder and foreleg as close to Kabili as he could. "Yes, you mentioned the voice... Do you really think there is something more to it?" Rafiki, that crazy monkey, was the only one who put as much stock as Kabili did toward such things. Zazu and Timon, his other father figures, were dismissive of it. If in very different ways.
He gave pause. "I... can see why." he still had his doubts about when his father spoke with him, Kion's roar had opened him up but he still wasn't sure. "Remember who you are... that's what my dad said to me. From the clouds..." he looked up as he spoke, "It makes sense then, dad brought you to me." While he had no reason to disbelieve, at the same time he had made the choices on his own, with advice from his subjects. He was pleased, but this was more of approval and less of setting things up.
While they were talking, the pair came upon the scene. It was good that Simba was focused on memories, painful ones, ahead of seeing the wreckage. It was as they left it, even buzzards and vultures had avoided the scene. Soon enough past the carnage they would come upon them. "What... is this?" he asked, with genuine curiosity as he looked upon the pair of stones, he knew there was meaning to it, but it was foreign to him.

Kabili was silent and about to answer when Simba spoke up.
Wait, his dad, Mufasa? He had said that to him? His dad had brought him to Simba? Kabili's mind swirled with many, many thoughts now as he tried to figure out exactly why. Why would Mufassa? Arguably the greatest king to ever live in many eyes in this valley chose to speak, or reach out to him? His head hurt a little. "But Mufasa... Spoke to me? Me?" He asked. "I wasn't even anybody until all of this.. I was just some kid from New York. I was a nobody. He had like a dozen different zoologists to speak to."
He was still wrapping his mind around it when Simba spoke up. Oh, the gravestones! He had almost forgotten for half a minute why they were there, he stopped in front of them. "Well... You see. In human culture, we bury our dead. And we make... Memorials to them. Sometimes big, or sometimes smaller... Like this," He explained to him very honestly. "Mom and I made the one for mom here... But I was thinking. I was uh..."
He took a deep breath. "I was thinking, I mean. I know we don't have his body. But I wanted to thank you somehow... I thought maybe we could make the other one grandpas... You know?"

Simba didn't entirely understand Kabili's reaction, the same he didn't understand Kiara. Why would you want to see yourself as normal?
"I think what he was trying to say, is that you were somebody, you haven't changed... you are still her son too." he smiled, "It was your destiny." he nodded as he spoke.
He listened to Kabili's words. "Uh huh..." it took him longer than he would ever admit to catch on they put extra work, beyond what the pridelanders do, when burying.
"Memorials... like our paintings but..." he hrmed, and nodded. "That's... very nice. We truly could learn from you." he smiled. It was one of the few things that humans did that was simply better than eating them and leaving them.
Simba froze a minute. "I..." he tensed up. He certainly saw value in the custom. A memorial to his dad sounded good, but the king part of him sounded up... his mouth opened, but then... he pushed that part of him aside. He took a deep breath. "That's a wonderful idea." he said it, how he felt, and that's what mattered. Mufasa like him, was king but also his dad. This was a time, he felt, it was about his dad, Kabili's grandad.

Kabili gave a soft smile.
He... Appreciated Simba's thoughts there, especially since he and Nala both seemed to respect that. The fact that she'd always be his mom, even many years from now when he was a grown man. "That makes sense... I always will be her son, I mean... I hope so anyway," He joked. "I want to think it's like Zazu said. She lives on in me and all. And I'm just continuing her work. Just in like... A direct way?"
His destiny...? Was it really that simple, that he had always been meant to come here? "Regardless... It means a lot to me that grandpa chose me like that... Or cared enough to get me here," He said honestly. "I guess he saw something in me even if I didn't... It's just crazy to think he spoke to me. I'm probably the first human to hear something like that in... Who knows how long."
Kabili gave a small, but sad smile as he mentioned how nice it was. It was true, it was a nice way to remember those you loved. And lost. "That's why I said you guys could meet her... It's like... It's a way anyone who wants to can," He admitted. "When I'm here... It's like she never left." He said. His voice a little broken. Betraying a sadness. "Like she's right there, always will be... And now she'll be a part of the land - the one she should have seen..." . When he froze though, Kabili got very nervous. What if Simba was offended? Had he taken his ideas a step too far? He bit his lip, but watched as his face changed and he replied that it was a wonderful idea. His breath escaping his pursed lips. "I'm... Glad you feel that way. He just... I felt like it wasn't a whole lot, but it was some way of thanking you," He admitted honestly. "You risked everything taking me in. And I know you never wanted a thank you. But it's the least I could do. Since it's like my mom used to say, actions speak louder than words."

Simba smiled, hoping that he made the right choice, and doing his best to hide any doubts he had about it. He could tell that Kabili had an idea of what he was feeling, and didn't want him to worry further by showing it.
"You are a smart kid, with a big heart. Always thinking about others, I'm sure your mother was the same way." he nodded, "We all wish our parents could be around forever, it's still tragic to lose them so young." he sighed. He thought on that, she had been so close, and Kabili was the closest she could get. He felt he should honor her, and this grave was... closure, at least.
"Could you step away for a moment? I'd... like to be alone with them for a little bit." Simba said with a gentle smile. He looked up, then to the grave. "Just over there would be fine." he pointed to a shaded area, far enough Kabili could see Simba but not hear him, precisely what Simba desired.

Wow.
Kabili wasn't expecting Simba to say that, honestly. But at the same time, he knew that it did feel better and all... Knowing that the king at least looked upon him in that way. Even if one could argue he'd made that clear plenty of times. After all, he had told him he loved him - and called him his son for a while now. It was not like they had met for the first time a few hours ago, he guessed.
"Right... Nothing lasts forever," He finally replied after some time of silence had passed. "I just hope I make her proud."
He paused as Simba mentioned wanting to be alone for a bit. He could understand that, after all he imagined that he had his things to say to his mom like Nala had. Added onto the fact of having things to say to his own dad as well. He nodded and smiled. "No problem, dad. We can write something nice on his when you're ready," He replied as he started his way toward the shaded tree. "Holler if you need something!"

Simba put his paw to Kabili, "We will enjoy them while we can, and always remember them." he said with wisdom, "Right. Do think of something, would you?" it gave Kabili something to do while he waited, he hoped.
With a nod, Simba watched as Kabili walked away. He wanted his son with him, but not with this moment. All the boy could see once he had kept his distance, would be Simba lowering his head. It would be a while before his snout moved, and at first, if the boy was watching, it wouldn't look like he was talking. Mumbling, perhaps, though soon enough Kabili would have his attention elsewhere...

The lioness cub had definitely followed Kabili and Simba here; Else she was getting herself into trouble for some other reason, and that would be unlike her. She popped up from behind a rock, more of hiding than trying to pounce, for one her movement was rather slow.
"So uh... how mad is he?" she asked, concern mixed with a snotty tone. "I told you he might not take it well, adoption or not." she rolled her eyes. "I mean really, if you're going to be a lion you have to learn to do lion stuff. Do things the lion way." she was very close-minded, but she... meant well.

Kabili smiled a little, thankful for Simba’s words of wisdom as per usual. It was hard for him sometimes to remember he could go to someone for that. But he definitely left with more confidence when he took a seat....
Of course, Zuri had to them nearly make him shit his loins.
Taking a deep breath, he turned his head toward Zuri and took a deep breath. “He... Wasn’t mad actually. He was grateful,” he told her pointedly. And with no heat in his words. “He just wanted some time alone with them... I mean I get it I guess... I mean adults are always having conversations us kids can’t join in on.”

Zuri paused, as stunned as she had scared the boy!
"That's... not like him." she pawed at the ground, "Or I... I suppose it is." she sighed heavily, "Why must you complicate things? I mean I know you think you're doing good and... well it's not that you aren't... it's just..." she looked back at the grave "Look I... Don't tell him." she glanced to Simba, who was talking at this point, pacing back and forth.
Zuri would walk around Kabili to face him in the eyes, "If Simba approves of your thing... Maybe Nala would be open to mine." she smiled, "You have a different... idea of things. Do you think Nala would approve? Do you think she could get Simba to approve...?" she started to sweat, "Of... of making graves somewhere... nice to visit, like you... humans do." she gulped heavily.
"Maybe not all at once, maybe after their anger cools down... Maybe I'm asking too much, I... I just thought." she pawed at the ground, clawing the dirt. They wouldn't take me seriously anyway..." she sighed, "Absolutely don't tell Simba. Got it?!" she said, sternly.
