Nala's duty turned to keeping watch and trying to keep a circle around Sam so that he wasn't trampled, steering the panicking zebras away where she could. Their target moved from the circle and Sam was obliged to dodge through it. Nala followed his progress and was making her way over when she noticed he had managed to do it!
Thurston and the rest of the herd finally picked a direction to panic off in. Nala approached and investigated his work. "Very nice, I guess Rafiki was right and human tools are good claw stand ins". She glanced Sam over for injury as well as just how he was doing. "How are you feeling?". Somtimes mental state of mind after a kill was important as well, from either the struggle or a million other things.

Sam nodded his head.
It was still a whirlwind of adrenaline that seemed to be corsing through him. And as he looked down upon the dead zebra, he couldn’t help but feel a little sad. She had probably lived a long and good life, and he at least felt a great deal of sympathy. Though he also knew that he ate animals in the human world too - taking a life though...
Nala pulled him out of his thoughts just as he was closing the zebra’s eyes. “It’s... A lot harder than I thought it would be,” he honestly replied. He was sure Nala knew what he meant. “I know it’s the circle of life. But it’s sad... I guess I just don’t understand why we have to die at all though.”
His voice was a little lower after that. “Does it... Does it get easier?” He asked. Though as a male of the Pride he knew he wouldn’t be hunting often... There was no way that in terrain like this it would be the last time he had to kill.

Nala did understand and gave a sympathetic smile. "Your empathy is a strength of yours, not a weakness", she nuzzled him. "Not all ways of the Circle of Life are easy", and she understood why Sam would be particularly sensitive to death.
"Yes and no" she answered honestly to it getting easier. "You never forget the seriousness of the duty you hold, in a sense, but that's not a bad thing, to...be always mindful of the life you have to take".
Without the rest of the pride to help she nudged under the zebra to help carry it, her, back to Pride Rock on her back. "Come on, let's head back". She wasn't done with what she could share with Sam though. "It's also easier when the Circle of Life is working and you can thin the herd as we just did. Those whose...time has come in a sense".
She sighed, "Back under Scar...when the herds began leaving because they were over-hunted by Scar, including species that helped with grass management and thus there wasn't enough for the larger herds...the pride was near starving and...one gazelle was separated and still in the Pride Lands. Some of the hyenas had their eye on her too and I told myself I ended her life far more mercifully than they did but still...it wasn't her time, or shouldn't have been and I recall that and her to this day". Nala cleared her throat, "But, as I said, it's easier when things are working as they should, yes".

As Sam leaned into Nala’s nuzzle he listened closely.
Honestly it was a bigger lesson than he had been expecting. And maybe for the first time, he was beginning to truly understand the circle of life. “It’s kind of like keeping the balance,” he managed softly. “No ones death is wasted and no one dies in vain.”
He helped Nala lift the beast, carrying it slowly. He looked back at her. “I think I’m starting to get this circle of life thing.”
Sam frowned with understanding at the idea of starving. Of just how far the lions once had to go to keep alive. Again, he knew a thing or two about that himself, and doing anything to make sure you kept alive and safe. “You do what you have to do to keep going,” Sam honestly replied. “It wasn’t your fault - you were trying to help.”
After a moment he shared. “Before we left, during the war. My mom wasn’t able to make ends meet a lot either. So... I found somewhere in town that paid me under the table. That’s how *we* got food,” Sam clarified. “She never knew where the extra money came from that kept at least something on our table. But we at least had one meal on the table again... And I didn’t mind.”

She nodded to Sam's clarifying and summing up of the Circle of Life. "Exactly".
"Thankyou", she made sure to thank as Sam helped her with carrying the kill back to Pride Rock. She was prepared to handle it on her own, but his help was also appreciated. It seemed what he did, looking out for his parents, or birth mother, as his story showed.
Nala listened, understanding the idea of the story, but not all the particulars. He had...hunted on his own when too young to do so. "You're a very kind and brave boy, Sam", she smiled, and when she and Simba were later searching for a name, the trait would come back to fit him.
