Kabili laughed as well.
He listened as she mentioned a story. Wow, thinking they’d end up together? That was interesting. He wondered if that happened a lot or not? It was kind of interesting to think given he didn’t have many options or any out here yet. After all, humans could not mate with animals.
“Still that’s pretty cool that you guys did end up together. You two make a great pair,” he admitted. It was true, he hadn’t seen a pair that ruled or parented better, though he didn’t have many examples either. “But yeah usually trying to make stuff happen like that doesn’t work out. Least that I can think of. Sometimes in my world they try to arrange marriage though.”
He then added. “I’m gonna have to figure out what I’ll do when I’m older. Since you guys should know. Humans can only mate with other humans,” he explained honestly. He knew animals could mix so this was probably something foreign to them. “I may have to go back for a little at some point to find a wife but I’d be back.”
He frowned at the mention of Scar killing Simba. The thought he had pulled that disgusted him. “Yeah well what matters is he didn’t. And dad’s here, right?” He tried turning his frown into a smile.
Kabili stood straight and respectful as Zazu appeared to them though. He was still getting used to the bird at this point. Having not officially been inducted yet and all - but even for a bird he was a little intimidating at least in his opinion. “Yeah! He seemed pretty nice we just weren’t sure he was telling the whole truth,” he explained when Nala had finished. “I figured since you’re always giving that morning report to dad in the morning you might know something. You seem to now everything.”

Zazu tilted his head at the names, "It is my job to know everything that is going on in the Pridelands, to inform his majesty the king." he reminded, though it was not yet time to reveal the duties that he was to be training Kabili for.
"Hrm." he grumbled, "Well I will say Bandit is not a very promising name... Jackals are thieves and liars after all. It makes well, finding out about them most difficult." he said. "You can trust them less than hyenas, but... they aren't as savage." he said, making clear before he said anything useful that caution was a priority.
"Swindler well, you see the pattern with their names." he rolled his eyes, "I recall her, fitting her name she liked to make deals... and break them. Against my advice Mufasa accepted one in particular. That they would leave after er... her child was born." he said. "That child could be Bandit, if he's not lying about them" he pointed out.
"If Bandit is anything like Caesar, I'm sure he was very nice." he said sarcastically, "Always smiling, always confident. He carried himself as if he was a king... I dare say he was copying Mufasa." as he spoke he also thought, "You did say Bandit called himself a prince... Ceasar really thinks he can make himself a king?" he scoffed. "It adds up, except that Ceasar is a little old for that... I would have figured age had got him. Bandit has to be well older than Simba... Sarabi was not yet even queen when this happened."

Nala just gave him a smile of gratitude as Kabili said he thought she and Simba made a good pair. "Yes, but not for Zazu's interference, more despite it", she admitted.
They had arranged marriages where Kabili came from too. Interesting, and yet not surprising that all cultures of animals would have some form of trying to plan for their children's future. She was still not sure what had singled her out to Zazu and the tradition's attention. Her mother hadn't been an special lioness. Being Simba's best friend? Well what if a future monarch had more than one?
It sort of surprised Nala that Kabili was even thinking about all of this now, but then it shouldn't, she reminded herself, he was reaching that between grown stage. Would he be able to go back even? Well they would know better when the time came.
"Well I wouldn't have you growing up quite so fast as to worry about it just yet", she gave him a playful nudge, but then looked thoughtful. She had heard there were humans to be found in the lands about, just lands they for good reason avoided. Or like he said, if he found a way to go back.
"And whatever you decided I'm sure will be right and work out, just...know that if Zazu gets odd ideas and tell you about His Plan, you have my permission to ignore him", she smiled. Again, Kiara was probably the one she would have to curb Zazu on.
"Yes", she agreed to the important thing being that Simba was here, and there was a lot in that one word.
Speaking of Zazu, Nala listened to the one good part of his attention to so much detail. Knowing facts like these. "I...wasn't sure if Jackals were just working against themselves on names and all", she admitted she hadn't prejudged off Bandit's name.
This was before Sarabi was queen! But Zazu was still Majordomo. Nala didn't comment on how old that made him, cub her would have, but she had learned more tact as queen and even before. "Well she obviously didn't fully break that deal if this is the first we're seeing of Bandit...", she said thoughtfully and as Zazu went on, next explaining the situation more fully.
"They said their homeland was invaded and were looking for the Pride Land's help. We...of course are hardly in a position to aid another region, watching Zira as we are".
And again, what an alliance with jackals could just hand their enemies, "But we also wanted to check up on the particulars of their tale".

Kabili giggled.
True, sometimes he felt like he was trying to grow up fast. But he’d of course grown up in a world where he had to. The Pridelands were very different in that respect - they let their kids be kids most of the time, rather than made them grow up quickly and threw them into harsh labor.
“Right, I forget kids here focus on being kids. Outside of helping the Pride,” he admitted honestly. It would be a learning curve for a bit with that anyway. “Don’t worry, humans mate older anyway. You won’t have to worry about me growing up like that for a *long* time.”
At least he assumed.
When they’d reached Zazu and he’d pointed out it was his duty to inform Simba like that he only nodded politely. And instead of getting wholly into the conversation or speaking over him on matters he didn’t know. He listened carefully to what Zazu had to say.
It was... Interesting how animal politics seemed to work. But wait... Zazu was around before Sarabi was Queen? How old was this guy? “Man you’re ancient then,” he mentioned. “If it was that long ago I mean, no offense intended.” He threw his hands up and chuckled nervously.
“But I mean it sounded to me like he’s being honest. A lot of what you said lines up with what he did, right?” He asked curiously. Eyeing Nala in hopes they could have gone on past his outburst. The last thing he wanted was to insult the Majordomo. “And shouldn’t we be worried if we don’t ally with him he could ally with someone else?”

The queen had shown the difference experience conferred, by holding her tongue yet being quickly undone by her son. "...Mufasa was, nor am I... that old." he lowered his beak solemnly, "Ceasar is older in fact, but yes, among those around I am perhaps the oldest, aside from some of the elephants. The Circle of Life does claim the old, and my status... that is, my natural status, but my royal advisor status... protects some, like myself." He knew he was largely spared by Mufasa taking him as advisor.
"Sarabi was around, of course, just not yet having her title!" he smiled, "You may ask her about that, it is her business." he stated firmly. He seemed pleased enough that Nala didn't think it good to ally with him, but... Kabili had been taken in. He sighed.
"Young master." he said, flapping his wings a few times, before folding them in. "All we truly know about him, since he is a jackal, is at best what we know about his dad." he put his left wing to his beak in a face-wing, "You must see the diplomatic repercussions." Their secret remained, but as prince Kabili still had diplomatic duties.
"To be friends, allies even, would be to wrap the name of the great kings, of Mufasa, in with these lying, conniving thieves. Ceasar wants us only to use us, to play us for fools." he stared down Kabili, "Ceasar's age will get him before they become a problem." he said, coldly.

Nala smiled relieved as Kabili said that humans typically stayed young for a bit beyond adolescence at least, and didn't rush into things like finding a mate and families. "Well that's good, though I know I also probably just sound like any other mother, I've...become alright with sounding like that", she smiled. At first, with Kiara and Kion, she had tried to pretend she didn't have thoughts such as worrying over their safety same as her own mother had (and Simba worried enough for both of them) but now it was just one and the same with the maturity being queen had brought also.
It was not unheard of to wait for full adulthood for lions and other animals as well, but it also wouldn't be unusual if Kiara or Kion found mates in adolescence either, though Simba would no doubt have plenty to say especially concerning Kiara.
Kabili spoke the thought on Zazu's age which they had both thought. Nala gave a small smile as well as let out her soft chuckle at both that and Zazu claiming Mufasa spared him, though that didn't mean she didn't believe him, and she was quick to add in a diplomatic sooth, "And the Pridelands run all the more smoothly for it".
To that end, his knowledge on the jackals...
Nala listened and thought. Zazu's last words were a bit cold, but also truthful. The queen let out a sigh, "I'm all for judging people by their actions, not their past", she was explaining to Kabili, not arguing with Zazu, "If sanctuary alone were the issue and what he asked, it would be...simpler, but Zazu's right, an alliance...would be trickier, though you have a point and I thought it myself on if he goes to Zira but...".
She sighed, "I know for a fact she won't align with hyenas for...personal reasons", and it was a good thing for them, she had seen that, "It seems risky to trust to her own prideful emotions also but...I feel like it would be the one thing to work for us and she would not like to admit jackals helped her".
A slim hope, but there.

Did Kabili listen to Zazu? Sure.
But he was starting to think that the others were right about how Zazu was a little too rigid. It was ok though. He’d learned how to tune out other more “tough” or “rigid” people. So he simply smiled and nodded along until he got to the part about Sarabi, and moreover, jackals,
Honestly, on one hand he kinda saw what he was saying. But at the same time, he did feel that it was maybe too hasty? Then again, how would he know? At best he’d only had some experience with animal politics right now. “I mean I guess that makes sense, I just didn’t know jackals could be that cunning,” he admitted. “Are they all like that...? I mean the whole troublemaking and all. Like hyenas and all.”
She wouldn’t want to ally with hyenas or jackals? Why? Kabili raised an eyebrow. “I feel like there’s a story why I’m missing here.”

Zazu rose a brow at Nala's response, "...Yes, imagine who could replace me. Rafiki?" he stuck his tongue out and shook his head. His expression, as well as his opinions and thoughts on jackals, were as cold and stern as could be.
"Zira's hate is tempered by her pride, Scar was betrayed by the hyenas so she never will ally with them." he said with determination. "Jackals are nothing but cunning tricksters and liars. They prey on the naive and the soft-hearted, or they force us to give them a chance through claiming to be different."
The hornbill looked down at Kabili's question however, it was one thing to paint with a broad brush, but his was a direct question. "It is their culture." he looked up, then to Nala, and back down again. "Yes, that means they can go against it. Jackals are not born evil, they are not helpless but to lie." Zazu was not a liar, that was for sure. "Else we could not fault them for it." he admitted. "Bandit represents his pack, he is not an outcast."
He looked up to the sky. "Ceasar thinks a jackal can associate with the Great Kings. His... time is coming. I'm sure of it." he returned his gaze to Kabili. "It would hurt our hearts more to be betrayed by him... to be so foolish again after Scar, than anything Zira or the hyenas could do. To put that burden on Kion, on Simba." he sighed. "If it wasn't for Scar, maybe Mufasa would give him a chance, on a very short leash. Simba is... frankly, not Mufasa."

Were all jackals bad?
For all the ways that she tried to be fair, Nala could not say that she didn't hold some prejudices of her own. Mainly against hyenas and due to what they'd done to the Pride Lands during Scar's reign, some unpleasant encounters mixed up in that. It was something she recognized about herself and worked at being better about, though. She wanted to believe that if Bandit had been a Hyena she would still be here talking to Zazu about how to be fair...but in all honesty she wasn't sure.
Thankfully Kabili was asking on Jackals though. She let Zazu answer on both questions before adding in her own. "I'm afraid what Zazu says on Culture is true, and...cunning is a prevalent thought to be passed down, but not all Jackals, no".
Zazu had an interesting insight into why Ceasar might have had his son try this. "But...that wouldn't work either-way, or not the way he imagines", she voiced; but of course desperate chances were just that. It was true that much of what Scar had done still hung about the Pride Lands and over instances like this.
With a sigh, Nala nodded and turned back to Kabili. "While your father is a wonderful king...he...we all, really, have been wounded by what Scar did and it can influence judgement at times". She hoped that she didn't sound unfair to Simba, but she of anyone also knew how deeply Scar's betrayal affected him. It hadn't affected any major decisions though. "And we do have to think of you and your siblings, yes", she agreed.

Kabili made an "oh" motion with his mouth.
Of course Scar had allied himself with the hyenas! It sounded about right from what he'd heard of them both. But it kind of sounded ironic that his great-uncle had been betrayed by them. He really must have been the most hated animal in this whole place. Wasn't he? Though he listened even more closely to his comment about what jackals were like. Tricksters? Taking advantage of the naiive? "Oh I mean, I guess I just didn't know... But that does make sense, at least," He explained honestly. "But I can see why you'd have to consider that now anyway."
Or at least, he saw their point of view.
Of course, he especially understood Simba's feelings on the matter as well. To be betrayed the way he was definitely said something about that, after all. "I mean, the way that Scar betrayed him I think dad has the right to have it influence him. From what I know of the story anyway," He admitted. "And you're right about us... The last thing we need is to put faith in the wrong people again, right? We don't need to repeat the past."
That... Was something he could relate to more than anything.

The hornbill was more than pleased, not only was Nala listening to him, if still being far too childish-minded in his opinion, but Kabili also was understanding. This would be far more difficult with either of said siblings... the thought of which would bring dread.
Zazu sighed softly, a simple tactic of debate, he started harsh, but now was when he would soften, now that they seemed to share his perspective he would give a little. "Yes, your majesty. His plan is futile, we have nothing to worry about." he said comfortingly, turning to sadness as Kabili took in the talk of Scar. "I will spare you the details. Everyone suffered under Scar, and... as long as Simba is still recovering and repairing from the damage, we all still do... some more than others." Zazu said. "I trust Simba to be guarded about these jackals as it is."
He stared at Nala, "Siblings... We must inform them. I... won't speak ill of them but, they are vulnerable, we must ensure they don't fall for his lies!" despite holding his tongue, it was obvious he felt Kiara's rebellious nature and Kion's strong moral code were ripe for exploiting.

Nala could read the question in Kabili's expression over Scar being turn around betrayed by the hyenas, as the story had come from Simba telling of the final battle. As her son, and one of the princes, now it was Kabili's right to know the full history in so much as she would share with any of her children at their current ages. "Yes, Scar's pride, and feeling unchallenged, even after your father returned, lead to him...saying more than was good for him and insulting them".
Not repeating the past but...also not letting it affect them now and lead to too much suspicion, it was a difficult line, but the way they were drawing it with the jackals seemed right. For the most part.
Nala had long ago learned few decisions, especially in the context of ruling, could be fully right. "It is hard, being in charge of so much and weighing everything by the good of all, but...well even if I am also being an overprotective mother, I can't risk it for you or your siblings", she agreed.
She'd thought mostly on physical danger, but Zazu had a point about being lead astray as well. Nala nodded. "As soon as may be, perhaps, I know Kiara is most likely back at the cave". Especially if she was with Tiifu and Zuri.
Kion on the other paw could be harder to locate. "Thank-you Zazu, I should probably go see if I can locate at least Kiara and, if you see Kion will you speak to him as well if myself or Simba or even Kabili have not?".
Though he would take it from family more so no doubt.

Yikes.
He was pretty sure that a death by hyena would be probably the most unpleasant death imaginable. But then again, with everything that they said - and all the suffering. His mind went to his own people, and furthermore, how they'd of course suffered at the hands of Hitler. "I mean, that makes sense. We humans can probably understand more than you think," But then again, he wasn't ready to talk too much about that. "I get it, anyway. Even though you can't blame every species for what happened. You can't just forget it either."
Kabili definitely understood where Nala was coming from, too. If she had lost so much in that time, how many family members had she lost? "It's OK, mom. I get it," he explained honestly. "I wouldn't want to risk anything if it was one of you guys in danger."
He'd lost enough already - considering all that had transpired in the last few months. Had to learn a whole new family, life, and home... He wasn't sure how he'd be able to take it if... Oh, right, they still needed to warn the others, good point. "I'll tell Kion if I see him," He replied honestly. "I see him more than Kiara at least."

The hornbill was satisfied that the royals had taken his words to heart. "Overprotective? You know I think you are not protective enough..." he said confidently, "Not to... er..." he looked down, "All due respect, you are still learning to be queen yourself." his wings folded in, he was tense about speaking so brazenly, but knew it had to be said.
He moved on quickly as the two of them elected to talking to their daughter, and brother respectively. "Right." he hrmed a moment, "What are your orders for me, your highness? With you two busy with the kids, and all." he perched at attention, awaiting said orders, if any.

Nala nodded as Kabili alluded that humans could understand the tough line of acknowledging hurt done but not blaming an entire species for it. He didn't say more, and that was fine, something things were hard to speak of.
She sent a small amused smirk over to Zazu as he spoke carefully, her being queen now, but still...well as he always had and probably always would, no doubt still seeing her and Simba as those cubs he'd had to mind no matter how royal they were now. She chuckled, "Well I do believe in giving cubs some freedom".
More than he and Simba would at any rate.
Nala thought over the situation as Zazu asked for orders. Simba was talking to Rafiki, and as said, she and Kabili would go tell Kiara and Kion.
What Zazu did best did seem best at the moment.
"While I'm sure Bandit didn't return after we left...a quick check of the borders now and in the coming days probably wouldn't go amiss. Maybe add that to your Morning Report for a bit; just so we're sure and keep informed of the situation.", she said.
