One would think that they would want to keep Zion a secret, and well, most of the expedition did. Carl however, knew he could never find and use it alone... that and he knew it held a cost, if one that none of his research had shown. After they had made their shelter and had themselves established, he kept looking to the savannah.
No, he was going to find some greedy animals to work with. "The power that makes them what they are, and the power to remake themselves perhaps." he grinned. He was a tall man, black hair, and a tattered black suit.
He stood out, and that was exactly what he wanted. He walked the savannah boldly, the animals that did talk... well, they didn't say anything useful. He wanted someone needy, greedy, or just easy to manipulate. He wanted to spread the word and get the search going. As long as someone found it he would be happy. "I need to find out who the belligerents are..." he said, he made a point to talk to himself, he wanted to attract attention after all.

Chidi was most interested in the new species for all the wrong reasons.
What in the world was Simba playing at? He’d of course snuck in for the presentation of the new “prince” and it had left him gawking. What did these creatures want? There were murmurs of Zion, gossip about it all... and he didn’t like it. The high and mighty king may have been comfortable with them but he certainly wasn’t.
That said, he wanted more information. Wanted to better understand what he could do, how he could take out the threat if need be. And now... That was why he followed Carl quietly. Waiting to speak when he was sure that the creature was indeed alone.
“Belligerents?” He spoke with a throaty chuckle. “Funny, I was just starting to think you were the same thing... Then again, I suppose trespasser is more fitting.” He snorted.
He leapt onto a nearby rock and stared the man down curiously. “Or perhaps not anymore. What with the human sitting among the most “beloved” royal family,” he purred in a more sinister manner. “Though I don’t suppose you know about that. It’s still a cub. You seem to be at your maturity. And I doubt you lost it willingly if it was with your kind.”

Carl took in the lion, he hadn't noticed him... so he certainly would put to mind that at least he, but perhaps lions... in general could be stealthy even for their size. It wasn't just blindness of prey.
"Hm?" he asked, as he seemed to analyze Chidi. Despite his fierce appearance, the human simply knew fear would not serve him at all, besides if he had followed along this long, he didn't intend to hurt or kill him.
He shrugged, "There was an accident, some of us were separated." he explained, "But it seems... the boy, made an impression. I intend to make one as well." he smirked, "Don't worry, my motives are purely selfless." the man chuckled.

Heh, an impression. That was one way of putting it.
He didn’t think he’d seen the Pridelands this beside themselves in a long time. Especially when one considered there had never been an outsider in the royal family before. Flicking his tail ever so slightly, he gave the smallest of smirks. “I’ll say, it’s the first time I’ve at least heard an outsider was welcomed into the royal Pride,” he said as he examined his nails carefully. “If you ask me, it’s a mistake. With no offense meant you humans dropped from the sky one day and next thing I know one of your Cubs sits with the king. Tsk tsk. Too trusting I say.”
As he leapt down from the rock, he began to circle the human. Taking him in. They certainly were not much to look at, were they? His hazel eyes met his. “But I must admit... The adoption of the one called “Sam” did intrigue me,” he stated. “Especially since it claims you humans are here for a reason. And I am... Something of an explorer.” One way to say smuggler. “Therefore I am intrigued to find out more of this... Zion. But not from the mouth of a cub.”

Carl let out a hrm, "Yes, the story is quite legendary. Sadly I don't know if I can find anyone who will believe it... It's a shame, really. It's all there for the taking and everyone is fighting." he explained, cryptically. "Ah, so it was Sam? I am not surprised, I have heard much of Simba's kindness and compassion." he said, he could sense the hostility, so he ensured his tone was more of fact than of praise.
"The claims are true, I am the head archaeologist... studier of the past, I mean. I intend that we find Zion, and the power that lay within it."

Kindness? Compassion?
He couldn’t help but laugh, loudly. Sure he might have kept those outward appearances and kindness when he was in public or among his family. But he hardly called turning tail and running while everyone suffered kindness and compassion. Hadn’t even taken them out of exile...
He growled lowly to himself before commenting. “I have no doubt that Simba showed compassion to your friend. He’s known for being a “good” father,” he noted. “But make no mistake, he is a selfish creature,” he explained. “He’d likely throw all of us out if he had the chance. Make no mistake, outsider.”
Flicking his tail once more he spoke up. “I do warn you of this, human. Magic here always comes with a price,” he noted rather cryptically himself. “If this.. Place has power you cannot simply waltz in and take it. And if you think you can, you are mad.”

Carl hrmed, "You seem to know him well." he said simply, offering a line for him to explain why he knows this, without prying directly. "Selfish, hm? He certainly won't be any use getting to Zion." selfish, or kind, he would be a poor choice. He needed a certain kind of ally to get his goal.
"Of course, I have no doubt that once we are there, things will be far more difficult. However, it would not exist if the price could not be paid." he smirked. "I won't take you for a fool. I intend that whoever is worthy, whoever deserves it... whoever can pay the price, gains that power. I would be thrilled if that was me, but I will be happy to have that power awakened. Whomever gets their hands, paws, or wings on it. The worst thing for anything of value is to be buried, or sealed."

Know him well?
Maybe once upon a time they had been friends - family friends more like it. But they’d never been close. All the same he seemed to feel as though he knew him well enough to judge that he was not the almighty king he was praised as. “Perhaps, but moreso when we were Cubs. Not that it matters much,” he explained bluntly. “I simply go upon his actions while his uncle came into power, of which were not right.”
A payable price? Perhaps, but Chidi also had come to think it wasn’t going to be that easy. This human didn’t seem to have worldly experience with magic, at least the kind of such a magnitude. “Perhaps. But one must not underestimate something the ancient kings would hide,” he explained very honestly. “They did not hide much from our world: and if they hid this. I can imagine that they feared it as well.”

Carl scoffed, "Why should the ancient kings get to decide who has this power? The kings that seem to be quite pleased with Simba's rule? Us humans once had access to it... and besides how do you know what they are hiding. It is by definition hidden. Any legend you may have heard, may be true." he said, trying to entice him, but he was sure his words were true as well.
"They feared it, perhaps because it would take them out of power, to let someone more worthy take over. Or provide knowledge and magic to more than just their chosen kings..."

Chidi considered the men’s words a moment.
While Chidi had something to say about Simba’s side of things. Like most animals in the Pridelands he held the more ancient kings, including Mufasa, in much higher regard. “They may have faltered in their judgement of Simba. But make no mistake, the Ancient Kings are very wise,” he said very openly. “And while you may not be able to look past the surface of not having been a part of this. You should at least attempt to see where it may have been for the better. Word of your “guns” have already caused quite a stir.”
Power? Magic? While the latter may have been true, he definitely doubted the former. The wisest of the kings wouldn’t simply be motivated by greed would they? “You’re suggesting they acted out of greed. Which is quite the accusation,” he commented. “Greediness is an abhorrent trait in these parts. For all manner of creature.”

Carl looked the lion right in the eyes, his fear of the creature had definitely subsided... these creatures were more civilized than he had even expected. Interesting, very interesting. Still, they were also just as naive.
"Is this place really a paradise? That is what you are making it out to be." he said, trying to use doubt to sway him. "We encountered humans that had remained close to nature, and they reacted much the same to the more advanced of us." he shared.
"Where I come from the strong survive, and rule. Some, like these kings of yours, promise that they are looking out for everyone. But it's all lies. Strength and manipulation are what put people in charge, and the power within Zion gives anyone the strength to take it."
He focused on Chidi's expression after his little... speech.

Paradise? Hardly, but where was there paradise? Only with the king of kings, the greatest of them. As far as the lion was concerned this place was simply the closest to that that the world had. “I’d hardly call it paradise. But I have heard the stories that came from the prince’s mouth from second hand,” he explained. “To my knowledge we have only ever had one monster among us. Where you created Hitler, and so many others... Yet you all wonder why you are not connected to Zion.”
He took a few steps closer, giving a slight snarl. “We take care of our young, we help the wounded and sick where we can. And moreover, we don’t enact mass genocide of which the boy speaks,” he then added. “So no, human. We are not paradise. But you are hardly equal to our ways. Otherwise you may still have a seat at the table as he puts it.”
After a moment, he did pause. “That being said I may be interested in finding this Zion for my... Own reasons.”

Carl nodded, "Stories from a child, natural of you to say that we had monsters." he scoffed, "Monsters are a thing of imagination." he said, "Those that are so-called monsters were men. They aren't demons that hide among us, they are people that seized opportunity and used it for evil." he said confidently.
"Our people take care of our young, wounded, and sick. Maybe not as well, but there are many reasons. Our lives are not as simple." he said, it would be a very long explanation of the history of the modern world...
"There is no way to know how you, or anyone else, would use the power of Zion. However my hope is that someone who will use it productively is given the opportunity. I could offer it to that zebra over there, or that bird. They would probably use it for good, but they could as easily decide they want to rule Africa with an iron fist... or hoof, or wing."

Chidi snorted.
Of course he had figured they were not actual monsters, he wasn’t an idiot. But at the same time he doubted there was much different. “You say that but monsters take all forms. It may not be an actual winged beast but no less you all created these monstrosities,” he then spat a little. “”take care of” indeed. I think you humans and us animals have two very different definitions human. Given all I’ve heard but I can’t fault the species that seems more primitive.”
Hmmm his comments about giving it to the right person was true, but he’d hope even the humans weren’t this stupid. Though if someone put Hitler in charge that sort of answered it for him.... “Your balls make me laugh human. You truly seemed to have “figured it all out”.”

Carl shrugged, "Some of our culture is less than kind, but Sam would do a much better job of that, not as hardened by the years as I." he said, "It's a matter of perspective after all. I've heard of the Outlands, and how oppressed they feel. Pushing the problem somewhere else doesn't excuse it."
He thought a moment, "Speaking of perspective. I have figured it all out, I've studied our history, and I see things from the top. Not the bottom as a commoner. I know how human society works because I was raised by people who were at the top." he smirked, "It can be terrible at times but progress has a price."
